    I’ve always wanted to build an R2, but unfortunately due to my health conditions my hands don’t work anymore. Wish I would have done this earlier, but enjoy watching people’s R2 units. Would be fun taking him to places such as malls and hospitals.

    Droid looks fantastic! My build is all aluminum, and spent close to $20k USD. So 3d printing I'm sure it's a little more labor intensive, but a more economical way to go for sure. We have a couple local builders that did all 3d prints, and they look good too. Good information, well represented!

      hey just out of curiosity what was the majority of the cost in that build? was it actually the aluminum material and machining it?

    Very cool. I was thinking it would be nice if it had some functionality other than entertainment and came up with the idea of making it into a computer UPS when it's at home. Maybe. Just maybe, I'll build one someday. Thanks for sharing!

      @M6 - TPU tires are holding up well. PLA+ wheels/gears/foot/ankle pin no wear at all as far as I can tell.

    Beautiful looking r2d2, really enjoyed following this series, compared to the cost and build of RC Helis your getting a lot for your money with the r2d2. It's great to see the final product but sad this is the end of the series. But with r2d2 it's one of those projects you can keep updating and adding modifications.....     My Heathkit HERO 2000 from 1986 is still up and going to this day. Back then in those days, the assembled version cost $4,500. I chose the kit form instead.

    Great series. Thank you for this. I've been wanting to build one for years, and 3D printing seems to be the way to go. But I'm not very technical so I put it in the too hard basket. However, your videos showing how you did it make it feel a lot more possible. My mail order Falcon cost about the same amount, and it doesn't move so I think this is a great price for something so cool.

    When I saw what you had to pay for it all I was like wow, that's quite a bit. Then I was watching you drive it around and I'm like you know... this man has his own R2D2... that's definitely worth it haha.

      R2 usually cost around $7k to $15k to build so it seems cheap. The full size remote control r2 at Disney Hollywood studios is $25,000. 3d printing seems to be a nice option. For people who want an affordable r2

    Awesome project! You inspired me to start my own 3d printed R2. If you ever feel like revisiting the project in video, it would be great if you walked through your RC setup for the build. For an RC newbie like me, there’s a lot to learn and so many questions. It would be fascinating to see everything from your receiver selection and hook up to your transmitter set up for droid control. Thanks for sharing your build.

    Currently printing the dome on my Bambu printer. Thanks so much for these videos. Very nice job on your R2. I'm curious where you store him. I asked my wife yesterday if a droid would count as decor or furniture and she said no. So that leaves my office or the basement. :-(

    Thank you for sharing! So inspiring! I coached several youth robotics teams and I have always wanted to build an R2D2 droid. After experiencing middle and high schoolers build and drive their robots hard.😅 I was wondering how your wheels and belts are holding up? I noticed too that you used locktite quite a bit. After driving, do you check certain screws any looseness? Thank you too for posting the weight. That has always been a concern for me. I have an SUV for transport but I have been thinking about how to load and unload a Droid solo. Thanks again!

      This R2 has no belts, only gears for the foot drives (mark III feet). All the gears are standing up fine, no issues. I've worn the TPU tires down about 70% already, but I've been driving him on aggressive asphalt a fair amount. Have a new set of tires printed up, just have to install them this winter. No detectable wear on the Omni-wheels or front foot rollerblade wheels/casters. Not a single fastener has come loose; why I used Loctite 242 on them in the first place 🙂

    Congratulations on completing the build. Also thanks for uploading the series, it's been fun following both you and Jason Charlton.
    I'm about 14 months in and can foresee another 6+ months to complete adding all the doors, pies and arm servos.
    Only downside I have at the moment, is the TPU printed foot tires are wheel spinning now. Might need to find a better quality/softer TPU filament. Do you recommend the brand you used?

      The stuff I used is just 3D Printing Canada's generic TPU. It might be rebranded, but I have no idea? I had to dial down the starting current in the Sabertooth to prevent wheel spin using the programming software.

    Hi John and thanks for the series! I have most of the body finished and working on the electronics and drivetrain now. I’ve been reading by other guys making their R2 units that putting caster wheels don’t work too well on carpeted floors. What is your experience? Also, could you tell me which airport this is? I got my pilots license in Canada back in the day and miss the place got to say. Guess you have friends in high places. And by high places I mean the guy in the tower.

      I suppose thick carpet would be an issue, never had any issue on the low pile stuff. Airport: CAH4. Our RC flying club has special permissions for shared usage. Have fun with your build.

    Did the TPU tires survived well the long run on concrete? I builded TPU omnis and affraid its not gonna last long - but used your idea on center wheel rollerblade casters, works well!

      @Drowiz - Yep, they held up fine. The thing has lots of torque with not much weight so is easy to break the wheels free with the stock settings in the Sabertooth. That is what will shave them down fast. I had to dial the start current delivery settings down a fair bit in the Sabertooth, and now only with 100% dual rate/full stick can I break the wheels free on smoother surfaces.

    Looks Great John ! R2 is my next big project, after I finish my B9 from Lost in Space. The parts of your build series that I have watched are good. I want to watch the drive sections, I am interested how you tied the electronics to the RC receiver. I converted an 18 inch static R2 into a movable, interactive model. this was done with an EZB controller and several servos. It worked good. I do have one question for you, does your R2 move from the 2 legged to the 3 legged position and back ? Or are his legs fixed ?

      All fine; then again, my R2 is never exposed to high temps much over +40C so I can't comment on thermal deformation issues due to my specific environment. As for strength of the PLA+, like most who have done strength tests, I've found it stronger than ABS, and most PLA+ I've used is just as impact/flex resistant. No idea how age will affect that of course but so far, so good.

    Could you have made the roller blade wheels on the rear legs caster as well? Then no need for the roller wheels.

      I covered that in detail earlier in this series (specifically part 8 and then fixed in part 9). Can't have a rollerblade caster as there is not enough swivel room in the back feet, and can't have just the roller wheel as there is too much wheel scrub while turning.

      LOL - The sonic blue pearl unicorn piss is up to $22 CND for an 8oz/226g can. Rusty-Oreo 2X is up to $12 a can. Sandy scratch n sniff primer is now $16 a can (all before tax and enviro fees).
      I know I'm getting old, but it doesn't seem all that long ago, normal Rustoleum spray paint was $5 CND a can, and the automotive Dupli-color stuff was around $10 CND a can. Oh well, now I get to cover all that unicorn piss with shit stains next winter to make it look "authentic". 😄

      Hi brad, Not sure yet? I just ordered a Roban 800 EC130 scale bird to hopefully do a video build series on so the RC funds took a big hit. That 200 does look good, and I've been wondering if/when a manufacturer would offer up a smaller direct drive scale bird. No question it's a bright blip on my radar right now as I so enjoy scale and these smaller direct drive helicopters. We'll see...

    Hi John. Great series just a question on paint Station. what size would I need for the biggest part.

      Pretty much up to you and the amount of space you have and size exhaust fan you have. R2's main body is the single largest piece to paint so as long as you can fit it in with a bit of room to spare, that would be the minimum.

      @@Rchelicopterfun Thanks John. I have searched and found 21.5x18.5in which is 55x50 cm approx. I am planning on 61x61cm so looks fine. Also on the Sovol 1.0 you said you could just about put the largest part on that. As I will be new to 3d printing is this something a typical relatively new user of the Sovol would be able to do or is this an advanced us of a 3d printer. Thanks again - going to watch your videos loads as I build here in the uk. I have already recommended them to a few other new builders - I am 9 days into my planning so about 3 months away from starting for real.

      @grasug8550 - He's still working like a champ. 🙂 No mods or additions other than changing some of the sound files. Had a few more of the blue LED's in the front logic lights crap out so that has been the biggest let down of all the components I got for him. I've purchased what I hope to be higher quality blue LED's from Digikey, and have replaced all of them now and so far none have failed. Still haven't weathered him but plan to this winter and will do an update/weathering video hopefully at that time.

      @@Rchelicopterfun I wish I found your video before I started mine last year, I would have avoided some of the pitfalls. Got the body and dome mostly done with plc+ and epoxy, but now working on the electronics and software which has been quite a challenge. Thanks for giving me some good ideas for my build. Your build of Artoo is beautiful and giving me inspiration to continue. Thanks for the reply back and I hope you build another one in the near future. Cheers.

    Amazing work John! I have also built a 3D printed R2. I started in 2019 and as you know he's a constant WIP, lol. To answer your question, I have not had many issues with the plastic creaking noises. Looks like you have the speed regulation down. I have almost flipped mine once or twice. I originally did the V2 belt drive and quickly switched to the V3. I started with 6S, then went to 4S but I think I'm going back to 6S. Mine is primarily Mr. B's V2. I transport mine in a 2DR Jeep Wrangler. I take the dome off and put it on the front seat and load the body in the back without taking the legs off. Fantastic work! thank you for documenting your progress! 7 Months is unbelievable!

      Hey Kevin. Awesome to hear from you! I have to tell you, your video of your 3D printed R2 build ( th-cam.com/video/0DoM3aJg8eQ/w-d-xo.html ) was the first one I ever watched (and watched the most) when I started down this road while considering different build methods and digesting information in the Astromech.net threads. In short, your build gave me the final push to go the 3D route because it looked so good.
      Nice to know you didn't have any creaking or squeaking - perhaps it's due to different types of PLA used?
      Yep, a constant WIP is right. I still haven't weathered mine as I'm finding it hard getting the courage to start 🙂 That will be the next job however I hope to tackle over the winter.
      I'm also considering changing out the Teecees light set to the Astropixles developed by Darren Poulson. They use the RGB LED's with the fading effect to emulate the original fiber optic/color wheel, but at a much better price than the R-Series hybrid fiber optic light set; Darren's also include the PSI's. Ever since I watched Adam Savage's fiber optic light overhaul on his R2 last year, I'm finding the digital look of the flashing Teecees not my cup of tea anymore. Oh well, it never ends does it...       Oh wow John! Thank you for the kind words. I have been thinking about revamping the dome also, I will look into the Astropixles format. I also want to us some Polulu boards for the dome panel animations just to make my droid different. Now that I'm settled in the new house I hope to get back to more video work and updates. I have had some people ask for more content and I am grateful that anyone would stop and comment so I hope to get some more vids out there. Thanks again for putting all you progress together and posting your videos.

      Hi Kevin. Your video was very well done (as of course was your R2), so it's no surprise you get such requests. IMO, yours is one of the best if not the best 3D printed R2D2 videos showcasing the full build journey from start to finish in a single video with great story telling of the process. Very entertaining and as I said, I watched it many times, especially when I was feeling frustrated or lacking motivation with my own build. Yours always gave me inspiration to carry on.
      Have fun with any future R2 update videos now that you have more time and are settled in - I'll be watching :)
