  • Composer John Williams is one of America's most celebrated musical talents - the best-known creator of music for films. He has written the scores for such revered classics as "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Superman" and "Schindler's List," and is returning to the "Star Wars" universe with the upcoming "Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker." Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Williams, and with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who collaborated with the composer on a new album of works for violin and orchestra adapted from his film scores, "Across the Stars."

It took me forty years to understand fully what he was saying. John Williams has impacted the movie industry and therefore the world in great ways and he will go down in history as a person who made a difference. Something people don't get about musicians. I wrote one 7.5 minute piano piece technically in about 3 days, but I just kept listening to it for the next YEAR and making tweaks and changes here and there before I finally just told myself I needed to let it be. I'm still technically not satisfied with it. Hearing it reminds me of all that stress and all the things I would still change about it, it doesn't actually bring joy per se.
