  • IKEA BESTA HACK - Had an unusual amount of questions on what to buy/how to install our new TV console from IKEA, so put together this quick video explaining it. Sharing exactly what we ordered and how we installed our new TV Console.

    IKEA ORDER:
    1 - BESTÅ TV unit with doors: bit.ly/3j7RYDc
    1 - BESTÅ frame: bit.ly/3fpEb8B
    2 - LAPPVIKEN door/drawer front: bit.ly/2WB6rOn
    2 - BESTÅ soft closing/push-open hinge: bit.ly/38VlSFX
    *** correction from the video: we did not order any additional shelves, the original BESTA TV unit apparently comes with 3.

    I've seen this hack before, but no one has ever actually opened the cabinet doors and shown the nitty-gritty details of how they anchored the cabinets to the wall while still maintaining the illusion of the floating element. I love the way this hack turned out in your room. It's giving me so many ideas for my entertainment center needs. Thank you for sharing!

      I’m going to keep that bracket idea in mind. I hang TVs, pictures, mirrors, and art for a living and do TONS of furniture assembly as well. Occasionally I get asked to mount these to the walls and the last time I had to mount it off center because of those brackets not lining up with the studs.

    The reason IKEA doesn't take studs into consideration is because IKEA is a European brand, and in Europe they build walls out of bricks or concrete. Yes, wooden construction exists, of course, but even then the wall is stable and load-bearing. The whole drywall-where-to-hang-something problem simply doesn't exist for the vast majority of people. Your set up looks great!

      Not sure what you mean? Almost every house I lived in was brick & built around 1915 & the walls are all plaster- thick as hell. You can’t just drill into these walls either- the mail will fall out with crumbling wall. I’m assuming house in Europe are similar. Neither newer houses I lived in built in 1940s & 1960s were brick with no drywall & you MUST go into a stud or nothing will stay up

    • @k.anderson5039
      @k.anderson5039 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarahWisted Im not sure if what they said is accurate. I have never lived in a home in the US that had drywall- all were brick & built between 1910-1960. You can’t just hammer into plaster walls either as wall wi crumble unless you nail into stud. Having to find the stud & anchor is the main reason I don’t have anything heaving on my walls. You have to know what you are doing

    • @windybeach2184
      @windybeach2184 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brick walls are common in my part of Australia too. You can use masonry drill bits and wall plugs. We don’t just drill into the plaster 😅

    Was going to do the same with my ikea frame soon! But if I could recommend, upgrading to a few sets of steel L brackets, those smaller L brackets are for shelves, and are known to bend with too much weight. Won’t notice immediately, but over time the whole piece could sag with too much in the drawers. This looks so good though! A lot like our house is shaping up

    One way you can hide the line where the two cabinets join together is by getting a piece of glass custom cut to the length and width of the top of the cabinets from your local glass & mirror company. Sometimes they have left over remnants of glass laying around the shop from jobs they've done and they'll sell it to you pretty cheap. You might be able to get it for free, if you tell them your going to give them a shout out in you next video. Then paint one side of the glass white, put the painted side on the bottom and the top side is going to be a white shinny finish giving you a nice finished surface which is easy to clean and hides the line where the cabinets meet. Basically a hack from IKEAS cabinet glass tops in the color white.

    Awesome video, just what I was looking for!! Thanks for sharing specifics on how to get them to studs with angle brackets, I personally think Ikea missed out on this basic need for these units (for people commenting that rails would work on these, I guess the answer is NOT, the cabinets which works with rails looks very similar but they are smaller unit). I get that you got angle brackets from Home Depot, can you please share though what type/size screws you used for mounting these brackets to the top flat board of the cabinet, top board does to seem to be that thick ... Two Questions!
    1) How long screws did you use for the L brackets?
    2) What is the purpose of the bottom L bracket if you're only screwing the first half of the L bracket but not the bottom? It looks like the shelf is only being held to the wall by sitting on the top L brakcet but they aren't screwed to actually TV stand, just to the stud?

    There's also a mounting rail that works with the Besta so you can keep the backs on while still mounting into studs

    So the bracket that comes with the Besta does not attach directly to the wall. There is a separate mounting bracket that attaches to the wall and will hit the studs. You then attach the Besta to that bracket via the brackets you are showing inside the besta. In your case, there would be 5 brackets attached to the wall, one for each opening.

      I'm currently trying to wall mount this same tv bench (2x120) and the brackets that came with the unit don't align with the wall studs just like shown in this video. I cannot find the separate mounting bracket you've mention. The only other bracket I can find is a railing that isn't compatible with the tv bench (it is only compatible with the regular Besta cabinet). Are you able to provide a link or the name of the bracket you're talking about? Thanks.

      @@mumgamer2842 The bracket I spoke of is used for the normal besta units, not the TV unit. For some reason they use two different systems. My apologies, i thought the one used in this video was just the normal Besta units. No worries, I do have a solution for you that involves two different sizes of wood that you use as a footer and brackets in place of the plastic tabs and a simple pocket screw jig. It is superior to the plastic tabs. If you want me to describe that I can, just reply here.

      @@ericgaona3951 hello. I will try my best to explain. I don't have pictures unfortunately. So first I decided to elevate the item one foot off the ground. So I bought 1x1 8ft piece.of wood to use as a footer for the item to rest on, you can't see it if mounter low to floor. Two I bought a small Kreg Jig for the more complex part. Instead of using the brackets I cut a piece of wood, 1/4(space from back to backing cover) in thick and about 3 inches wide to snuggly fit across the back of the item where the brackets go. I decided to go the length of the cube for each section because it will ensure you hit studs. So if you have a 3 cube item, you would have 3 pieces of wood mounted to the back. You use the pocket kreg jig to attach it to the item, side and top and then use the wood brackets to attach is to the wall. Lastly I screwed it to the footer for extra stability. Hope this makes sense.

    • @ericgaona3951
      @ericgaona3951 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelmccormick5800 This makes perfect sense, just trying picture it. So the top wood is pocket screwed (angled screwed) to the unit? I imagine you just used small wood screws so it penetrates, but not goes through. Thanks.

    Just had to delete everything I was just about to say regarding running cables/outlets inside the cabinets lol.....but for the visible separation Issue (if it's a bother) Ikea sell a glass top for Besta in different colors and lengths (I think they go up to 240cm which covers 4 Besta cabinets, I acknowledge that more than 4 cabinets may present its own gap issue)

    I hope this is clear... Re: your soft close hinges - the website lists them as having the "push open" feature as well as "soft close", yet I didn't see the push open piece installed in your cabinets (it would have been installed on the opposite side from the hinges), nor did I notice you actually pushing in on the doors for them to open. So.... did you just opt to skip the push open feature? I ask because the Ikea reviews for these hinges are awful and many note that the push open feature fails over time. I'm about to order the same unit/doors and would like to know in advance that I can just install the regular hinges without the other piece like you did. Sorry if this is confusing, LOL! Let me know if you need clarification. Your home is beautiful and the Ikea unit was the perfect choice.
