Living Inside New York’s WORST Apartment…

  • Words cannot describe what living in a place like this is actually like. New York City takes a lot out of you, and when you consider the prices of apartments like this, it might seem like living here is near-impossible. Good thing the landlord plans to renovate.

When the fridge doesn’t open completely you can’t get the drawers to pull out completely, which could make it so you can’t get to all your food. But also it means you can’t properly cleanly your fridge cause you can’t take the drawers out to clean under them or even all the way in them. That’s a problem. I live in a nice building, since I'm on Ontario Disability, I have RGI. When I moved in, the water in the tub wasn't draining properly and I ended up with fungal infections on both ankles and feet. It took the admin in the building about 2 weeks to get it sorted out. I have 2 things against me here. I'm not French (I live in a building that used to be exclusively for French speaking ppl) plus I'm one of about a dozen apartments who are reserved for RGI tenants. Ugh. I grew up in a place that is predominantly French and could speak it quite well. Moved away at 12 and really didn't have an opportunity to speak French, so 40 years later, I'm lost. I can understand my fair share, but I don't let on because I love it when ppl are talking about me, specifically the way I dress; I'm not into senior fashion at all. 😅

For $2,800 you get a 5th-floor walkup - better, but both places are tired, abused and gross. Charles to the rescue! For $4,450 you get an oddball layout but lots of space, a communal courtyard and two bathrooms. For $5,250 you get large rooms, great kitchen and a view, clean but pricey! I thought the 4450 apartment was nice and it had the courtyard even though it's shared. There's a lot of room to move around. The first 2 apartments are a hot mess and the 4 th. is so expensive .

o.m.g. That first apartment! How to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That 'Do not Enter' sign should be paid attention to. Hey, Cash, I know you're boundlessly optimistic, but, I just don't think so: kitchen: no counter space, fridge, stove, sink, just the basics, no sink sprayer, down-at-the-heel appliances. A mattress up in the grungy loft space where you can't even stand up? The toilet lid on the floor adds a certain je ne sai quoi! Oh, goody, a creepy basement space with a door leading out to wherever the serial killer is lurking! Apartment #2: Packages tossed down a flight of stairs, Sign: 'Danger Hazardous Voltage Can Cause Death' , lovely view of the bathroom from the kitchen with it's beaten up cabinets, bugs come as an extra feature, don't you love it when the door hits the bathtub? Are there enough red flags yet? Apt. #3 is over the top & at $4,450.00, I suppose it's a bargain of some sort.. but it's been badly renovated and re-configured, despite it's double height it's so chopped up there's actually very little usable living space! Charles quote of the day re: the fridge: 'it clears enough!' Apt. #4 : strangely configured living-room, kitchen is nice but must it be squashed in a closet-like space? For $5,250.00 I want less chintzy closet doors! And finally, Apt. #5 : $8,900.00 for this luxury unit, + electricity, + utilities, nice features and finishes, laundry?, but why must it be so generic? Sleepless in Toronto

I know everyone thought the first apartment was awful but if it was cleaned up and a couple things fixed I’d say it was so unusual that I’d love it. Also, your bedroom goes to the laundry room and I like that too!
Charles apartments were the best though and it’s a huge plus if your landlord is a good one! It means he listens to your issues and fixes things when they break! I’m glad I live in a city where I don’t have to worry about whether my appliances can fully open up and be cleaned! I wonder how Charles cleaning people cleaned that drawer in the fridge!
