Me and my therapy dog of 14 years have that special bond you're talking about at the end of the video (owner gravity). We have been together 24/7 since he was 8 weeks old, and he can "sense" what I want without me asking, and he pays attention to me basically all the time and has a drive to please me. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with mouth cancer 3 weeks ago, and will soon be leaving me for the first, and only time, to cross over the rainbow bridge. But in 6 weeks time, I'm getting a new little therapy dog (8 week old puppy), and I'll teach him everything I taught my old dog, and hopefully, we'll develop the same deep bond and understanding. 🥰💖

So So fast. PR changed our rescue Boxer within hours. Not days. Hours. Previously he would hardly sit and was told NO NO NO! He's a Boxer (stubborn), and he would not listen. Now he's a completely changed dog, He wants to learn, he wants to please and he's an absolute joy to our family. We still have the odd issue we are working on, but Positive Reinforcement training is giving us and the dog huge benefits
As we condition our dogs with positive reinforcement to make them feel good around us, they do exactly the same thing with us. Every time my dog chooses to come to me or asks me to pet her, I feel a rush of happiness that makes me wanna repeat that action over and over again. It goes both ways

Sooo many good ideas on getting more bang for your training buck on this channel, I love it. I've really upped my use of touch for our new dog, who is easily confused when food is present, is finding it really difficult to tune in to voice commands and seems to get fazed if I do too much verbal praise . I love having a different way to reinforce with her, thanks.

I learn so much with you I have actually made a BIG step with my 4 girls.
Loved this video, great info a good refresher in the psych. dept. for poochies and people. It is a good reminder to use what you teach all day as a normal interaction with your dog and eventually, it all starts clicking. When we get lazy our dogs get confused/and or forget, just our fault, but easily fixed. The only time things really fall apart is about 1-2 years before your pup passes on, then we just have to understand and compensate, they just can not do it anymore until God calls them over the rainbow bridge. Keep sharing = caring, blessings to you and yours, you make a difference in the lives of many dogs and their families.
Thank you so much !!! I've adopted my dog a year ago and was having some troubles with her. I knew I had to do something myself, it wasn't the dogs fault. Everybody gave me these advices and I even had 2 dog trainers. But nobody was able to explain what you just did in the past few video's. I learned sooooo much about getting a bond with my dog, earning her respect and trust in a positive way.

Thank you so much for not lumping all dogs into this training mentality. I have a working line german shepherd and have a decent amount of experience with high drive working and sport lines. While I have seen incredible results using a strong reward-based system with a natural behaviors, I have also found that I need to quickly deploy a negative reinforcement tool if boundaries are being pushed rapidly. I've had moments where I was aware that there would be a potential for a live bite if I didn't have a strong correction tool like an e-collar or choker available to me. But I love the psychology breakdown of how their behavioral patterns work and I actually learned a ton from your video.
I’ve been using these tactics for the last week and it’s amazing how quickly they work! I mean, my wife always checks in with me now and my kids always want to make sure I’m happy! 100% recommend! Oh, also worked on my puppy 🐶

We have a 9 week old Toller in the house now along with our 14 year old Cockapoo. 14 years is far enough in the past that we'd forgotten how challenging it can be to have a new puppy, your videos have been very helpful in helping us with the new family member. We were never able to successfully crate train our senior dog, that's not going to happen with the new pup for sure - frozen, stuffed Kongs are already in the freezer.

Great video! I give my dog a lot of massages at home and will start to do massage with treats to reduce the treats when we are out walking! (Because) last summer I had a wonderful dog staying over. It was a pleasure starting from day one. But over time, up until the very last day he was there, I felt our bond growing, increased understanding and increasingly feeling comfortable with eachother. I think it'd be great if you made a video or even few videos talking about cruel and/or inhumane """training""" techniques that are sadly used and recommended, like using electro shock collars, spanking, water spraying etc. there are many ""techniques"" people recommend to each other that aren't at all techniques and resemble abuse more than anything and I think it'd be good to have someone point out to people who might be applying those out of ignorance that they might be hurting traumatizing or confusing their dogs,... many dogs who were trained with these improper ways that I've known ended up in shelters becuase they do not work and sometimes even cause behavioral problems

Hi, I am in the UK and love watching your videos. I have a Lhasa Apso puppy just one year old and I want to show her. I have tried all ways to get her to stack but she will only do it when I have a lure right under her nose!! The minute my hand moves, so does her head LOL. Just wondered whether you have any ideas on how I can get her to stay in position without a lure...which I would give after she had followed the command?

Thank you for reinforcing my method of training. I have a Service Dog her name is Daisy. She is a great Sheltie mix. She is very happy and is one of the best dogs I have ever had. I like what you said about using there name to much. Daisy only looks at my if I raise my voice. And I don't like to even speak loudly. But I'm going to train her only using her name once then I will use Princess for talking with her. I talk to her all the time. We take two one hour walks a day. At sunrise and sunset. I need her to retrieve my meds, she refuses to put the ball in my hand or at my feet. She drops it and won't pick it up when I tell her to. She needs this skill to be the best service dog that I know she is extremely bright. She is a couple of months over a year old. I would have had her for a year in November. I rescued her from the local shelter. I got her just in time. My last dog was Captain Jack the Growler, he was extremely stubborn and would growl to tell me off. But he had a brain tumor and cancer all through his tiny body. It was horrible watching him slow down. He was the third senior dog I had. He had to be put down because he was having seizing fits. There was nothing that could have been done. So Daisy just learned how to jump on s table top. That will turn into a fun trick to amuse children and people in retirement homes. We plan on visiting our local children's hospital in s month. So I need to train her to put the ball in my hand or at my feet. Got any suggestions? I could use your help if you could find the time.

Awesome video! My only question is how regularly should treats be involved? Are treats more for dedicated training sessions where you're actively and consistently trying to teach a behavior? For example, our pup (13 weeks) will get caught chewing on things or trying to jump on things where our only immediate option is command followed by praise + physical affection, because the treats aren't nearby. He seems to be responding pretty well to this so far, but could always be better. Thanks so much!
Hi Ian! I have been watching your videos on TH-cam and I also bought the Online Dog Training Essentials. You are so awesome, and so helpful. My husband and I just welcomed our Golden Retriever puppy into our home this week. She is 11 weeks old, and has a lot of energy. We have tried the engagement training, so we can build value on the "yes marker" however, our puppy gets distracted so easily, and doesn't seem to be very motivated by yummy treats!!! Any suggestions?

Absolutely you can do it immediately! Remember that we are ALWAYS Classically Conditioning our dogs, so getting those feel good vibes in them right away will help build a strong bond very quickly!

Zak is awesome! So is Ian. They just have slightly different approaches. But both are filled with positivity and a clear love for all dogs. Zak does not only use treats, he's just more subtle about the rest, whereas Ian really dives in to the neuroscience behind the rest.
Agree 100% my dog will do anything of I'm giving her loades of incredible treats, it's when i don't have diced chicken or sliced hot dogs that impresses me!

Awesome videos just a quick question. Im trying to crate train for potty training. And it doesnt seem to be working. I have the dog on an eating routine, many walks since its a 13 wk puppy, midnight walks and morning walks. Praises and treats and potting outside. I dont think he sees the connection yet with going outside. Do i just need to wait a little longer and have patience? Need your expertise. Bucthe way, its a frenchie. He seems to be a little hard headed to.

They interbred those with what was left of the Bernese Mountain sock back in the late 1800's. No wonder my Bernese looks so similar. Now I wonder what the original Bernese looked like. The coloring is different of course but the body is very similar. Thanks for the response.
Lol.. "In a nutshell there are several spots..pleasure centers...". I think that was just about every part of the dog; in other words, that was more like the whole nut, the shell and the tree.

hey man, just stumbled upon your channel, you look like a great trainer! and great info! it's very important that you never overuse treats, I see way to many people doing that, just wondering, are you a positive ONLY trainer? or do you use other methods as well? I am a balanced trainer (trainer who rewards good behavior, and corrects bad, and uses many different methods).
HAH! OMG that's a loaded question. For this I'll quote trainer Ruth Crisler who said:
"I’m not big on labels, especially empty ones. Tags like positive or balanced don’t signify much, in my opinion, beyond the public image a trainer wishes to project. These are marketing terms, not definable training methods. Yet all of dogdom seems to have settled into the opinion that every trainer is either one or the other."
My style is science-based with heart. I will apply the best technique in a given situation to create the most humane, healthy, and productive result I can. I want results for my students, and a better life for their dogs. I adhere to the LIMA model (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive). I also tend to work like a Process Engineer, culling from many experiences, disciplines, and techniques to tailor-fit training.
As Dr. Ian Dunbar said, communication has to be binary. So yes, of course I communicate both when a dog is doing it right and when they're doing it wrong. The "HOW" of doing it is the art of training and some trainers are surgeons and some are lumberjacks. I like to think I'm in the former category, rather than the latter. You catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar, and I find that patience and consistency teaches more than demonstrations of power ever will.
That said, you are also right: overuse and dependency on food is easy and troublesome. But I use food, and I make sure to coach my students to get rid of it quickly. Everything starts in a reward-based system and for most dogs that's adequate when done right. Same concept with tools, though, whether a head halter, slip lead, pinch collar, remote collar...overuse and dependency is easy and very troublesome. But I use them on the right dogs at the right time and I coach my students to get rid of them quickly. A dog that can't perform without a tool on them is just as bad as a dog that can't perform without food.
So cool to hear about some of the theories behind dog training! I haven't heard it explained in such simple and accessible terms before, I love that!
But I have a somewhat unrelated question: We have recently adopted a street dog, and she is great in so many ways - but she just do not know what to do with toys. She seems interested when she sees other dogs play with them and will follow a ball when thrown, but we cannot get her to put her teeth on them, to pull, pick up or even touch any of them reliably. Well, all except the Kong, that works, and we do regularly feed her meals that way to teach her that it's okay to put her teeth on rubber. Any other good ideas how we can maybe get her playing? Because she seems to get more and more bored and we want her to have something to entertain herself with or even play with us with.

Hi Ian! Thank you so much for the effort you put into your videos. They're really helpful and a constant reminder that it can be done. I was wondering if you had any advice on how to stop biting.... my puppy doesn't just nibble she full on bites and I've tried to distract her with chew toys, removing my hands, walking away, praising when she stops biting but it's only escalating.

I have that problem with my puppy too. I've even tried the yelping thing, but that only makes him more excited. Although having a small "time out" zone for him to cool down in seems to be helping a bit.
I had that problem too but my puppy eventually outgrew it. I followed one of Zak George's videos on biting. If I remember correctly, he says to make a fist and hold still to make it really boring for your dog to bite and then reward them when they stop. My puppy is a chihuahua mix so the biting wasn't unbearable but it was still painful. She still likes to "feel" my hands with her teeth but it's pretty soft now.

Hi Hillary! Super common question and I'm developing a video for this. For now, though, all the previous advice is good, but make no mistake you MUST give feedback about the biting. People make the mistake of trying to stop the biting and this is wrong. The more a puppy uses its mouth, the safer it will be as an adult. The proper training progression is not a reduction in frequency, but a gradual reduction in force. You only have the first few months to teach force before the brain chemistry changes and locks it in; you can teach frequency any time in a dog's life. So use the time NOW to teach softer and softer mouth over time. The "yelping" is the best type of feedback, but don't yip like a puppy. You're a grown woman. Say, "OUCH! That really hurt you little worm!" And play stops for a few seconds. YOUR PUPPY WILL PROBABLY TRY IT AGAIN. This is how they learn. Plus, you must be able to get away from them. This is another reason why strategic confinement is so important. Taking the puppy to a timeout is just confrontational. But YOU leaving them behind is much more psychologically significant. So YOU walk away when the biting gets too much. Confinement makes it so the puppy can't follow. Baby gates and such are perfect for this. And then you come back in a minute and try again. You may have to repeat. SO REPEAT IT. As many times as it takes. People get too frustrated with puppies, too fast. If something doesn't work the first time they move on to a new strategy. It doesn't work that way. It's attrition, it's application, and it's repetition. If the bites get softer and softer, you're doing it right.
SIDE NOTE: this strategy is no good past 6 months unless you've started it with them already. I've seen people try this with 8 month old puppies...it's too late. This strategy teaches FORCE. They'll have to teach frequency and hope for the best as an adult!

I have a American Bully and every sense I have had him, I've only worked with him on hand and head, eye communicating, nothing verbal until we hit the streets and he pays so close attention to me it ridiculous, right on my side or if someone confronts me he stands right between my legs with out hands or voice.
