Just A Tech Demo? - Ninja Theory's PS3 Exlcusive

  • Ninja Theory has an eye for fidelity, from day one they have built games that push the boundaries of whatever console they release on. Heavenly Sword is an early PS3 game that had a modern mo cap, brilliant facial animations, and gorgeous graphics even to this day but does it hold up in 2024? And does it deserve a permanent spot in my collection?

This an example that shows how making games is so hard: certainly a technical marvel for the time that will be hardly remembered because it was lacking actual gameplay. Nice review as always, man!

Exactly - just like the Order 1886, there's something there and I think a Heavenly Sword 2 or Order 1887 they could focus more on the game since they had already built the tech behind it

Early PS3. Some people still had CRTs in 2007 so they don't actually look too bad

Have this game, beat the game, loved the game. And if I recall the actress that did the motion capture for the main female character, is the main character from the tv show The Fringe and played Joel's friend in the tv show The Last of Us.

I just played the Force Unleashed for the first time (hint hint I'll make a video on it soon) and the tech side of it is sooooo good. The physics are extremely impressive.
Have you played any other Ninja Theory games?

I actually really liked the story, but I agree that the shooting segments are very weak, the combat is alright, and that the villains are the highlight.
But as far as character action games go, I find Nariko an impressive character. She has been shunned from birth, for essentially... having been born wrong. Not in the way that an old story has stated that events would pan out. That particular story and prophecy came into existence exactly *because* of the Heavenly Sword. Her life was over before it ever began, due to their entire culture's obsession with this one object. And she is forced to wield the thing she hates the most, to safeguard those very few that made her life bearable.
She does so without relent or mercy, and bitterly helps the rest of her clan out of the prison, despite all the scorn they have subjected her to all her life.
The interesting thing is that a sword, inherently, is designed specifically for conflict. Axes and hammers can be used for tools, spears are tools for the hunt and fishing, and even maces and clubs are sticks in essence and can be used to hammer nails, tresh wheat or as a torch. Clubs more so than maces. Battle variants for these tools came later.
A sword is truly designed for conflict. An interesting irony, for an object that came from the heavens to bring peace.
And where it once brought peace in the past, it is now the very *reason* that new wars and battles have begun.
In the segments in the afterlife, we see Nariko from the point of the view of the Sword itself. She is angry, fearful, and in despair, but in the final afterlife scene, she has a truly awesome moment of realization and threat.
A sword, as stated before, is made specifically for battle. To bite down through steel and skin into flesh and bone, and sing amidst the clattering, thrive amidst the pain. The Heavenly Sword itself most of all.
But once Bohan gets his hands on the Sword... what happens to it? It shall never be used again. Nobody can oppose him. His rule is absolute, there is no *need* for a weapon of such might, and nigh impossible for a new "chosen one" to even reach it.
It will be nothing but a wallhanger, collecting dust.
Nariko *scares* a violent shard of the heavens into bringing her, an unworthy mistake, a "bad omen" as undeserving as any mortal to permanently wield the Sword, back from Death. To fight for the safety of the very few she cherishes.
She will not live long, but the Sword will have its final taste of conflict in a clash of a bombastic grandiosity only seen once before in the land. And if Nariko wins, there is still a chance that some fool will one day, take up the Sword and once more taste the battle.
Bohan, during their fight, taunts Nariko a final time. He states that despite her sacrifice, nobody will remember her.
But Nariko takes it in stride, stating that it will be enough that she *was* here to make a difference for the better. Remembrance or no.
The ending scene struck me well, to see Nariko be given such beautiful respect in death, as her body is put on a raft and given to the waves amidst the blossom and the dusk. There's not many endings where the main protagonist truly dies.
Mayhaps a heavenly Sword 2 would have made a difference in that. I wouldn't mind a second title. There's so much that could be better, for both story and the gameplay.
For all its many combos with different animations, I currently don't see a lot of implicit depth or the right flow. For as much as I enjoyed the story and especially the end, I don't find myself clambering to replay it. Nevertheless, Heavenly Sword fondly sticks with me
And for that, i do find it heartening that you say "i might as well keep it" rather than do a skit where you destroy the game. It's no sin to just be there.
Who knows, perhaps you can one day meet someone who would enjoy it more and gift it to them. Perhaps it will be passed around more, perhaps someone after you destroys it. Or perhaps it will become worth a lot more later on to make it viable to sell.
In any case, thank you for reading this all through, and thank you for the video. I found you through the Sly Cooper vid, enjoyed it, and I may come around more often.
Have a good one and take care.

Sad they went from this to Hellblade. Hellblade is cool because of the mental health concept, but not a great game to actually play.

I just started Hellblade 1 and so far it is quite boring, just doing the same puzzles over and over again.
I'm hoping with Big Daddy Xbox money they'll be able to properly flesh the game out to be an actual game with the same narrative structure. Thanks for watching :)
