So I guess my 60 year old Garcia Conlon rod is now back in style. Ya know what they say everything comes back into style eventually. Yes my rod is an 8 weight. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Many a happy day with my conlon live fibre.l snapped the handle mid way then it creaked when repaired but still worked well.l had to take a chance or go into the foaming deep and l don’t swim.Perhaps we should go for a walk again the rod and l.
one of the first fly rods I had was a Fenwick fiberglass. Nothing but good memories. Good action and it caught a bunch of trout and bass. I gave it to my son and I wish I had it back.
I love my classic Fenwick glass rods. And the blanks made by Steffen are awesome as well. I like the fact that glass is so easy to pair with the right line to match your fishing situation. They load great at close range too. Also, my Fenwicks can cast lines above and below their line weight rating. I like to make them faster and increase the line speed by underlining them by a full line weight. For example my FF75 rated as a 6 weight will cast a 4 wt. MPX or a 5 wt. Rio Gold with authority. Also glass gives you more bend with small fish. The Fenwicks can still be found on the auction site. And, at least for the first-generation Fenwick rods, you get what I think is the most comfortable cork grip ever made, nice beefy diameter with the thickest part in the front half and a significant amount of swelling to support your palm. Thanks for showing the Echo, I would need to feel the grip first before trying one, cork grip design on fly rods have gone down hill in recent years.
Glad you made this. I got back into fiberglass last year. Purchased a 3wt for panfish. I enjoyed it so much I got a 8wt Orvis for some bass, carp, and Texas Salt. I will say, I'm getting old amd the extra weight on the 8wt bothers me some. I don't recall ever complaining about the weight of a 8wt before... But, they are excepent fun.
I've been fishing S-glass rods for several years. Love them. From a little 3wt to a big 10wt they just fit my casting style. I have an CTS 6wt that I love to use for redfish here in Texas. I also have a nice NFC 4wt for river fishing.
I picked up a glass rod a couple of years ago. It feels different, not bad, just different. You can tell that it loads differently, but is just as smooth as a lake surface just before dawn. I use it pretty much for dry flies that need just that light touch.
I have a Cabelas Classic Glass Rod, my first rod ever, I also have a Redington ButterStick V3 and it is AWESOME! It’s all I use in Colorado. I can not wait to get my hands on the Orvis Glass this year. Early Christmas present for me! Love and appreciate your content, great video!
Been fishing some Swift Epic glass rods I built from their kits for years. Have been my favorite rods to fish. I am amazed at the capabilities of the Epic 476 to show finesse on small mountain streams and to land massive steelhead without breaking a sweat. Just completed an Epic 888 recently but have yet to fish. It has the similar blue coloring to the Echo BAG. Just mesmerizing. I am curious to fish one of these Echo BAG rods, they look awesome.
I have a TFO finesse glass, 7'6" 3 piece, that I picked up about 7 years ago on sale and it is my favorite rod. I tend to fish it only on small streams, but I adore everything about it.
Thank you flip. I have been recommending glass rods to all newbies because they are far more durable and forgiving. Of course i have been ignored but that is ok by me. I still use some of my old vintage stuff and yes it is heavy by todays standard. I also use new glass for my warm water small gills and smb. Long live glass and slower rods.
@@Madriveroutfitters read thru the forums and see how many rods get broken and warranties are supported. Glass rods are far less prone to getting broken especially by newbie mistakes.

I dont understand why as I hVe been ff for 60 yr and have personally never broken a rod. A small handling knick can lead to a catastrophic failure with a graphite rod where a glass will not fail in the same conditions.
I fish an Epic 6 a lot down here in Florida. Have always wondered about the BAG's but no one ever talks about them! Until now. Looking forward to watching them in action!
Love my 8wt glass rod wherever I go. Took it out to Nipigon for coaster brook trout and it was a blast. Hooking up on Lakers, big coaster brooks, and once in a while a big pike. It was fun watching the rod bend over.
I love my glass rods. Mine aren't fly rods, but bait finesse. I have a Daiwa Silver Creek Glass Progressive, a Major Craft Finetail Stream Glass, and a couple from Shane Gray, owner of Graywolf. Shane bought Steffen a few years back and builds his blanks on Steffen mandrels.
Great video, listening to Flip on the bending of a Glass Rod when fishing. I fish an Epic 12wt rod from New Zealand and fish Tarpon with it and have No Fear of rod breaking with a Big Tarpon, not like the Fear with Carbon.
I want to hear (and see more) about this place in Montana. Small rod and dry flies is my favourite. If you ever make it to Austria let me know I’ll put you onto some European Alpine streams for brown, brook (char) and rainbow trout as well as grayling.
I love my Echo BAG Quickshot. I can’t cast a long way with it, but it’s fun and I don’t have to worry as much about the rod. There’s a tool for every situation. Recently fishing off jetties in Florida, I wish I had an ultra stiff rod to get some distance into the wind. My mangrove coast did good enough though.
I have an old Eagle Claw glass 7wt rod I got from my grandather, and a South Bend bamboo rod from my wife’s grandfather. The bamboo rod is HEAVY! It almost loads itself from inertia but casts smoothly, whereas my glass rod is slightly lighter but is slightly harder to cast.
I purchased my first BAG when it first hit the market, Overloaded it one step up with Rio Outbound Short and it was (and still is) ideal for casting to snook under mangroves and at redfish on the GA Coast where short fast casts are needed in those creeks. I have a number of BAGs in my arsenal. I would love to see them make a BAG Spey rod, that would be interesting.
CTS and NFC,the latter being a G Loomis company, make some nice heavier weight glass rod blanks up to 12wts (I believe Echo's are made by CTS),fun rods for such "heavy" rods,the CTS 8',10 wt is my new fav for SMB and pike, you can throw a multiple of line weights well on the same rod too w/ glass,love them for sinking lines where you need to slow your stroke

Yes! I own a Moonshine I think 3wt, Redington Butterstick and an Echo 7wt BAG. Yes. It is! Last month I caught an 18-1/2” rainbow. WOW what blast and the rod acted like it’s nooo problem
I have an amber coloured one, not sure of the brand, bought here in the UK. As a boy fibreglass was coming of age and replacing split cane, absolutely bomb proof in my experience. Mine is a 5wt and I fish mainly for course fish like Chub and Rudd with mine. I find it casts fine. I do have an Orvis 5wt graphite rod too but I'm just as likely to use the glass rod on most occasions. I think the aesthetics are good, I love the translucent colours and that light blue rod looks epic
I just picked up an 8' 6wt Shimano Aeroglas fly rod. I wound up overweighting it by 1 with some SA Amplitude WF7F. It just hucks the big fluffy dries out there 70-80' on the bigger rivers easy. Cant wait to try setting it up as a single hand spey. But, in reallity i'm torn between my 8.5' 5wt Foster Bros. cane and Scott 4wt glass. fishing these supple, slow rods for trout on small streams is just so much fun...
When I first started indicator fishing for steelhead in winter I took my old Fenwick 9 ft 8wt and and put a DT 8 F on it for roll casting. Then a guy showed me the single hand spey. Wide loop throws an ind rig very, very well.
I am a dedicated glass fanatic. My only carbon rod is a 10wt redington vapen. I have the BAG in 7 wt, butterstick in 4wt, and superfine glass in both a 2 and a 6wt. The suerfine 6 is my go to for 90 percent of my fishing. I love when flip says "you just have to adjust your mindset to glass" which is 100 percent true. If you let the rod do the work itll do it. Ive casted my 4 wt and 6 in some pretty heavy wind and if you trust what the rod can do you'll be surprised. Ive heard some say glass is easier but i disagree, if you give a spin fisherman a carbon rod and a glass rod id bet hed be able to cast the carbon better. Glass demands accurate timing. If not you wind up with a pile of spaghetti 4 feet in front of you.
@@Madriveroutfitters I think the advantage of glass is that I can hit a local lake and catch a crappie and it would be just as entertaining as a 2 -3 lb bass with the glass 6 wt. The slower cadence of the stroke is like zen as well. I often joke and say Carbon rods are like kung fu. Fiberglass is like tai chi.
I have a 3 piece browning silaflex magnum from 1964 in mint condition it casts beautifully but it's heavy it has an 18" piece that you can leave out to turn it into a 5 weight or leave in for a 6-7
Would you say that an 8wt badass glass would be suited for striper fishing from boat? Would be my first glass rod, looks like a lot of fun. Most of my graphite rods are super fast and lack feel

Brian, I’m headed to NOLA in a few weeks as well to chase big red fish. You mention you are bringing an 8wt. Question, why not the 10wt? Smaller flies and floating line allowing you to stay with the lighter rod? I’d love to fish smallmouth with it as well at home in Missouri. Is the 8wt too heavy? We typically use intermediate lines for smallies. Thanks! And great video.

i got 3 glass rods 2 2wt and a 3wt. I had a 2wt graphite and just didn't like it at all way to fast. but the glass rods are great I do lots of extreme bushwhacking to get to some of the places I go fishing full on machete for 3 to 4 hrs . I tell you this I would have broken a few graphite rods this year alone and the glass rod lives for next season
I like click too, but for different reasons. First, I like to be able to change my drag pressure quickly and easily, which my palm allows me to do. Secondly, they're just fun
Any word on the echo boost blue fly rod? It's 150$ cheaper than the tfo equivalent a2x and I'd need to see a significant difference before buying the tfo

Boron is dangerous stuff for employees who have to work with it. A splinter of that stuff and go right through a person with ease. That's why Fenwick stopped messing with it when they were still making stuff in the U.S.A.
@@Madriveroutfitters Seems like it. Being Debby Downer like this wouldn’t happen face-to-face but something about social media makes it seductive, attracting social outcasts. FWIW, my first flyrod was an Eagle Claw Featherweight…that wasn’t featherweight! Because I learned on it over 50 years ago, I can still sling that baby despite its many performance drawbacks. By comparison, Echo B.A.G. rods are light, sensitive, and powerful. Oh, and they are also BEAUTIFUL! 😂
Man, Flip could make a several hours long video about eating a gas station chili dog and I’d listen to the whole thing without skipping a single word. And I hate chili. What a great storyteller.
Funny, the glass Hardy rods from 70's are some of the fastest glass tapers around - still today. That's the case for rods below 9' in length. Go to the longer, wet fly action rods and that's another story. But yes, compared to carbon rods glass will always be heavier. The only shortcoming of the old Hardys is that they are predominantly two piece and could use one or two extra guides.
I won’t buy an echo, regardless of how great the blank tapers are, simply because of how ugly they are. I will never understand how people can spend so much time making a product that functions extremely well, but then totally fall flat on the aesthetic aspect of said product. Come on Tim!
@@rons3507 lol it’s a product, not someone’s feelings. We need to push the manufacturers to do better. Look at any Scott, Winston, orvis, sage, etc and then look at any echo and tell me they aren’t ugly.
Thanks for the advice Willy! My comment was tongue in cheek but I do believe graphite to be superior to glass in any scenario. People like driving model Ts and casting bamboo rods. That’s fine but don’t make the argument that this preference is based on performance and not nostalgia.

Awesome rod, I love mine, I’ve caught many bonefish and cuda on my 9wt. The BAG QS is my go to rod for the mentioned species.

Brian, I’m headed to NOLA in a few weeks as well to chase big red fish. You mention you are bringing an 8wt. Question, why not the 10wt? Smaller flies and floating line allowing you to stay with the lighter rod? I’d love to fish smallmouth with it as well at home in Missouri. Is the 8wt too heavy? We typically use intermediate lines for smallies. Thanks! And great video.

i got 3 glass rods 2 2wt and a 3wt. I had a 2wt graphite and just didn't like it at all way to fast. but the glass rods are great I do lots of extreme bushwhacking to get to some of the places I go fishing full on machete for 3 to 4 hrs . I tell you this I would have broken a few graphite rods this year alone and the glass rod lives for next season

Is the grip on the 5wt B.A.G. the same as the grip on the 6wt in the same series?
Just looked at our website and the grips are all the same in the pictures. Might confirm with the shop though but appears the answer is yes.
I fished click and pawl in salt for a couple decades, landing hundreds of stripers, blues, and bones. I still prefer a click reel.
I like click too, but for different reasons. First, I like to be able to change my drag pressure quickly and easily, which my palm allows me to do. Secondly, they're just fun

Any word on the echo boost blue fly rod? It's 150$ cheaper than the tfo equivalent a2x and I'd need to see a significant difference before buying the tfo

Boron is dangerous stuff for employees who have to work with it. A splinter of that stuff and go right through a person with ease. That's why Fenwick stopped messing with it when they were still making stuff in the U.S.A.

Fibreglass has its place. Once you get any wind it is way inferior for punching through wind or accuracy.

@@Madriveroutfitters Seems like it. Being Debby Downer like this wouldn’t happen face-to-face but something about social media makes it seductive, attracting social outcasts. FWIW, my first flyrod was an Eagle Claw Featherweight…that wasn’t featherweight! Because I learned on it over 50 years ago, I can still sling that baby despite its many performance drawbacks. By comparison, Echo B.A.G. rods are light, sensitive, and powerful. Oh, and they are also BEAUTIFUL! 😂

Yeah I don’t think it’s for me… The glass I have in Hardy… bulky, heavy & sllllooooowwwww… I prefer my bamboo for that slow relaxed casting.

Funny, the glass Hardy rods from 70's are some of the fastest glass tapers around - still today. That's the case for rods below 9' in length. Go to the longer, wet fly action rods and that's another story. But yes, compared to carbon rods glass will always be heavier. The only shortcoming of the old Hardys is that they are predominantly two piece and could use one or two extra guides.

I won’t buy an echo, regardless of how great the blank tapers are, simply because of how ugly they are. I will never understand how people can spend so much time making a product that functions extremely well, but then totally fall flat on the aesthetic aspect of said product. Come on Tim!

I think the river glass, especially the amber, is beautiful.

@@rons3507 lol it’s a product, not someone’s feelings. We need to push the manufacturers to do better. Look at any Scott, Winston, orvis, sage, etc and then look at any echo and tell me they aren’t ugly.

Thanks for the advice Willy! My comment was tongue in cheek but I do believe graphite to be superior to glass in any scenario. People like driving model Ts and casting bamboo rods. That’s fine but don’t make the argument that this preference is based on performance and not nostalgia.
