Years ago, when I was around 12, my parents were at a party and chatting with another couple they hadn't met before. The conversation turned to children, and my mother was doing a little bit of proud bragging about my being a good celloist. Turns out they were talking to Mr. Ma's parents. lol

I will be forever grateful for my high school boyfriend, Eric. He was a cellist, and he introduced me to the music of Yo-Yo Ma. After high school, another friend and I went to a dress rehearsal at Abravenal Hall in Salt Lake City, and I got to meet Yo-Yo before he performed with the Utah Symphony. The picture I took did not turn out well, but I treasure it - always - based on the memory of meeting the most personable and skilled cellist this world might ever know.

For anyone wondering, Yo-Yo is playing on his Stradivarius, the same one that was played by Jaqueline Du Pre. In his similar performance on presidential inauguration video, he is playing on his Montagnana (a wider cello with more bass-like qualities). These are his 2 main cellos he plays on. He also has 2 modern cellos.

If you liked it, listen to the original, Dvorak Symphony #9 2nd movement (here referenced as "Going Home", which is just lyrics which were later added to the original). It's a very emotional piece. The "Celibidache, Münchner Philharmoniker, 1991" version on youtube is especially nice. It's always been a favourite of mine, but now it conjures up more emotions than it ever used to for me.

My mom, sister, and I saw him perform at University of Wisconsin - Parkside in the late '70s. I really didn't want to go as the weather was crap and I didn't feel well. But my mom insisted that it was too important to miss. This was probably due to my sister playing the cello, and I played the violin. He's only ten years older than I am. Perhaps she was trying to give us inspiration. I only know that I'm glad I went and will never forget it. Sometimes now it still feels like I dreamt it.

This was so beautiful I watched it twice last night. Now I am back for another viewing. I want to know which trolls gave this a thumbs down?

I hope to one day be out of this pandemic to see Mr. Yo Yo Ma in concert. Truly an inspiration and his music is a shining light in these dark times ❤️
