    Good reminder! I had to really turn my feedback on a dime from a good boy for potty, leave it (ignored) and then drop it for a cigarette butt, and then another good boy for dropping it.
    We also used the technique from the puppy biting video and our little guy has improved soooo much over the month that we’ve had him. Thank you!

    This video is already making a difference in my training with my 3.5 month old puppy. I didn't even realize that I wasn't praising her for stopping bad behaviors when I told her to do so. I was doing great at praising for good behaviors, but had a total blind spot in my communication with her on the bad ones. Thanks so much!

    I have learned to always have treats ready to grab and give to the dog. That works out great! The hard part is when your on a walk in very cold weather and you have gloves on.

    • @imzadi83fanvids7
      @imzadi83fanvids7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, gloves are difficult. You do have more time though if you use a reward marker. Also using a tube with a paste like treat (peanut butter mixed with baby food is my go to) can help as you can just squeeze a little out for the dog to lick.

    This is the probably the fifth time I have watched this video since it was posted. The reason I have come back to it so frequently is because it serves as training for me. It reminds me that in order create the best learning situation for my companion I must use every teachable moment in an immediate manner while remembering that sometimes lack of bad behaviors are rewardable in and of themselves!
    Thanks Ian.

    Love this. I have been trying to get my bf to be more vocal with his praise and use the "good boy" often. Bf tends to just pull on the leash if he wants something from the dog. I catch myself using a lot of words to give feedback "this way..no..YES" Others will think I am crazy but it works!

    I don't have a dog yet, but I like to prepare myself for when I do get one. Since watching these videos (and reading a book by Tamar Geller) I noticed how many people excuse bad behaviour (barking or jumping) as the dog's fault, rather than their fault as a trainer. Especially when they've had other dogs who didn't do those things. So I thought it was great when you said, that you should reprimand yourself for missing it instead of the dog for doing it.

    Excellent advice! I am always amazed by some dog training programmes that make it look like you can change things in two minutes flat (looking at you the otherwise excellent Victoria Stilwell!). It gives people wrong expectations - this stuff takes time and patience. Learning Clicker training helps...but you really have to be super quick! And patience! May I be granted lots as my lovely dog passes through puberty!

    Stumbled across your videos, just love them! I have a question that is perhaps answered in one of your videos if you could direct me? Bringing a new 9 week Boston Terrier home in 3 weeks. I understand it will take time to crate train. In the meantime what do we do with puppy at night? Wait until full crate training is done before cratting it at night (of course letting him out every 2 to 3 hours for potty time) what do you recommend to best shape the night time expectations? I see a lot of suggestions that we start out with him in our room but long term that isnt where we would like him to be. We will do it if it's the best for a puppy though!

    Ian-I love your channel and am constantly recommending it to my family and friends. This is a great video!
    Could you do a video on how to calm your dog down when another dog is barking? My rescue pup (had him 2.5 months) is very reactive and fearful around other dogs. He’s friendly if they are but things don’t always go well.
    Recently on a walk, a dog was in his fenced yard and started barking at my dog Bilbo. Bilbo barked back, and all of their barking set off a dog a few doors down, which set off a dog on the other block. It was 7 AM. Totally embarrassing and annoying to the neighbors. I don’t know how to train him to respond calmly in those situations! Please help!! Thank you!!

    Such a great video. Quick question - my pups are generally great on leash but if they do get to the end of the leash and we stop what should I be doing here? I'm currently either waiting for them to offer their attention before walking on/praising OR calling their attention with "look"/name/kissy noise etc before walking on/praising OR bringing them into a heel-stand before walking on/praising OR walking in the opposite direction before doing an about-face and walking on/praising... I'm not sure which of these I should be doing or if I need to just pick one!

    Hi! We love your videos, these are by far the best we've found. Keep them coming! :)
    We're about to bring home our 8 week old puppy and we have a question about potty training her. She's already received her second vaccination and deworming. We live in a high-rise in Asia where the streets are a little dirty, so we were wondering if we can take her out onto the street for potty training or start with the parking lot in our building first?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a pickle, for sure. Depending on the vaccination schedule there, you may want to wait. Here in the States, I'd at least wait in the context until the second shot which is around 12 weeks. It's not ideal to forestall potty that late, but anytime you have to use an area with lots of traffic then pathogen control becomes stupendously more critical. If the parking lot is cleaner, with less traffic (of both human and animal) that would be better, but be cautious nonetheless. Remember that potty training is not a walking exercise, so for the time being it's go out, stay in one spot, and either potty or leave and try again in a bit. Hope that helps!

    • @SuyashMahansaria
      @SuyashMahansaria 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, this was very helpful! I think we’ll take her out on the streets at 12 weeks and see how it goes.

      K Sosa so. Yea, that’s just puppies apparently. My dog is now a bit over a year old and she eats every meal. The key is consistency with a regular routine and don’t give them any other options. Present it at the same time every meal, allow them 10 to start eating. If they pass on the meal, take it away until next feeding. Don’t keep switching up the food or they will expect it. That’s what worked for me. And she grew to be a strong healthy dog.

    I just have one question I can't find any tips on the internet: I don't know why but my puppy (13 weeks old) doesn't want to potty outside 😄 😭 I can go for 1 hour walks, he holds it literally until we get back inside. After we get in I promise you it won't take 5 minutes he instantly potties somewhere inside. I have a garden in which he loves to play and sleep, but he still will go inside the house to potty😂Don't know what to do 😭 do you have an idea?
    I already stopped counting how often I have to clean the floor 😅

      @SimpawticoDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alessandra. That's pretty common. The reason is because you're not actively potty training-i.e. giving instruction. You're just kind of letting it happen. Just because you're outside when it happens, or just because there are spots outside that your puppy likes has nothing to do with convincing them that going potty outside is better than going inside. Potty training isn't a problem for dogs because they're indifferent to where they go. It's a problem for humans and so you need to actively give instruction and coaching about it. Take a look at our Potty Training PDF on the website: www.simpawtico-training.com/learning/downloadables/

    Hey Ian! Hurairah here from Pakistan. Love your videos man, I'm learning a lot from them! . We have 2 fully grown bhakarwal dogs and 5 of their 3 month puppies. We live in a joint family so we have a couple of acres of land where we have mutliple animals and many people visit and work there on a daily basis. We have atleast 2 people taking care of the animals at all times. However we have trouble training our dogs. I wanted to ask how can you train multiple puppies together and that too outdoors. Outdoors has many distractions and indoors isnt an option since our elders dont allow the dogs inside. Please note we dont have pet stores in my city and dog food isnt sold here either. So what should be the best diet for our dogs and which treats should we use using training(they'll have to be made at home). Thank you for how much you're helping dogs and their guardians. May you excel!

    I have a questions based on this info. How do you reliably determine the amount of time to wait for feedback? For example, let's say your dog brings a toy to you, drops it on the floor and then barks at you. You correct the behavior because you don't want your dog barking at you and demanding play. You wait a moment, the dog isn't barking you praise and throw the toy. How do you determine that you aren't actually reinforcing the behavior of "drop the toy, bark, wait a moment, toy gets thrown." I imagine dog recall is different per dog, but is there a good way to determine the threshold of time that should occur between these events? I'm concerned about how deep the chain of events goes if you get the timing of praise wrong.

    Y'know, I do really love your videos, i have used sooooo many of your tips for my puppy, but just to give some constructive criticism I have found that sometimes I as dog trainer can feel a little judged when you say things like "That ridiculous knee-in-the-chest thing". Its clear you are a positive only trainer and that's great!! I personally believe positive only training should be your first choice if trainer. However, i work in the aggrsive rehabilitation side of dog behavior training, and I myself am a balanced trainer. Sometime that so called ridiculous knee-in-the-chest thing is all that keeps that large mastiff from fully attacking me when they catch me off guard. All I'm saying is; it may not work for you but that doesn't mean it doesn't work.
    Anyways, sorry for the rant. Keep up the good work!! Loved the video as usual 👍🏼🧡

      Hi Athena! I think we're probably more on the same page than you might think. That comment I made in the video (and I'm sorry for not giving more context IN the video) is really aimed towards those situations where people are using the knee as their main and, in many cases, ONLY long term solution in place for jumping-and it just doesn't work. In the context you're describing-YEAH for sure it's called for. That's not a training technique, that's a "Keep myself safe" technique. Those times when the shit hits the fan aren't training time. It's do what's necessary to keep yourself and everyone safe time. I get it. I've done it myself at the shelter with aggressive or just overstimulated, strong dogs. Hell, for those of us that work with aggressive or untrained dogs-especially when they're mentally and physically strong, you do sometimes have to reach deeper into the bag and do things that might not be "ideal training," but it's what's necessary right then to control the situation. Truth be told, I probably lean more towards the balanced side of things, but I hate the labels since they don't really convey much outside of marketing terms. There are "balanced" people who are mega positive, and "positive" people I wouldn't let anywhere near one of my dogs. That's how it goes with anything, though, right? Anyways, I appreciate the work you do and I know it's tough in the trenches. I'm sorry you felt called out; I assure you that YOU were not one of those folks it was aimed at!

      @@SimpawticoDogTraining I cant remember the last time somebody was so understanding on this platform. The fact you are so educated in what you do and say restores the faith I have in this odd-ball community we call "the dog trainers". It makes my day to hear someone I look up to actually acknowledge balanced training in any context other then a negative one. I apologize for misunderstanding the context in which the comment was given, and after understanding why it was said I completely agree; that is not a viable technique to stop jumping long term. Also, thank you for having an appreciation for what I do. It gets tough at times, as I'm sure any dog training does, but it's always an adventure!! No two dogs are the same :)

    Due to the fact that Chihuahuas are an extremely common dog (I am thinking about getting one myself) would you mind creating a video that specifically targets some of the issues specific to chihuahuas? I'm sure that you would know more about what those specific issues would be than I would. I am very curious to see how to deal with such hyperactive puppies, and ones with such big personalities as chihuahuas.

      You have to start with an enzymatic cleaner to break down the organic material. Those are commercially available such as Nature's Miracle, Simple Solution, or Mr. Maxx Anti-Icky-Poo. You can follow that up with a disinfectant, if you want.

    Can you do a list of the top commands that you find beneficial and a rough order of how you would introduce them with a puppy?

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karen. I would say my top for a puppy (or any new dog for that matter) are: Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Leave It, Get Off, and Walking on Leash. I would say Sit and Leave It are #1 and #2 for a puppy. Get Off is probably going to be #3, Come and Walking are both important but take more time to develop, so those will kind of be concurrently running "side hustles." That's my 2¢. Hope it helps!

Also, we took on other projects (like the forthcoming Walking online course). The building is still ongoing, but at least the decks have cleared a bit and we can jump back into video production. I have about five in the queue I'm dying to get done!

    How do I handle a 53 pound 1 year old pittie mix jumping and biting when I take her out to potty in the yard? We work on things in the house but she goes over threshold almost immediately when we step out into the yard or onto walks. She was a stray 3 months ago and we adopted her from the pound only 2.5 months ago. She used to just do zoomies in the yard but now she jumps and bites on me. Turning away or walking away does little, she keeps going. If I reach down to treat or pet her it sets her off again. What should I do? It hurts. She is very strong.
    Edit: we don’t have funds for a trainer.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining

      If you feel like a clicker would be easier for you to use as a terminal marker, than go for it! Keep in mind that you don't even need to use WORDS as markers. Some animal trainers just use sounds like "Ex" or "Dee."
      And, yes, hand signals are always a good go-to if verbal prompts might be more difficult.
      Good luck!

    Its hard to switch the attention to when they’re good vs bad for example, my 3 month old puppy chews on the rug, if I just ignore it he’ll rip it apart. Right now, I try to distract him to chew a toy instead and when he doesn’t respond I get mad and then he starts getting over excited and bites because he thinks I’m playing with him. I don’t think my puppy can tell when I’m upset or when I’m happy. So even if I do praise him i don’t think he gets that I’m happy. He’s a beagle pointer mix and is really motivated by his nose so he has a short attention span, smell trumps noise and it’s so hard to grab his attention. Any tips? I need help 😭

    We have a question - we're working with our 14-week old Great Pyrenees pup, who is truly a good dog most of the time. We're seeing that the 'ouch that hurts!" does indeed work during the day but at night he bites harder and longer and has now broken the skin on each of our hands (not badly). Do we continue the same way regardless? ......we have good insurance....but we're also both 66 and this gets pretty dang ouchy. Just want to make sure we're doing the right thing. He gets praise INSTANTLY then we get bandaids.

    • @SimpawticoDogTraining
      @SimpawticoDogTraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laurie. Yes, ideally you work the same way. However, since you know nighttime is the "witching hour" you might want to limit the hands-on interaction for the time being until your puppy is a little further along. So, either be less hands-on, bail out quicker than you would during the day, or wear gardening gloves (which I've had a few of my older students use). It's ok to just use nighttime for chew toys or tug toys and fewer cuddles until that bitey phase is over. Good luck!
