  • Sedona 125 miles Ultra Marathon documentary - the longest Trail Running Race I've ever completed by a full marathon! It's the second half of Aravaipa Running's Cocodona 250 miles - going from Jerome to Flagstaff, passing through Sedona, Arizona.
    Curious about the trail running gear I use and recommend: check out this link

    Because this was my 18th 100 miler in the last 18 months (and 6th in the last 16 weeks) I came in with the mindset of taking it slow. This actually was not part of my racing schedule but I signed up last minute to tune up a few things before Badwater 135 in 10 weeks. I was hoping that a slow pace and eating a lot from the start would make for a (relatively) smooth sailing.
    Turns out, I was wrong! Well, halfway wrong. The night was terrible - I honestly can't remember struggling so much with sleep walking. Maybe it was the altitude, because I also experience vivid hallucinations, something that is new for me.
    But somehow, after a nap, I was able to turn things around. And from mile 80 to the end, I was running strong! Somehow, that was enough for a 4th male finish. But most importantly, that was a fun experience and a good preparation for Badwater 135 this summer.
    with the most gorgeous landscape near Zion. One of my favorite Trail Running Races, I'm back for a 3rd time at Zion Ultras 2023.
    Thanks for watching!

    Amazing job Simon. I admire your transparency and humility. You captured the experience very well. I ran Cocodona last year, and went through Sedona and Mt Elden at night. So it was a treat seeing them in the daylight through your video. Thank you.

      Live feed was so much fun with the running jokes! I had it in the background all day Mon/Tues. And, flipping through the feed afterwards trying to find any footage of me, I saw you gave me and Wes channel a shoutout! Thank you so much :)

And everyone needs a Nora in their life. Great video, as they all are!! Thank you for the inspiration you give... I literally volunteered to work the most remote aid station in my area's hardest 100 miler while watching this video! 😂 Check out the Jigger Johnson in NH, it's got 20,000 feet of elevation gain on some tough trails and is a UTMB qualifier!

      @runningwithsimon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I'll tell Nora - I totally agree!
      NH, would love to! Timing isn't great for this year (same time as Leadville) but some day maybe. It'd be a good excuse to go see the family on the East Coast! They say 32k ft for the 100 miles - that's pretty intense especially that these are east cost feet...!

    I admire your resilience and determination and am in awe when watching you pace yourself with great discipline. How long is "I took my sweet time at the aid station"? 2 minutes? 30?

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks :)
      When I say "I took my sweet time at the a/s" the meaning depends where in the race. If it's early in the race - I mean I took like about 2 min - maybe putting sunscreen, eating something solid and refilling. But if it's later in the race, like the one up top Elden at the end of the race, that's probably closer to 10-15min - where I sit down, eat something warm, take a breather. 30min is very rare, and that's only if I take a nap - which I try to mention usually

    Hey Simon. Thank you for inspiring me to sign up for next year's Sedona 125. I was wondering about the oxygen level for the second half of the race, considering you were traversing at 7K above sea level. Did not pose a challenge for you? Would it be a factor for someone that resides on sea level??

    • @runningwithsimon
      @runningwithsimon  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rafael! I actually live at sea level, and did not do any acclimation for either this or Cocodona 250 this year. I don't know how much it affected me when we're on the plateau at ~7k after Sedona itself. Maybe it affected - actually probably - but it's not as obvious. But I certainly felt it very clearly when climbing Elden. Out/short of breath. Getting really tired at the slightest uphill. So yes it's a factor - but I think the eat on the first day is an even bigger factor, and that's easier to prepare for. The altitude is tricky because the best thing to prepare for an altitude race (and really the only thing I ever do) is to go up there at altitude ahead of the race. But this early in the season, mountains are still covered in snow and mostly not accessible. But that's what I (try) to do for a race like Leadville where altitude is a huge factor
