  • After getting a good deal on a pile of filament and finding the STL files for a fully 3d printed R2-D2; I decided it was time to make one of my own! Now the real question is; can we print a fully functional R2-D2 and make it for less than $500? Here we are another two weeks or so later and we've made great progress on the 3d printing of the dome and the body. We'll also cover a bit of the initial thoughts on control systems as well.

    Im interested in making this as well. Will pla degrade very much over time in this application?

    • @9142PropsandArmory
      @9142PropsandArmory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That really remains to be seen. I wouldn't recommend regular PLA for things like the drives and legs. Mainly because of strength. At a minimum I'd recommend pla+ for the majority and petg for the drives and legs. Hope that helps!

      I printed all parts on a machine with at 300x300 bed, you will be good. The real fun starts when you have one that is 500mm in both x and y and you can print the whole dome in one part. Prints that long aren't for the squeamish though. Being newer to things, the printing of smaller sections will be good for you. You're in for a long and fun ride! Good luck!

    Question. How much would just printing the R2 without all the drive assemblies cost? I want to build an R2, but short of driving it around to terrorize the cats, I'd really just want a prop one with the lights, head turns, and such. Maybe rig an Alexa into it

    • @9142PropsandArmory
      @9142PropsandArmory  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey James! If printing it yourself it wouldn't be too hard to keep your material cost to about $150. Do you have your own printer? If not, having someone print one for you would be very expensive. You could print one on a printer that costs only a couple of hundred bucks. The rest of the electronics for head motion, lights and such vary greatly depending on your skill set with electronics. For really awesome info, check out both the 3d printed Droids group linked in the description or the astromech.net forums are awesome as well.

  • @JosephGillen

    What are you printing with...PLA, PETG, or? And how are you getting it at $9 a roll?

    • @9142PropsandArmory
      @9142PropsandArmory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PLA for a majority of everything. Drive components and structural parts(legs, shoulders, etc will be PETG) There was a deal on the Vipon app for Tianese PLA for $9 roll from Amazon. I got 10 of them. My PETG is the Amazon basics stuff. Bought the 5 pack for $52 a while ago, so I'm just over $10 a roll on that.

      @@9142PropsandArmory I have 3D printed a BB8 and 2 astromech domes R0 types. I used to only use PLA but I gave up because it warps randomly and your work, all that hard work goes eventually in the trash. I'm now figured out ABS printing and I wish I had made all of my crap in ABS. If you 3D print a droid, its nice for a static prop. It will not last very long if you drive it around.
      I have 2 metal droids and when I drive them around for Halloween the amount of shaking that the droids take going across the street causes parts to come off. My friends with 3D and styrene droids have nonstop issues with repairing the feet after any event.
      So if you finish that droid in 3D and then say took it to Cars and Coffee to shop the Lamborghini owners. The droid will run maybe 100 yards on assfault and then you'll start seeing parts fall off, and it shaking apart.. Just my 2 cents, great work here on this channel.
      Never take a droid to any place with alcohol. Drunks will kick or pour beer on your droid and wreck your shit, all blacked out.

      Anxious to see the next video. Very hard to believe you'll be able to do it for under $500.00. Maybe just the filament, even that will be tough since covid cause all the prices to go up.
