    Nice hike. Pretty out there. Got to wonder why the one guy chose to hike in denim pants and not have something dry to change into at camp. Brrrrr....

      I think he wonders that to. If he had to do it over again, he would probably make some changes

    Next time you are in a shelter make sure to sleep with your head away from the walls. Have your feet at the wall. Mice will normally run the walls. You’ll find less droppings on ya.

    • @justmitchell17
      @justmitchell17  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good advice 👍🏻 We had several mice come visit.
      The wind was still pouring in near our feet and would have been much more uncomfortable, even with the tarp.

      I did a section hike in Northern Virginia in March of 2019. Temps were mostly in the 30s during the day and into to 20s at night but I was ok. My pack weight was a tad high but I had what I needed to be comfortable under the conditions. Most night I had shelters to myself and no mice bothered me. Maybe they just didn't like me. ; )

    Mitchell here from SE Virginia. Will watch your hike. I am a army retired combat veteran of Vietnam x2, Desert Storm. I hiked 100 mile Nijmegen in Holland x4, 100 km French death march in 24 hours, and Bern Switzerland 80km in the alps many times. I feel your mind set is good. Wish I could do the Appalachian at age 70. I do hike daily 8 miles with a ruck. Keep in shape is key.

      Hey Pix Axe, don't write off hiking the trail just because you're 70. I have postponed my retirement and thru-hike for the last two years but will finally be done working in July of 2022. I am still planning to start my thru-hike in Feb of 2023 even thought I'll be 71. Don't give up!

    Nice job on the hike and the videography! I REALLY appreciate that your music was not blasting so loud to require dropping the volume by 50% like most hikers! It did look like a challenging hike. Do check out Scott Beneroffe he just finished Mt. Washington on his SOBO journey. Now that is crazy 🤪!

    Great video. It’s not easy camping in the cold let alone with 30 MPH winds blowing directly at you. We hiked and camped a part of the AT in PA last winter. Not nearly as wintry though. Thanks for sharing.

    All good but........how is filtering water a 2 man job? Besides that, I would definitely do a below zero hike. But it's better when it's 65 and sunny.......

    • @justmitchell17
      @justmitchell17  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The sawyer mini only has one threaded end. So my father was helping hold it still so we could filter water. One person can do it, it’s just easier with two.
      My preferred filter, which we didn’t have with us for the trip is the versaflow which is threaded on both ends and makes it much much easier for one person.

    Next time bring a giant tarp. Would’ve kept you much warmer ( I think 🤔)

    • @justmitchell17
      @justmitchell17  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It likely would have, but everything is a compromise. Giant tarps and ultralight backpacking don’t usually go together. Making do with less is part of the challenge.

      All things are relative. I’m from Florida lol
      But it was a pretty decent storm even for TN/NC. Trees down everywhere from heavy snow/wind. The county were were staying had residents without power for 5-7 days.

    I don't think I would be afraid of mice. It would be the human and animal ( bear and cougar ) predators I would be fearful of. And spiders.

    • @justmitchell17
      @justmitchell17  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not afraid of mice. I’m afraid of them eating a hole in my gear.
      As to the others, everyone has to deal with their own fears in their own way. Hiking with someone tends to help.
