Why Gladys Knight Can't Stand Diana Ross ? By Franco Ross

  • NOTE for viewers :
looking at the hundreds of comments that have been written, I want to clarify that the purpose of this video is NOT to put Gladys Knight against Diana Ross or to understand who is the better of the two of them! The purpose of this video was to understand why Gladys Knight (despite the fact that she says she "doesn't make a big deal out of it"), after decades that this event happened (it was 1966), she continued to talk about it in various interviews. That's all .
In the video, the first "parody" about Diana Ross dates back to 2009, instead, the interview is from 2014. Why does Gladys Knight continue, over the years, to speak bad of Diana Ross for the futile things that happened over 55 years ago? On the contrary, Diana Ross never spoke bad of Gladys Knight and, in the years, when Diana Ross was paying tribute to the "Motown sound" , she always mentioned Gladys Knight and The Pips as part of this great sound .
Diana Ross, for the USA is a national treasure, represents black people in the World.
Black people must be proud of Diana Ross because, around the World, they know Diana Ross not Gladys Knight!

Years ago, my friend Neil booked a gig to sing with Gladys and the Pips in Vegas. It was supposed to be a three month gig. It lasted ten years. Her show was so successful, he ended up buying a home in Henderson County and going back to school.
He told me Gladys and the Pips were so kind, classy, welcoming and supportive. He had performed with many groups over the years but he said that was his best experience so far. Gladys Knight is pure class. Always has been.

Gladys Knight had ( because the years pass for her too), a very strong, powerful and beautiful voice but a common voice, a classic black voice, not immediately recognisable.
Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin (and also Dionne Warwick) have voices that are immediately recognizable because they are not common voices but very particular, personalized voices.
In fact, Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin were the only 2 singers ever who sang and recorded on records every musical genre, from R&B to Soul, from Dance music to Hip Pop, from Jazz to Blues, from Gospel to classical music: Diana Ross, in 1992, with the two tenors Placido Domingo and Josè Carreras, was the first to inaugurate the fusion between classical music and Pop music and then they continued this partnership on a world tour in 1996/1997.

I love Gladys. Sing it Gladys. She really has an amazing voice, and she truly has an amazing heart.
I had the opportunity to work with Diana Ross one day on a photoshoot at the studio of the photographer I worked for at the time. I was apprehensive. They had a few things DIana wanted at the shoot and we made sure the things she wanted were all there. She came in with a huge entourage of young women (maybe one man), and some were there to deal with wardrobe for her changes, others were there for hair and makeup, but most of them just stood around doing nothing but talking to each other while Diana is being photographed. Diana said, If you don't need to be in this room, then please leave and find something to do. Those people scattered like cockroaches when the lights come on. I didn't have to leave, it was my studio. I thought about it, and it wasn't Diana's fault that they scattered like roaches, it was their fault for stupidly standing around doing nothing when they are being paid to work, and who wants to act glamorous and pose for photographs with people just standing around? It is an intimate time being photographed by a celebrity/fashion photographer and it costs quite a bit of money for them to do nothing - it was rude of them, and appropriate for Diana to say something to them.
I was introduced to Diana by my name and job title, and she was introduced to me as Diana. No, she didn't expect me to call her "Miss Ross", but in Hollywood when an actress or singer is respected for their talents and their successful career, then it is merely respectful to refer to them as "Miss Roberts" or "Miss Crawford" or "Miss Summer" or "Miss Grande", at least when welcoming them to a TV show when they come out, or at a public event, or a concert.... "Ladies and Gentlemen, Please Welcome, Miss Diana Ross". She did act annoyed a couple of times about something, perhaps she was testing me to see how I would react to her... would I be nervous or scared of her? I don't know if that's what she did. But, both times I laughed followed with, "Yes, of course, what would you like?" I even teased her a little later on, and she laughed and said, "I'm going to cut your hair" (I had long hair) and I laughed. I* actually enjoyed the day with her and found her funny and even sweet at times. Someone did her nails, and then glued them on over her nails and there were extra ones left over... they are now in my scrapbook along with some feathers from a feather boa she had. As soon as I got home from the day, I called Donna Summer and said, "Guess who we photographed today?" Donna liked Diana and had seen her in concert before Donna was famous, but they had never met until years later, prior to the VH1 tribute to Diana Ross, and they instantly became good friends and exchanged emails, text messages and calls. So, when VH1 asked Diana who she wanted to perform at the tribute, the first person Diana said was, "Donna Summer".
So Donna arrived at the VH1 event on time and was given a dressing room. But, Mariah Carey showed up late... very late... and walked in and said to Donna, "This is MY dressing room." Donna said, "Okay, you can have it", and she collected her things and went to another dressing room. Like Gladys, Donna doesn't allow people to get under her skin like that, particularly when someone is being a nasty diva. Being a diva does not mean you have to be a bitch. Gladys is a religious and deeply spiritual person, you can feel it if you are around her. Donna was also a deeply religious and spiritual person, which means she always tried to be loving, kind, and non-judgmental. Donna never spoke unkindly about anyone, and f someone said something bad about someone in front of her, she would try to say something nice, or change the subject. If that didn't work, she would walk away. Neither one of us said anything unkind about Diana Ross. Donna asked if I called her "Miss Ross" and I said, "No, she was introduced to me as Diana and that's what I called her." And she asked how she looked, and I told her she is tiny and looked great. I love Donna very much, and she has been loving and kind to me for many years. She is resting in peace. Diana, as I understand it, is still active and does concerts.

Gladys Knight was always one of my absolute all time favorite singers when I was growing up.❤️
I must have listened and sang “Midnight Train to Georgia” with my pretend microphone a million times. Years later I had the good fortune of meeting her on an elevator at a hospital in Las Vegas. I was in labor with my daughter and was standing in the elevator with my husband when this little bitty thing came on to the elevator with this huge bouquet of flowers that were bigger than she was. We smiled at each other and then her eyes got big and she said, Oh My! as she could see I was having a contraction. I didn’t recognize her at first but then an orderly also came onto the elevator and said , Oh My Gosh!! It’s Gladys Knight!! I turned and looked at her wide eyed and said, Oh My Gosh, you’re right!! It is Gladys Knight!!😍
She laughed at us both and I immediately apologized as I can only imagine how she felt at that moment.
I had just watched a special with her, Patti Labelle, and Dioana Warwick a week before so I immediately started gushing telling her how much I loved the special I had just watched a week prior where they sang, “That’s what friends are for” with Burt Bacharach. She talked about how much she loved doing it and how much she loved and respected her talented colleagues. She said she was there at the hospital visiting a sick friend and was bringing them the flowers. The whole time we were talking a mile a minute I was having contractions but was doing my best to get through them so I could talk to her.😂When my floor came up and the doors opened I didn’t want to get off. Lucky for her I had another big contraction and she laughed saying, Honey, you better go before you have that baby here in the elevator!!😂
She was without a doubt the kindest, sweetest, warmest, most down to earth person you would ever meet. It would have been nice if I hadn’t been having contractions at the time, but I was still just so thrilled that I was able to meet her. She is such a beautiful classy lady!!😍🥰

Love Gladys. Liked the little excerpt snd interview. It would be nice if Berry and Diana would address somethings they both did wrong. I mean we all do wrong and have regretted it at some point, but looking back - we admit our mistakes and apologize for them. Why? Because it’s the “right thing to do - reason enough. Both must have had a sense of jealousy, insecurity and low self esteem (with all of their success) they were envious of others. They say that Mr. Gordy would go out of his way to push songs at Gladys snd the Pips that he felt were inferior and they would be unable to do anything with - that didn’t work and in fact, when they left, their last song, at Motown, I believe, was: Niether One Of Us and we know that was a hit and then, they left and there was the White Album and they took off on the Midnight Train. The rest is Mo’ History. Berry Gordy didn’t, initially like Marvin Gaye’s What’s Goin’ On? I liked and loved the Supremes and each Supreme had their individual fans. But, breaking up the group was not the issue - it was the way it was broken up, plus changing different groups’ names. Some of that silliness was still going on surrounding Michael Jackson appearing at Motown 25 and what he could sing: Imagine not initially wanting him to sing Billie Jean - the showstopper that night (well, actually, the Moonwalk was the showstopper). Finally, the treatment, or rather, mistreatment of the iconic session musicians (one had to sit in the balcony at Motown 25.). What?! I know they are not the only ones that have acted this way , in the industry, but it did happen, and again , try if someone will address it. Nevertheless, it’s still so sad and you wonder do they regret it? (They should, but do they?) How do they explain it to their children and family. Do they feel the need to? At some given point it would be nice to address it: Florence and how her demise snd death effected her children; because it appears Miss Ross wanted her children to have the best and be successful and I am sure Berry Gordy felt and feels the same about his children and family. In the end, there was room enough for everyone: Gladys and the Pips, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Tammi Terrell, Gladys Horton, the Marvelettes, etc. With all of their greatness - so many at Motown have met with such sad and tragic endings. I don’t believe that in every instance the end justifies the means. Just some thoughts. Peace and blessings,

This is a really great reply. Motowns height was well before I was born but I love learning about it. Dionne, Gladys and Patti have all said the same things about Diana Ross. Oddly enough they were really good friends with Mary Wilson. Diana has never said anything that she did wrong. It is very sad, but they really did a lot of folks wrong and took advantage of them. I loved watching Mary Wilson interviews because she really told the truth.

Jo Ann there's nothing really left to say but Amen 🙏🏽You nailed it 👏🏽There has been a lil admission from Berry G with regards to the treatment of Flo when he was on Oprah's Masterclass.. she straight out asks him! I believe he says something like He could've done things differently...Yeah BG a lot of things could've been done different!! A lot of other talent fell through the cracks as well as The Marvelletes and Martha and the Vandellas...Kim Weston, The Spinners, The Isley Bros etc...yep you blinked and they left in The Midnight Train with Gladys and the Pips 😄But seriously he became obsessed with Diana and making her a star that I'm surprised they're was a company to sell?! Yes they both fulfilled their dreams but it costs a lot of talent to go down the drain, because they didn't know their worth then. The were mostly underage teens or very young adults who knew nothing about the music business side! ..damn shame 😔the story won't come out until BG and DR have passed away because they'll never agree to "real story " being told..thus we had this Dreamgirl version loosely based off of The Supremes.

It's ridiculous and if she was an elder be a role model to the younger female celebrities.

I was a fan of both these incredible artist from a young age. I have even been with Diana in her dressing room and had conversation with her. Each of these artists have different musical material, vocal attributes and personas. They were both at the start of their careers (and both became superstar status) in a time when 'black' artists themselves were not taken seriously or 'accepted' by other communities.
And with Berry Gordy at the helm of a company that had a 'multitude' of artist which would all become worldwide superstar status in there own right, and it was 'he who chose' who he would place more attention and focus on more than others from his stable of artists etc.
Yes this can create a 'Diva' behaviour in the camp has it would do in any industry, ie the film industry etc. There have been many comments regarding Diana in these early day. Even our glorious superstar Patti LaBelle, recalls 'backstage beef' with Diana back in the day...but today Patti laughs jokes about it in her interviews, and both women today are close and respect each other has the super talented artist they both obviously are.
So, both Diana and Gladys know there 'own' worth by the work they have both historically produce and their fans who have followed them through their amazing careers.

I agree with you . Berry Gordy made of Diana Ross the "Black Barbra Streisand".
In 1968, when Diana Ross and the Supremes performed on the Ed Sullivan show "Funny Girl", Barbra Streisand said, "Who thinks to be Diana Ross, the World doesn't need another Barbra Streisand"!!
That's why, Diana Ross for the Afro-Americans, is a national treasure, represents black people in the World. Black people must be proud of Diana Ross because, from the time of the Supremes, she took and continues to take, the image of black singers around the World , all over 5 continents
