    Your story reminded my own first mountain trail marathon in Mallorca this year. There were also 2 huge climbs with million of rocks and I also wasted too much energy at first half. Speaking about poles, I suggest to buy Salomon Custom quiver for carrying your poles. It was a game changer for me + you can put your 360 camera with pole in it. Super comfortable and that solution will save some space in your front pocket.

    "Man, this bit just sucks..just sucks for no reason.." We've all been there! Great video and you're one of very few people to ever mention the Hoka Stinson. I love them...have several pairs of the version 6....hoping the 7 feels as good. Thanks for sharing your race experience! 💪🏽

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      Hi! Man the Stinson is the most underrated Hoka shoe, it’s just so dope to do everything! The 7 is an upgrade but tbh the 6 for some things is better. The 6 is a bit more “minimal” and agile, the 7 is mega structured and is a “support shoe”. Currently I rotate between the 6 and the 7, both great!
      Thanks for the comment and happy training

    i'm the same on downhills, everyone passes me. I pass those same folks going up, and my flats are solid. Unfortunately, I've fallen too many times, and with injuries, to be able to improve my downhills. It is what it is, and I have to rely on other parts of the races.

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      Hey Rico! Thank you for the comment - by far for me the experience of being out in nature, getting fitter by smashing the uphills hard and trying to make it sustainable long term (so avoiding injuries like twisted ankles etc by taking risks on downhill) is way more important than any race result. Trail running really is an amazing sport, I’ll go slower if it means staying in the sport for longer 😃
      Happy training!

    Great Video and very informative.
    I am going to be doing a 33km in August (which for me is an ultra!) with 1950m of vertical and this will be very helpful in not making mistakes and preparing properly though I will probably skip the Orios.
    One question why were you eating what appeared to be a lot of rice cakes the evening before? Thank you.
    Michael

    Before my Ironman I crushed a massive box of rice crispies. Kinda like rice cakes but more junky.
    More carbs and had a ton of sodium too. Super easy to eat lots of it too

    What was the recovery time like after this??
    I was looking at doing a 50k at the start of the year before my triathlon season
    About 2 and a half months before one of my A races for the year!
    Great video and always lots of effort put into it!

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      Hey Joe! It depends on what your main focus is. If it’s Ironman, I would not recommend doing a 50k before the seasons starts simply for the HUGE risk of traumatic injury that would pull you out of important training for IM season. That is the biggest risk, we must come to terms with the fact that every footstep could potentially be a severely sprained ankle. A 50k after the Ironman season is over? That is a big YES, having all the fitness built on Ironman prep it will be an easy (well not really “easy” but doable) transition

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      Sorry didn’t answer the question: recovery was 3 days, and the Saturday after this I did a 200km gravel race coming in second place

    • @joehayes3081

      @@PatrickDelorenzi really good point, need to prioritise what’s important and that’s performing at 70.3 and full distance. Got a long race season next year so no time to fit a ultra in really 😂
      Only time I’ve done some kind of trail race I did like you said, rolled my ankle bad and pulled a tendon so not worth it!

  • @thepatternforms859

    Get a Garmin Enduro 2 it’s the best watch for ultra running… enduro 2 can run all the best features and multiband gps for 3 days! Never have to worry about charge ever! Race 100 and 200 milers easy on one charge

  • @lsantilli

    Honestly sure you bonked a little by the sounds of it - but you didn’t totally obliterate into failure. It sounds like you genuinely got through it and weren’t in danger of truly DNF territory. There is an ultra runner I know, that swears by a training method called “tread hill” running. Basically she turns the treadmill to 10-15%, runs just below threshold HR for 45 min-1.5 hrs. Don’t worry about the pace, just focus on the HR. She does this about twice a week, as the 2nd run of the day, on a after a long run day (so it’s in tired legs) She ran 2:53 marathon at 19, and just crushed me in 50k in 3:34. If I had a treadmill I would try it, but the Ironman budget is limiting haha.

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      This is a seriusly good training tip. Feels a bit like cycling uphill where you do efforts like that all the time on long climbs, low impact on the joints.. Will give it a go

  • @y3_38

    Usually during this kind of races you win by going super fast downhill, just let the legs go...
    Anyway it was also a good training, look it in this way
    By the way give it a try to a 50 km flat to see your time
