- Materials Used;
Hook, Kamasan B170 size 10 or any good dry fly hook.
Thread, Uni Black or Grey 8/0
Tail, Pintail or Grizzle Fibres and Natural Pheasant,
Rib Stripped and Dyed Yellow Peacock Quill
Body, Mole Fur
Hackles, Grizzle and Natural Red Cock Saddle
Wing, Mallard Body Feathers
Beautiful classic fly! I never would've thought to tie in the wings that way with the quills split and pulled back under the shank. That's a brilliant method. Only you Davie!

Wonderful fly, Davie. I really like the idea of using the mallard instead of hen feathers for the wings.
A nice looking fly pattern and really good instruction for the wings, don't know how it would look after a few casts.

Brilliant fly Davie. It won't replace your detached body mayfly as my goto fly for the drake hatch here in PA but it certainly will be a backup.

Oh thank you so much Davie! I have a gallon bag of mallard breast feathers that I was going to use for the wing case on Zug Bugs and I thought of fan wings also but no way I thought of tying them in like you just did. You always say to think of the taper and it was brilliant how you did it with this and All the patterns you tie! Plus all the tips you give to tie the parts in other ways for different effects. The only concern I have is do the fan wings cause tippet twist when casting? I've never fished them before but they look like they would have a gentle landing on the water and would provide an excellent profile to the fish. I'm really grateful for all your kind comments about my flies and methods used so a big thank you for them...The fanning flies I tye are for friends that live and fish in Ireland and they use them on the loughs mostly on a cast with other flies and they never really have any problems but I have fished smaller patterns like this and they will twist the cast so Ill use a stiffer and heavier cast and tippet as this will help stop this...

I have caught trout on flies of this nature. It seems the wetter they get the better they fish as they drift in the water's film.
I need a break from studying for final exams. I think I'll go tie some of these and put them beside those Welsh Thunders to try on opening day.

Lovely fly Davie! It's so pretty I'd almost be afraid to fish with it. Would you still get decent flotation if you clipped the hackle barbs under the shank so the fly sits more in the surface film?
Could Wood Duck be used for the wings?

hard to source good colour/marked feathers as theres no shops near me i have to buy online unseen.
have you tried a small bit of floo gloo near the tips to hold together?

In the river were i go to fish there aren't this insects , do you know the Sesia river , in The nord of the Italy ? it's very famous !
excellent looking fly davie. would that work on the stillwaters and lochs here in scotland. also is that bronze mallard you use for the fan wings.

Have you head of Nano Silk from Semperfli? Aparently its 12/0 size so you can tie on a size 32 hook but still have the strength to bend a size 6 hook in the vice.... Ill be getting a spool or 3 when im at the Angling Center next time.

Hi, I have to agree with you that the tail fibres are not the strongest fibre to use for a dry fly but they do catch fish for the friends that I now that fish them...I would like to wish you a Happy New Year and all the very best for 2019...

hi. sorry i ask, but how do you keep the fibers on the wing together? when i tye it in they look good, but when the fly is done the wing look like a battlefield :)

Hi Davie, I have a question for you. When I try and fish with winged dries like the adams my leader gets all twisted up after only 3 or 4 casts. Can you tell me why that is? I'm I doing something wrong? It only happens with flies that have posts or big wings. Thanks..

I would try a stiffer nylon or what I like to use is tapered leaders which will help stop it twisting though it will come down to the size of the fly as I also add on a tippet to the end of the tapered leader for the picky fish..I hope this helps you and let me know how you get on..

Thank you...I do use a tapered leader but maybe I'll try using heavier tippet like a 4x or 3x. I'll see if that helps.
