As the Inquisition possesses neither formal hierarchy nor leadership, each Inquisitor is free to pursue the mission of Humanity's survival in the manner he or she believes most appropriate. Like-minded fellows gather together to investigate areas of mutual interest or concern, as bounded by one of the many Inquisitorial Ordos. Each Ordo waxes and wanes with the times, for many Inquisitors move freely between them according to where they judge the need to lie. The greater the level of daemonic activity, the larger the Ordo Malleus becomes; in times of heresy, the Ordo Hereticus grows to match the threat. An Ordo can lie fallow for years, existing only as a historical curio until its field of study becomes relevant once more. Such is the nature of the galaxy, however, that some perils -- specifically those posed by the Daemon, the alien and the heretic -- are ever-present. Accordingly, the Ordos dedicated to combating them -- the Ordo Malleus, the Ordo Xenos and the Ordo Hereticus -- are considered Ordos Majoris, for their vigil is never-ending. In Space Marine game the Inquisitor did not fall to chaos, he was killed and the body was possessed. The demon inside even taunted the game character that they consider him a traitor, not realizing they were talking to a corpse for so long, even noticing he does not bleed and stuff.
That's a distinction without a difference though, at least as it matters in this context because he still had the unlimited authority of an inquisitor and the ability to cause havoc using it.

@@doomguy9049 What drugs are you on? If you were killed and then some demon used your body as a puppet to do terrible things, then are you to blame for it? The Inquisitor, through the audio logs you can recover, clearly did his best to stop the mistake he caused and even gave his life in an attempt to halt it. He died, though, and his carcass was used as a weapon.
The damage caused was done by Chaos. The authority of the Inquisitor's body was just that: authority. He didn't do it willingly. he didn't fall to Chaos. He was no traitor. He was a scientist who bit more than he could chew and in the end Chaos took that chance to spread. In this case, the Inquisitor is only at fault for running his experiments without proper care. Even Neroth, the Chaos Lord, admits to this fact and says that the Inquisitor had been dead long before Titus met him and that it was nothing more than a flesh puppet.

An inquisitor has definitely fallen to chaos before. one of them basically caused a civil war between two factions of the blood angels at one point because they'd secretly fallen to Tzeentch.
Inquisitor Ramius Stele (from Deus Encarmine and Deus Sanguinius). You can also count Gholic Ren-Sar Valinov (from Grey Knights) who plotted to bring back a demon prince in the materium. Those two are the first inquisitors I learned about when I started to read 40k novels. Since then I always see them as shady guys borderline chaos at best ^^.
Inquisitor Quickseus (it's pronounced like that at least) in the _Eisenhorn_ books also qualify.

This may be a joke, but Rogue Traders are known to double-check all the visible stars whenever they arrive in a new system just in case there's a star they can see from here that isn't on the star charts.

Eisenhorn was still able to use his rosette/seal after he was declared excommunicate traitoris, just as long as he avoided calling in the actual authorities, which the title character called him out on in Magos. In the Caiaphas Cain books Amberly's rosette is a normally invisible tattoo on her hand she can manually light up when she wants to be recognized as an inquisitor, I think.
The Ordo Obseletus part reminds me of fit Guilliman had with a Priest (I think it was in Plague wars) after said Priest tried to cover up a reckless attack by an untrained psyker he ordered as "a vessel for your fathers power" to put it simply Guilliman nearly smashed the priests skull before cooling down and the priest morbidly had fantasies about getting killed by one of the Emperors sons

Don't forget the part where Guilliman said he would have the priest shamed and the Custodian (who stayed in the room despite Guilliman ordering everyone to leave) straight up told the priest that he didn't take orders from Guilliman and if the priest ever tried something like that again, he'd kill him.
Frater Mathieu was the priest's name, I think. He was hired by Guilliman to be his orator because he seemed like the closest thing to a chill, reasonable person the Ecclesiarchy had.

Fun fact the novel about Jaq Draco was the first ever book of the 40k universe and is very weird and might not even be canon anymore. Because he somehow infiltrates the Imperial Palace and Big E senses him and freeze time to speak to him and probes his memory to see if he tell the truth. Andddd on top of that manages to escape the Palace without being noticed by any Custodes…

I like the idea of a bunch of Ordo Maldictum sitting in a meeting trying to brain storm how to close the giant hell portal and one (probably named Terry or Burt) keeps suggesting a giant tube of super glue, a giant staple gun, filling it with sand , or just putting traffic cones around it.

To know more about Cato Sicarius and why he's considered that in TTS, I like to refer to what I call "The Damnos incident". Officially called the Fall of Damnos, for which I cannot forgive the Ultramarysues as a Necron enjoyer. There's a short story called "Veil of Darkness" that looks through his eyes as he recovers, preparing for the counter attack, and boi his psyche is full of that text to speech sicarius energy.
To counter that I recommend the knights of macragge to show full blown PTSD riddles

Here's a fun fact, Sicarius has sworn that he and Farsight would duel again after Farsight's forces used an EMP to disable everyone's powered weapons and suits and the Space Marines were surrounded by the Kroot Auxiliaries under Farsight's command, who were equipped with standard swords.
Farsight and Cato had a back and forth in that about honor.

Funny that Shy and Bricky mentions how 40k could have a Mass Effect style game using an Inquisitor since the Spectres from Mass Effect are basically Mass Effect's equivalent of Inquisitors.
Also, as for a Mass Effect-like 40k game as a Rogue Trader, it would likely be more like Mass Effect Andromeda instead of the Shepard trilogy.

What you do is have it be more plot line like Mass Effect 2. You are a Rogue Trader plying the lanes of space in the Imperium when an Inquisitor and their retinue conscript you and your crew into ferrying them around and helping them deal with some sort of horrible problem for the Imperium. Something happens to the Inquisitor and now as the highest ranking Imperial presence on the ship your word is the law, although all the acolytes still with you are no doubt watching and reporting back to the Inquisition. You are forced to take up a cause you didn't even want at the behest of a shadowy conspiracy with near limitless resources.

For the time fuckery of the Warp, The First Heretic has a pretty good example, without many spoiler Argel Tal and his buddies go in there and are lost for 7 months, but for Lorgar and everyone else waiting for them was less than 5 seconds.

Fun fact: the Warp allowing both FTL and Time Travel is one of the few scientifically accurate things about Warhammer 40k. The reason is complicated, but it has to do with Relativity - the instant you let information propagate outside of a light cone, you have the potential for closed timelike curves - aka, time loops.
Ordo Chronos is basically the Dwemer from Elder Scrolls except in this case, some of them managed to return.
It honestly highly likely that they just time traveled into the future...like the whole ordo just went hundreds of years and they are NOW finally returning from their trip.

An example of an actual traitor inquisitor would be in the first book of Grey Knight's Alaric Triology, with an actual Tzeench worshiping ex-inquisitor that was being hunted down by his peers. The guy was very strong and summoned a very powerful Greater Daemon...... And did a lot of fucked up stuff.
Among his fuckery, he also used the Grey Knight secrecy against them and told the defenders of the world they were traitors, thus, the guard, the sisters and a FUCKING ORDINATUS PLATAFORM were used against the Knights.... But Alaric, being a badass, decided to be awesome that day one again, and plunged his wounded strike cruiser to shatter the hive cities lines, and then banished the greater peacook.....After one hell of a fight.

I play a lot of Tau and have quite a few models for my army and play pretty regularly. I was playing this weekend and I had a squad of fire warriors taking on a squad of grey knights and they were doing their best and finally got into melee and needless to say my single fire warrior was left after the fight and he was JUST A LITTLE GUY. Being an Inquisitor might be something I would do besides being a space marine in 40k. Unrestricted freedom and the ability to easily change what I want to do. It's a double edge sword but worth it

In the eisenhorn books an Inquisitor fell to chaos and was believed dead for three hundred years but in reality was using his inquisitorial seal to gain access to certain locations to perform a ritual for chaos
