    Peanut butter on a spoon (no xyltiol!) is great for luring. Also you can mix it with baby food and put it in a tube and just squirt out the amount you need. You can feed it on your finger, right out of the tube, or put it on something else (helpful for targeting esp with fearful dogs). I use the broccoli and cauliflower stems that come in the bags I steam for myself. I also use dried sardines. I suppose you could use the fresh ones if you can stand them. Unfortunately I can't use kibble because my dog has multiple allergies.

    Your channel is seriously awesome. We have brought home an 11 week old Cockapoo about 4 weeks ago, so she’s near 4 months now and your tips and suggestions (such as on bite inhibition) have been the most successful. We’re struggling a little with training because she does NOT seem food motivated AT ALL. Hell I’m concerned she’s going to be malnourished (our vet assures is otherwise and she seems to have plenty of enough energy and spirit).
    We’ve been through Blue Wilderness Puppy - chicken, Royal Canine Puppy Chow, and home made chicken breast, livers, carrot Brown rice and broccoli mash. Nothing’s really clicked. We’ve noticed before that hand feeding seems to help but we somehow never made the connection. Also smoking her kibble in yogurt for a long time helps.
    We’re going to try your moistening the kibble, hand feeding and wellness core brand next. Will update on results.

    We are planning to adopt an adult doggo soon, and I find your videos super helpful... especially since unlike my SO, I never owned a dog. I wonder if in the first week of training we should be more generous with rewards for dog and give more treats than kibble for doing stuff? For the dog its a new, and stressful situation where even going to eliminate can be an achievement. At the same time, I dont know if that would set higher expectation for treats from dog. Thanks for great work you do! Looking forward to learn more!

    Some of my tervuren's all-time favorite HVT's include shredded chicken breast, deli turkey breast, salmon flavor lick sticks, organic hot dogs, and dehydrated chicken breast chunks for when spoilage is a concern. Usually a really obnoxious squeaky toy will do the trick just as well as any treat though.

    What a great video! It never occurred to me to use reward scaling to teach vocal urgency -- what a smart way and a good way to keep your dogs CALM and obedient in an urgent situation (I know in the event of say, a fire, I would NOT be able to control my volume or pitch!) .... I will add that I think a big part of kibble-reward is not overfeeding. Most people I think massively overfeed their dogs. (I remember in your kong video, you recommended splitting up the entire daily recommended amount -- a smart idea -- to avoid overfeeding.) Speaking of which -- I kept meaning to go back and mention! Before I forget I'll just say it here... In the Kong video you recommend getting a larger sized Kong! That is a good idea, however, you have to make sure the opening of the kong is just small enough the dog can't get their lower jaw INSIDE the kong and get stuck. My smallest pup sometimes sneaks over and steals her big brother and sister's kongs and CAN get her lower jaw inside and gets stuck for a second, luckily so far I have been able to just help her out but I've heard of some dogs getting REALLY stuck and needing a vet trip to cut off the Kong. I think you can find sizing and safety info on the kong web site for this or just email them to ask and check.... But just keep that in mind and maybe mention it to clients/etc, that would be terrifying for a pup!

    • @NomadicGearhead
      @NomadicGearhead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS: Not criticizing just trying to spread safety info -- thanks for all you do!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's a good point! Some of the reports about getting stuck in Kongs came from the older ball with only one hole; a suction would be created and the dog would get stuck in it. Some dogs lost their tongues because of it. That ball has been discontinued. Whatever brand toy you get like this, make sure there are TWO holes so there can't be a suction problem. I had not heard about lower jaws getting caught, so that's a good heads up for the rest of us - thanks! No matter what, I always try to remind people that "You mileage may vary" and to always think critically about what you give your dog and how you use it, regardless of what I or anyone else says. Thanks for your comment!

    I use milk bone trail mix for treats. It's cheap and very small, which is good because we use quantity for jackpots (as we don't always have dog safe meat lying around). Carrots also work for one of our dogs, and plain bread sometimes works as a jackpot (because dons love it for some reason?)

    We have a 4 1/2 month old mixed breed we adopted from rescue organization. We know we need to quickly accelerate socialization because our pup is timid about many things and we know that window for exposing her and creating positive experiences is closing fast! So my question is, when we are doing protected socialization is it best to do treats, kibble, or should we start even higher?
    By the way, we’ve had our dog for 5 days, I’ve binge watched many of your videos, and I have learned so much!! THANK YOU!!! I will be telling everyone I know about Simpawtico!

    I haven't reduced but replaced rewards during my training, over time. I also look for opportunities to know if my pup wants something, and he only gets it after working for me. For example, his favourite chew toy, a game of tug, the ball he likes to chase after, or just a belly rub. I have even switched it to the simple water bowl as a reward.

  • @laurenhegarty6317

    Love this idea! I'm wondering how you have these different levels of treats ready to deploy at the right time? If I go out on a walk and plan to stop and do some training, do I need to have all 3 options - kibble, treats, and jackpots - on me? If I'm training with kibble and my dog does something extra special, do I have time to go run and get a treat or jackpot? How do I organize myself and my treats to give the right treat at the precise moment? Thank you for the tips!!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hi Lauren! Great questions. The main thing is to plan ahead and focus on one or two goals in a session. The criterion you're trying to reach compared to your dog's current skill level in that thing will tell you what you need. Some things are just for maintenance, so kibble is fine. Some things need polishing up, in which case kibble and treats are what you need. New things or hard things will need treats and jackpots.
      You can do this a couple of different ways. I usually throw a few jackpots into the treats I'm using when I'm working on something out and about. It's not all three levels, but I can kick it up if needed. If you're just on the fly and you don't have a higher value reward with you, you can deliver multiples for better performance, e.g. super prompt and polite could get a Treat-Treat-Treat rapid fire.
      Finally, you COULD throw all three into a bag or two. As long as you've taught your dog how Markers work (watch the marker training video: th-cam.com/video/v1RyeMfS0Vo/w-d-xo.html ) that will buy you some time to get the appropriate reward out. Mainly though, don't overthink it. Your voice is your #1 tool and tone and volume will do a lot of reward scaling too by itself. Just take what you think you might need for the practice you're going to do, and go with it. Hope that helps!

    Hello! I love the channel. It's been a great resource the past month or two. My wife and I are about to get our first puppy together and we've learned a lot here. I do have a question about this particular video though. I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Are you saying that it's best to not feed our puppies from a bowl at any point during the first 18 weeks of it's life? Or were you only meaning to hand feed during training? If it's hand feed only for the first 18 weeks, I wonder how you would suggest we give them the experience of eating out of a bowl during socialization training? Would we just get their bowl (or maybe a variety of bowls) and just place a piece in the bowls from time to time? Or is it strictly hand to mouth? Thanks!

    I am in the process of picking a dog companion, and trying to figure out the training system to use. I see many trainers who advocate training with food, in the theory that they will see you as the source of all that is good, and therefore listen you. On the other hand, I have seen trainers who say that you should NEVER hand feed your dog because as a "pack animal" the dog sees your relinquishing of food as a submissive act, which makes them less likely to obey.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hi Jim. Well for starters, you can throw all that "pack animal" stuff in the trash. Every, and I mean EVERY credible, peer-reviewed scientific study on both dogs AND Wolves have completely changed those old notions. Wolf packs don't behave like they're usually characterized, and dogs aren't even true pack animals anymore. Their behavior motivations are different and there isn't one single scientific study validating that "pack animal" cycle of endless struggle idea. Hell, even in Wolf packs they'll relinquish food to other pack members, particularly the young and old ones, because they need it most, contrary to what everyone thinks about "being the Alpha," (oftentimes totally misunderstood). However, dogs ARE ruthlessly practical and opportunistic, meaning if they can get what they want for nothing, they absolutely will, like a bum roommate! Being that's the case, food is an excellent motivator for a dog, an animal classified as a scavenger. In most cases - scratch that - in almost ALL cases, it's a problem with the handler and/or trainer not executing properly and letting their dog slip through loop holes. Hand feeding is a POWERFUL technique, and it will most definitely NOT compromise your training if you do it smart. It's also important to note that a submissive act towards your dog is not an inherently bad thing. Again, science and current Canine psychology/ethology understanding has proven that dogs do not vie for status in some kind of human+dog imaginary pack. If a dog thinks he can get away with something, he will...because he can and it's fun, not because he thinks he owns you. Think more like punk toddler, more than a calculating socialite. If you're interested in learning more on the science I can point you to some sources. Hope this helps!

    I personally use a two teir approach inky because I'm currently raising a 4 1/2 month old Pitbull/lab mix. Shes super smart and extremely food motivated. I would love to use a 3 tier approach but shes so smart and observant...I try to be sneaky when giving treats cuz shes getting to the point where she knows what to do and only does it if she thinks shes getting rewarded. So I have a treat pouch that has a "jackpot" compartment and larger compartment for "normal treats". (E.g kibble). Unfortunstely it can be a bit cumbersome for me to have to get a lil snack sandwhich bag and throw it in the mix.
    For high value I use a freeze dried salmon all natural organic treat or blueberries. And for her regular/kibble type treats she gets ziwi peaks dog food. I love them because they're natural and they break up in my fingers really easily. I'm an huge fan of small lil treats that she can chew once or twice and be focused and ready for the next command.

    Please post a video on how to train a reactive dog! Thanks you're awesome!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Jasmine! Working with a reactive dog is WAY beyond the scope of TH-cam. It requires a real personal touch for each dog and for each situation. As a conscientious professional I wouldn't feel good sharing things that might either be too superficial for a dog/situation or be counter productive for an owner. If you have a reactive dog I recommend finding a behaviorist in your area that can really sit down with you and design a plan for your specific needs. Too many variables for TH-cam, I'm afraid!

    • @houndlander

    Can I soak or toss the kibble in like chicken broth (from actual chicken not the can) or tuna juice to make the kibble taste good? I’m very new to this and I’m trying to train my 8 month rescue Husky. He’s stubborn like a Husky but doesn’t seem to be interested in a lot. I think he is more treat motivated then toy or praise motivated but he looses his interests quickly and I’m trying to be better and strategic about it. I’ve only had him for about 5 days now

    I am wondering if there are any videos regarding dogs with a high food drive. Not food guarding (yet) but food obsessed, gulp gone. We have introduced a slow bowl which prevents this but wonder if there is a strategy that encourages enjoyment of daily meals. Is this something to be concerned about? We are a two-dog family and have a pretty consistent feeding routine. Should we worry about food aggression becoming a thing? Our dog is a 10-month-old Husky mix whose behaviors are quite good in most respects and he is responsive and tentative.

    Ian, we have a puppy on the way in a couple weeks. Your comment about hand feeding/chew toy feeding a puppy up to 18 weeks has me wondering. What is the rationale? Every meal? Any tips on where I can go for more info? Great videos, great resource! Thanks!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tim! The main rationale is that all the most common behavior problems in dogs are predictable and preventable. Most folks are reactionary-that is to say they wait for problems to become too annoying before doing anything. With puppies, it's ridiculously easy to lay a groundwork that short circuits most of these problems before it's ever even an issue. Hand feeding a) helps teach polite mouth control, b) prevents resource guarding, c) helps with bonding and leadership, d) monitors food intake, e) is a tremendous opportunity to teach other things whereas a bowl just squanders that. I highly recommend the books "Before You Get Your Puppy" and "After You Get Your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar (who not only invented puppy classes in the 80's but has also participated in some of the most important studies on puppy behavior and development). Both of those are free on my website on the Puppy Class page, or you can order print versions on Amazon. Also, check out the website DogStarDaily.com

    Hey Ian, I understand your stance on food not being taken for granted but my GSD pup's breeder specifically free feeds to keep from building food aggression between the animals and pack mates. We do have a multi-animal and multi-dog household, and Im worried if I start to ration daily kibble it will turn into aggressive action when Im working with one dog over the other, i've actually seen some of this behavior from one of the dogs (surprisingly not my GSD) when im training using low-cal treats. any tips?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Garrett. I would suggest that your breeder's idea is misguided. You avoid problems with more structure, not less. Free feeding doesn't necessarily keep a dog from resource guarding. It does, however, remove one of their biggest daily motivators which is to work for food. There's no free feeding in the wild. It's a totally unnatural scenario. Especially for GSDs, working to eat is one of the most fundamental components of a working breed dog's mind. I have a multi-dog household too and we're on timed, routine feedings. We don't have a guarding problem because there's a routine, a procedure, and every dog knows their place in the event. This kind of structure is exactly what a dog (and child, for that matter) craves. People go on and on about "being a pack leader" and, well, this is exactly how that's done: supportive structure, reliable schedule, and benevolent (but steadfast) leadership.
      So, to answer your question more directly: MORE STRUCTURE is how you do it. Rehearse it, show them what's right, and problem solve as you go while problems are small. Don't ration the meals willy nilly. Make a plan, work the plan, stick to the plan, teach the plan. If you're seeing a resource guarding issue, than free feeding is going to just mask it. The problem will still be there. Fix that problem and help that dog on it's own. And then globally empower not just the food in your household, but the ways in which your dogs access it through you. Hope that helps!

    @b0nes95 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ian, I know I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but;
    In one of your video's, you tell us future puppy owners to be very structural in week 1. You have to establish a good base and not focus too much on 'fun' tricks.
    Yet here, you give a solid piece of advice, namely just free-feeding your pup the first 18 weeks from the hand or Kong toy. I assume this is to teach them without overfeeding and also teach them to enjoy being alone.
    Which one is true though? Do I just free-feed the first 18 weeks and try to teach as much as possible, then switch to regular feeding times?
    Would appreciate if you could clear this up. Thanks!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a stupid question. I did not say "free feed," I said "hand feed." Big difference. I never recommend free feeding. Hand feeding means you're still doing your routine, timed feedings, but the food all comes from your hands (or the Kong). It's still on a schedule. This aligns perfectly with the structured training because you're establishing both a routine and an expectation along with it. I can see where it may have sounded like I recommended routine feeds for adults in contrast, but my meaning is that they're ALL on a schedule. I just wanted to emphasize that using a bowl for a puppy is a waste of opportunity, whereas handfeeding or using a Kong will get you way more bang for your buck. Adolescents and adults can use a bowl, unless they need alone-time or crate training (in which case you can use a Kong).

    • @b0nes95
      @b0nes95 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reading this, I question my own way of thinking. I completely understand now, the point is to use the timed feedings to teach them as well. That's great advice and I will definitely be doing that!

    I love doing everything with my dog, including eating with them, so I use that time when I'm eating to train my dog impulse control. It's very tempting to want to reach over and lick the plate or snatch the food when I'm not looking and if I train her while I'm eating, then I get to share my meal and have a polite dog.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends how you define "Human food." When we say that your dog shouldn't have human food we're talking about cheeseburgers and pizza and cake. Things like chicken or turkey or certain fruits and vegetables...those aren't necessarily purely "human" foods and are perfectly healthy for dogs, as well as high value. In any event, a jackpot is anything that your dog finds ultra-high value.

      Hi Carly. You don't sound dumb! And kudos for trying to research and learn! I would say most dogs are going to be interested in ALL food; that's their natural state, they're opportunistic scavengers. The solution in training, then, isn't necessarily to remove "human food" hoping they'll differentiate, the solution is to teach impulse control and manners. Then I can use whatever I want to train and still have a dog that leaves my sandwich alone on the coffee table. Hope that helps and good luck!

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Michaela! Then you've got two options. 1) train your dog to love them. It's not what it is, it's what you train it to be; 2) appeal to something other than hunger drive and use toys. Hunger drive and prey/chase drive are really your only options for training motivation to start. Motivation to work because they love the work can be cultivated, but it doesn't start that way, just as it is with us.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's not necessarily that kibble is unhealthy. Good quality kibble has a lot going for it. The problems with ALL kibble are: 1) not enough calories devoted to protein, 2) unbalanced and/or incomplete fats, and 3) cannot be nutritionally balanced without fresh foods added. This is directly from nutritionist Steve Brown, as well as Drs. Becker and Pitcairn, noted canine nutritionists. Kibble- when served alongside fresh, correctly prepared fresh foods-is fine. It's the cumulative effect of years of a kibble ONLY diet that's the unhealthy option. Check out these books on Amazon:

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Whoa whoa whoa! Easy, Vickie. It's not that serious. It's true that dogs are all lactose intolerant to some degree or another. You may just get some gas, or you may get diarrhea and itchiness. Every dog will react based on their genetic makeup, and how much and what kind of cheese. You should ALWAYS stay away from the super-processed stuff like queso sauce or cheeze-whiz. Always avoid spicy cheeses like pepper-jack. The more esoteric a cheese is - like brie or limbergher - that's also a good indicator to keep it away from your dog. Mild cheeses are best as opposed to sharp cheeses (which is why I used a picture of swiss in the video). All the shelters around here use cheese and xylitol-free peanut butter as high-value treats. Even my vet does. But they all, like me, use it sparingly. Always exercise moderation with cheese. Keep their intake at a reasonable amount; don't overdo it. And bottom line: if your dog can't tolerate even rare, small portions of cheese, DON'T USE IT. Problem solved.
