Fast food, Fat profits: Obesity in America | Fault Lines

  • Obesity in America has reached a crisis point. Two out of every three Americans are overweight, and one out of every three is obese. One in three is expected to have diabetes by 2050.
Minorities have been even more profoundly affected. African-Americans have a 50 per cent higher prevalence of obesity and Hispanics 25 per cent higher when compared with whites.
How did the situation get so out of hand?
In this week's episode of Fault Lines, Josh Rushing explores the world of cheap food for Americans living at the margins.
What opportunities do people have to eat healthy? Who is responsible for food deserts and processed food in American schools?
Fault Lines finds food revolutions taking place and speaks with the people that are fighting back.
People featured in this film: Marion Nestle, Marlene Schwartz, John Bode, Nelson Eusebio, J. Justin Wilson, Dr. Olajide Williams, Lauren Von Der Pool, Julie Paradis, Cathal Armstrong, Ed Bruske,

What's wrong with drinking WATER with your meal? I'm from Canada, everywhere I go in America, people are always drinking sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and iced tea with their meals in restaurants. I rarely see people drink water with their meals. That would be a good start!

I think they may be shamed for asking for something that is free or very cheap. It happens here in Brazil. The more you spend the better it is to show off, even if you barely have money to pay your bills.

Today the newest trend is to say someone is " Thick, " not fat! No mater how overweight someone is, they are not considered fat these days. The reason is not to offend by using the word fat. The reason it's wrong, is because the extra weight will cause serious health issues, that drive up the cost of healthcare for everyone

The Burger King down the street from me is selling $5 meals - you get a burger, fries, nuggets, AND a drink. It would have saved me $10 to eat 3 fast food meals plus my homemade meals didn't include the drink, and I had to spend time (and electricity and water) prepping and cleaning up.

Congrats on turning it around. You did not choose excuses and took responsibility for your life. The diet doesn’t have to be repetitive and boring. You can eat cheap, healthy, tasty food. I never understand how Americans like to think healthy food equal expensive and not tasty. I would like to add more on the healthy food options.
Low good carbs: sweet potatoes, pumpkin, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, brown rice noodles.
Protein: meat, fishes, shrimps, tofu, beans, eggs.
Fiber: any type of veggies. Just visit an Asian grocery store, you guys will see how many options you could have.
Good fats: almonds, nuts and seeds, greek yogurt, nut butter, avocado, cheese.
The easiest way to make any food taste better is adding some low sodium soy sauce or mushroom seasoning. American cuisine like to use only salt to season and it’s why lots of people have high blood pressure and diabetes at the same time.

Surprised to be charged more on a bottle of water than a bottle of soda when I was in the US. It made me realise how the mindset towards food is vastly different than where I come from. I probably spent a lot more on water while I was there but I have no regrets.
IMO, its how the culture is shaped - they are brought up on "convenient" so fast food or anything that cut short the processes is the ultimate option. My US friends are very car-centric culture and hated walking anything more than 500m, while I'm just so used to walking everywhere - if its within 2km, I just put on my headphones and walk there. If they can take their car or the public transportation, they would (I digress on walking-centric cities tho like NY). But overall, I just told them they could increase their daily exercises by walking where they need to be. A few friends take me up on that and saw their weight dropping just by walking to shops, to their office, or just walking at the park leisurely in the morning/evening.

That's the only reason I enjoy being in a downtown area - everything is within walking distance. Unfortunately I actually live in a small town. You have to drive 15 minutes minimum to get to most businesses, so walking there and back would take hours. A lot of the U.S. is set up like that - where we rely heavily on highways to get us where we need to go, so we get used to the cars because they're necessary in most areas. There's a TON of rural places here, even though the media likes to focus on big cities.
But when I do get the chance, I love to find a downtown area, park my car, and walk to the multitude of shops for about an hour or so.

I remember having my first fast food experience after I graduated college and moved to the big city. So growing up, fast food for us was a luxury, and we only drank soda if there was a celebration. random fun times, yes!!! This this this!!! People really need to do their research on certain foods and their different addictive qualities. This stuff is not made up, there's been studies done on mice that actually have proven sugar to be equivalent to COCAINE in the way it chemically reacts in your brain, it is EXTREMELY addictive. Also cheese! Cheese is in so much of our food and a lot can't live without it because of the casomorphine! Which is also an addictive substance, it's made to be that way to keep the baby cows drinking the milk to grow, so when we eat it it has the same effect and we want more and more. There's so much people are kept ignorant of, but you just need to do your own research, this stuff is seriously addictive and there are food scientists who study this stuff and figure out which foods to market the most because their the most addictive, that's why dairy products are in majority of foods as well as sugar!!! So until we treat obese people as drug addicts which is really what they are, we will never get to the meat and potatoes of this issue, haha, see what I did?

When I told my best friend about this, she got offended that a doctor should not say stuff like that. Huh? I am happy he pointed it out, I feel like he cares and he gave me good tips.
