She was young and played Barry Gordy like a piano. She had him eating out of her hands. It was always whatever Diana wanted. She must of had some good pou nanny. Later on when she got older if she crossed path with any of them, she would befriend them. She wasn't the greatest singer but she had a pretty good voice. Her voice was really underrated. When she was lead singer with the supremes, she had this smooth silky voice and the way she moved her body movements and her lips and her facial was so seductive. You couldn't take your eyes off her. The best stage presence ever.

FYI -- Diana Ross' antics regarding the Supremes drag (i.e., copying other acts and then going on before them so that they look like the copy cats) has been documented in several autobiographies -- Patti's, Gladys Knight's, and Martha Reeves'. So clearly, any suggestion that Patti or anyone else was jealous of Diana Ross is quite backward. Only someone insecure in herself would find it necessary to see what other acts are wearing, go out and get the same thing, and go on before them to ensure that they look like they are copying her.

@@Maatization Gurl. First of all, they were not teens. They were young women in their twenties at the time, and if the story has been told by Patti, Gladys, and Martha, then it's a true story. Of course, Diana isn't talking about it and why would she? I wouldn't want people to know that when I was coming up in the business, I stole and connived to carve out my place when my talent alone could not guarantee it for me. I take nothing away from Diana's icon status. She IS an icon. But that doesn't mean she's above reproach or that she got there by playing fair. The truth is the truth.
Diana is a living legend in every country on the globe...she ain't checking for those chicks....she's living large..they would all give their right arm to have career and global stardom...so what if they can sing better...a good voice is a dime a dozen...but only one Diana Ross.

The gold suit was pretty bad, but it was just one small story repeated over and over. Labelle didn't seem that pressed about it really and seemed to only say that story because it was like the only story she had about Diana Ross back then. She was otherwise very respectful.
you cant be as gracious and as flattering as Patti was at the end, if you're not confident about your own talent. Ive seen Patti a lot over the yrs, going back to when her and Nona/Sarah, were on their Nightbirds tour (1975)...and I came close to seeing Diana live, when she pulled together a "reunion tour" in 2001, I think it was...but it never came to fruition, and I lost that chance. But to say Im big fans of both is an understatement. It doesnt surprise me that they 'made up'...they were practically girls, when their respective groups were rivals. These are grown-ass women now, who have made a ton of money, global fame, won awards and are literally bridges to a time when black singers, male and female, werent making any money to speak of..and they sang to earn money for travel and food. They should be applauded for enduring and blazing paths for the Mariah Careys and Jennifer Hudsons.
