If you only compare 5-series & E class, the new E class is by far a better looking car. Regardless of target market, but even so, its elegance and beauty as we used to expect from Mercedes. Love the design of this new E !

I think that, objectively assessed, it is a very close call between today's E-class and the 5-series. It's mostly about personal preferences. The BMW is hardly as sport-oriented as previous generations have been and the Mercedes is more driver-oriented than previous generations. Personally, I like the design of the Mercedes and I think that the BMW has some unfortunate angles where it seems a bit bloated. Correspondingly also with the driver's environment and the dashboard. I'm not a big fan of BMW's new stand-alone screen. The way Mercedes has solved this seems more sophisticated in my opinion.

It was one of the best cars available.

I drove the previous generation of both the Mercedes and BMW, I can say the Mercedes is far superior in comfort at high speeds and in town. I test drove the new 5 series last week, it didn't impress me. Adding to the awkward design, I will stick with my previous generation E class.

Thanks for this input. Personally, when I look back from to present I miss the build quality of w140 and w124. Yes people usually say this, but my point is why have fake exhaust tips, why cheap plastics. One would argue because of cost, but Mercedes Benz built their company most on engineering so why introduce or engineer materials that are cheap but of quality, let exhaust tips be exhaust tips. Let there be an option for real exhaust tips since the German companies like options.
When look at these new Mercedes Benz cars I ask myself how much of Benz is in this car, I mean we have Renault engines in some of Mercedes Benz vehicles. And then there was the X Class.
This is a nice car and I have respect for Mercedes Benz engineers and staff, as well as Renault’s. But I ask myself is this a Mercedes Benz with quality and reliability in mind, especially with reliability. And this question goes to all car makers, Wouldn’t a more reliable car be more sustainable to the environment and to maintain?
I am a BMW fan but I do become concerned when several journalists point out BMW is use better quality materials than Mercedes Benz. Back in the I would happily point out Mercedes Benz car have better interiors. I cannot do that confidently now.
Apologies if I have offended anyone but I think Mercedes Benz can do better. As for BMW some of their designs are questionable.

E-class looks better than 5 series, but the touch buttons on the doors and steering wheel are annoying.
Took a C-class for test drive and could not close the door from the inside without messing with the touch buttons on them. Also managed to change the radio channel alot and cluster view while driving.
So I would put my monney on team BMW (actually already did by ordering the X1 30e).

Yes, diesel is ok. Diesel is OK for Hyundai SantaFe, diesel is ok for Hyundai Staria, diesel is ok for Mercedes Vito but diesel in the E-Class? I just don't get it. I do not have money for the E Class but I would assume that, if I could afford an E-Class, I would be able to pay for the petrol. The closer I was to buying a new sedan was the Citroen C5X and, if it would have had any good engines, most likely I would have bought it. The choice between the 1.2 3 cylinder turbo petrol and the 1.6 4 cylinder turbo petrol with PHEV just does not make sense for me and both of them ar bad for different reasons. The 2.2 HDI 204ps from back in the day would have been a perfect option. Even the 2.0 HDI 180ps would have been acceptable so yeah, diesel are good sometimes.

@10mbc it's not necessarily about the cost of fuel (which with high milage will add up), but about convenience. You know how EVs are sold on the basis that you don't need to visit the petrol station, because you can charge at home? Well, sometimes you have to visit a charging station, which sucks balls. And with this Merc you can drive from Berlin to Paris non-stop (if your bladder can take it), and not visit the petrol station either :)

This car's styling is very colour dependent. Basically it looks much better to me in darker colours. In lighter colours, the rather over-fussy nature of styling makes it look a bit dated. I've got a 2018 E class and I just love it's elegant, understated styling, which is why I've hung onto it for so long.

As a current e-coupe owner (29yo), I think this car is a lot better than the other new-gen Mercedes. I think it's a shame that the CLE has the shameful C-class interior. I don't particularly like the star taillights or the black plastic around the grille of the w214. I also hate the black plastic on the interior including the capacitive touch and off-the-shelf modules surrounding the seat controls. I think passenger displays are all useless gimmicks because they are obsolete with phones and iPads everywhere. They will not age well and take the place of the architecture and décor. Luckily you can get the wood in this car. I'm hoping they fix these things in the facelift - then I might consider buying an e450 with extended leather and no superscreen.

And i definitely want a car, that has a 330 liter bootspace and weights 400kg more due to the battery that after the batteries are empty consumes way more petrol due to the weight. It's absurd that this is twice as expensive than a Model 3 LR, for twice as bad performance. For sure you don't get 45k euro more of a car for your money. No wonder why Tesla and the Chinese will run the Europe manufacturers to the ground. Such a shame.
In the past there was clear difference that you were getting for your money, both performance and technology. 10-15 years ago only premium cars were offering adaptive cruise control and such advanced stuff, so it was a clear differentiatior. Now it's a joke.
