A designer’s tip: Buy the BEST you can afford. If budget is an issue, source secondhand i.e. FB market, Offerup, eBay, Craigslist and thrift stores for SOLID wood pieces that will stand the test of time. Rushing out to buy a glass and metal TV stand “because it’s cheap” is not a good enough excuse in my design handbook. Agree or disagree?
Totally agreed. Hi Julie how are you ? Thank u so much for all ur videos. I have started Decorating my newly built house and have successfully finished kitchen . Your guidance through videos has given me lot of confidence. Gradually I am progressing to living room and kids room . Let see how it turns .
agree…,I have several glass and wood tv stands and the style doesn’t fit with my home decor. I have solid wood cabinet with doors but it is too small for hubby’s new giant tv.
I totally agree! I had the find of a lifetime thrifting an antique Louis XV Buffet under $150 which now serves as a humble tv stand. I believe it may be 18th century -but most certainly antique and very beloved as this incarnation. It has various random French words penciled inside the drawers, heavy patina and the huge key still works. Love every single thing about its old & bowed character.
This is such a well crafted video. You give so much information in a short amount of time. No wasted moments to laugh, stutter, or chit chat. Really appreciate the effort you put into each video.
I love how you are so detail oriented, like giving us the ideal measurements and material specifics. But you seemed to talk faster than usual, almost as if you were rushing to get through the content. I enjoy a slower pace so that it's easier to understand. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Julie I loved these!! I'm looking for a TV stand currently. I love the tips you gave, with my laptop hooking up to my TV with hdmi and using an antenna for TV sometimes cords can be shown so sometimes cord control can be difficult to obtain- so I really like these options with the drawer/full back to help hide for more of a sleek polished look. Thank you! Looking forward to the next video, I've been watching your feng shui video on repeat having a learning class here in my living room where you teach us about getting the compass and how to map out the space for the colors to use. Thanks for that too. Really appreciate you sharing your videos with us!
Just furnished brand new apartment and your videos inspired the process…just knowing your suggestions meant the world to me, now I just love every choice! Thanks Julie.
Hi Julie. I know I've requested this before, but would really welcome you giving us some creative ideas regarding accent chairs. Love all the information and beautiful pieces in this video! Thanks.
So, I rewatched this video like a million times and I fell in love with that Reza credenza since I first laid my eyes on it. While the price nearly gave me a heart attack, the mantra that you said always stuck with me is "have items that you love in your home". Ever since then, I couldn't get anything unless I truly love it and will serve me some practical use. I saved for nearly a year and finally bought the Reza 😊 I can't wait to see it arrived.
Would love it you also did something like this on hallway/entry way console tables! We are looking for one but have a tiny entry way so it can’t be the size many usually are in stores
Added to my list Kriselle! In the meantime, check out my video on entryways in the awkward space series. Tons of ideas to carve out areas in tight/ narrow spaces or where you have no defined entry at all 👍🏻
OMG! Yes! At 7:10 I bought this exact same "Ansel" console from Home Depot online for $160.00 free to-store shipping versus $275 on Wayfair. It was listed as Tvilum brand, and Not as an Ansel. 68" wide. It is 100% the same unit. I got the Truffle color. It is fantastic, sleek and solid!!! (Also stackable or can place side by side) After that, I found other wayfair and Amazon, pieces of furniture like consoles, tables and shelves under different brand names at home depot for much cheaper! *btw, the solid back drawer walls are lowered so a power-strip can set in a drawer and cables can go out the back panel. I cut my own small hole where I wanted in the back without compromising unit support. One drawer is stuffed with all my cables and power supply/surge protector and tv accessories so the open shelves are clear. And I can open the drawer just fine. !!! Love this one. I also highly recommend the BDI brand consoles if you are an Audiophile but those are $2-3K well worth it though!!! (BDI Corridor SV 7128 slim depth ❤️)
Thanks Julie, my only issue is I have a traditional English country style home and I would've liked to have seen some more options that weren't so mid-century modern/contemporary for those of us that don't have that style. Still loved the video though, it contains great information on sizing and scale. For your next one, how about console/entry tables/sofa tables - and if you could include some traditional styles in this, that would be great!😊
You're in luck though, old Edwardian and Victorian antiques have been drastically reduced in price due to the popularity of MCM. A simple Shaker or Mission style sideboard would also work well (vintage enough to fit into an English country style).
Thanks Julie for the great video. I was in the market for a media console for months and had no luck finding the perfect one. The ones I did find were in the price range above $1500 for my specific needs. So I ended custom making one myself with the colors I wanted. But not sure whether the style is modern or farmhouse. Either way my wife loves it and she can't wait to start putting all her decor on it.
Hi Julie I could not find what I needed for my 65 inch tv so I had it custom made. And I put it on nice wheels. This is important bc I have moved that monster to do cable work. And I have huge openings for wire work bc I am sick of guiding wires through tiny back holes. Also helps vent heat. It’s solid wood but not thick heavy wood. I put grommets in the top and use that when placing a Laptop on top to watch using an hdmi connection from the lap top to the tv. I had a multi socket outlet placed inside and grommet holes in all the side panels to ease wiring inside. It has drawers and closed cabinets and open top shelves and one tempered glass front door. It’s a pretty useful piece for me. There are a lot of tech things to consider when designing a media console. Some nice choices here but not for me. I’m too picky! You look terrific! 🥰🤗Margaret
Great suggestions Julie! I love the idea of repurposing the bottom half of china cabinets, buffets and dressers. They can be sanded for a raw look, painted or refinished to one’s personal taste. I would love to see suggestions for cedar chests. I have one from the 70’s I just can’t part with. But it doesn’t really go with my current decor.
Another great video Julie!!! 👏👏👏It was right on time too. I just started sourcing furniture for my son's room and I want to make it something that will see him from preteen to young man. I will definitely be upgrading his tv console from open shelving to something more stylish and tidy. Loved the tv measurement cheat sheet it makes life much easier.
My girl Julie! My apartment is tiny, need help finding bed with storage and couch with pullout bed/storage. Something affordable yet, durable and practical. Thank you, love your videos, content and creativity!
I have sofa beds on the channel now, search the topic and my name JN. I’m not a fan of beds with storage- my advice is to source the bed, then compartments underneath so you can use it for seasonal storage. I have that video under “storage and organization”
Excellent advice on width, thanks. I would be cautious about storing heavy components inside any of of these. Most are rated for the TV on top, not for max weight on the shelves.
@@JulieKhuu unfortunately, no. I bought a couple support legs (one for the front and one in the back) off of Amazon and it did the trick. They have all kinds of options.
Typical, just bought a credenza before watching this! I did get it from ebay, and it's sold wood from the 50s, needs some love. But anyway i loved this video, so informative. Although I've only a 32" tv and the credenza is 82", so i hope the tv doesn't look lost! Thanks for all your great videos!
The only thing I would add is to make sure the remotes can work with the doors closed, and without rattles, if you are planning on a home theater setup. If the remote can't reach the equipment, then you have to deal with open doors, and if you're watching Dune, the doors will rattle when open. Other than that, if you have a screen over 55" be prepared to remove the legs to get the screen to eye level for best picture.
Julie, this is an older video but really helps. Would you consider presenting on how to anchor a space between the types of legs on furniture pieces? I need a media console but am struggling with it sitting on the floor or up on matching legs to the rest of my furniture. I need a dresser but same issue. I love your tips and knowledge. Thank you.
Sitting on the floor adds heft and weight, plus nothing falls beneath it. When the piece is anchored against a wall- I like it to have some weight. Furnishings floating in the room can have legs to all the room to breathe. Hope that helps Virginia! Thank you for watching 🩷
Thanks Julie! This video comes just in time because I’m looking for a new TV stand right now. My old one was purchased only around a month ago. But it’s too high for me. My neck gets tired so easily. It’s a pity that you didn’t mention the proper height for the console according to the TV size. Waiting for your further info. Thanks! Love your videos ❤️
The height has everything to do with where it goes. In the bedroom, the media console may be taller if you’re sitting and watching in bed vs. the living room on a low vs. tall sofa. So that’s a detail that you need to determine for your condition Stephanie
Great video with lovely suggestions!! I ordered from one of the merchants you showcased. After 30 days theres still no information of delivery. They want to be paid in full but no communication. My fault for not reading Frances & Sons reviews which were horrid especially the 2023 complaints from Better Business Bureau 😳
I love your videos! Thank you for all the wonderful advice! I’m moving to new house (30 hrs old) and planning to style it with a coastal grandmother aesthetic vibe. Can you please do a video on this design style? Thanks!
@JulieKhuu ~If you want to appeal to the techies in the household, mention the textured fabric on the front like you did, but mention the airflow capability for the techies setting up the electronics in them. Us techies & the new trend now is better layouts tend to focus on airflow for electronics, dust protection for electronics, and the cable management holes placement for good invisible cabling & ease of use. Fabric is a go to for us because it improves airflow for cooling down electronics & some dust blocking.
Speakers go inside the cabinets behind mesh (you can look for consoles that offer this like the black/ metal one or remove a door panel and replace with mesh), amp and subwoofer go in the corners of the room for surround sound (which is how I have mine). I have a Sonos playbar that is mounted directly below my TV
Follow the shape of the banquette Annette. If the bench is long, use a rectangular dining table. If the length and width are the same, square or round will work
Thanks for your suggestions but I think you over-emphasized style while missing the point of a media console, which is to hold media equipment such as cable box, A/V receiver or stereo amp, DVD player, streaming Music player, etc. Especially important: consider depth of your receiver. One of mine is 18.5 inches so I’d need a media console into which it would fit … and would need to ensure there’s space behind the device for cables, so we’re talking maybe 21 inches or even 22 inches. Since it’s difficult to find units this deep, the search for one is very difficult. If you can help with that, it would be great.
I would source a deep dresser in this case. You can find fabulous ones with a top cutout for oversized media equipment. You did the work to measure all inventory, now try searching “dressers” instead of media consoles. Good luck!
Just purchased an 83" tv and having a tough time finding a stand. I'm going to hang the tv on the wall and the bottom at 30 inches off the floor which means the stand has to be low profile, only up to about 22 inches tall and between 80 and 90 inches wide.
This is very helpful… The one I have now is the first glass one that was x’d 14:16 out😅 want something more sleek, modern and functional for a small space. What is used to set the TV on to the console? I don’t know what you call that, and are they standardized for most smart TVs? Mine is a Toshiba Fire 56”. It has to go in a corner so I think I will only be able to get about a 60 inch console.. thank you!
I have 22 ft ceilings. It’s always a challenge and my space is odd shaped. I luv all your suggestions, but way too small for my space. I do have a modern piece now that backs the tv with wood and has small drawers. A floating unit . If I had a unit made ; Would you suggest it going up 2/3 of the wall height.?
No. I suggest using my measurements for TV heights (in the media room video) and using the space below for the custom console. You need to work backwards in this case.
Square or round table works best for square rooms. Rectangular and oval table works best for rectangular rooms Annette. Check out my video on dining room mistakes for more tips
Great design tips, thank you! I am thinking of getting a tv stand with a fire place, what are your thoughts? My home does not have a fireplace would love one someday.
My media console and 65-in TV are the first things you see when you walk in the front door of my small 1950s ranch. Would love suggestions on how to make it stand out less
Demarcate an entry zone so you see that first instead Ruth. Check out my video on entryways in the awkward space series. Tons of tips on how to carve out this space when you don’t have a foyer 👍🏻
Wow the console to tv ratio helped me a ton ! I have a Tiny home. Only 1500 sq ft . Open concept so you can imagine how tiny my living room area is . Would you recommend a 55 in vs a 65 in for the living room ? Thank you !!
Why do I always like the expensive ones?! UGH! The Reza one....ooooo! My brother said I need another one and I do. What you said is true....glass and metal are dust magnets! .
Hi Julie, Thanks for the Video. I am currently on the market for a console and this video comes in handy. I also love your dress where is it from? Thank you,
Sorry if folks have asked this before but how do you get remote controls to work inside closed cabinets? Nearly everyone has a cable box that’s the target of remotes. That’s why people buy open stuff, no? Or - serious question!- are you suggesting we open the doors on the rare (🤣🤣🤣) occasions we’re using our TVs, gaming systems, etc.?
You may simply leave the cable box on top of the console and mount the TV Alex. My boxes are wireless, so I actually have them hidden in a corner of my husband’s office. Of course if this doesn’t work for you, specify the consoles that have a little cutout for the cable box. Do what works for you!
Thanks Julie! I am looking for a t.v. stand! I like the IKEA stand. Although the selections you showed are for a more modern space, but I think some may work. I just might have to chose a different finish. What are your thoughts on whether or not to mount the t.v. above a fireplace. I am debating doing that. I just don't want to drill holes in my pretty red brick which has colored grout. For now I use a stand, but it puts the t.v. off center whereas the fireplace is centered In the room...easier for t.v. viewing. Maybe an art picture t.v. with art frame?(don't know the correct name for these) 😊
If you’re a long time follower of the channel, you’ll know I consider it a huge mistake to mount the TV above the fireplace for ergonomic issues Ida. I would place it off center on a stand adjacent to the fireplace for optimal viewing. I love Samsung frame TVs, I have one in my daughter’s room now 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu Thanks! I have not followed that long. But I like the suggestion for the framed one. I have a skinny 10 ft. Deep By 20 ft long living room so to have one above the fireplace works better, but I don't like it. I currently use a stand. It takes up more floor space and makes one end cramped. But thanks for the suggestion. I do have an inset space next to the fireplace I could put a cabinet there. Just can't view the t.v. from there so it juts out into the space. Right now the furniture is placed so they face the fireplace and works well for flow and conversation. 😊
Hello sweetheart💕 i am half way with my mini home renovation, and i am actually looking for a TV set but as i have three dogs i Need space for their beds so i must choose a floating console...i'd love to hear some ideas from you. Love from Italy
I'm looking for something really functional for AV receivers, amplifiers, game consoles and center channel speakers. Most consoles are not really functional for housing AV receivers within them as they are too shallow/not deep enough from front to back. Many also do not focus on ventilation. Would appreciate a list that caters to such equipment.
Any cabinet will do Ann! Typical media consoles are larger. You can use an entry console or even bedroom dresser for smaller spaces that double as storage
@@JulieKhuu really good 👍 I am practical but very visual, so I was able to use the table for my indoor house plants and still have a great looking table underneath my 65 inch TV. In addition I put baskets underneath my media unit to store all of my DVD'S 📀
I have my 55” black tv in a large 5 piece walnut entertainment center, it has drawers with window doors & some lighting, but it still looks very dark. Are these things out of style?
I’m not a huge fan of wall units because they take up so much space Sylvia. If you paint them the same color as the walls, this helps to lighten up the space
My husband has a 75” tv that is going to be hung on the wall. I want an electric fireplace with shelves on both sides that is 72.5” to go underneath. Do you think that would look ok?
Your calculations appear to be off. You calculated the stands width using the diagonal width of the TV and not the horizontal width like you said to use. 32" TV (29" width) = 29 x 1.33 = 38.57” console 42" TV (36" width) = 36 x 1.33 = 47.88” console 55" TV (50" width) = 50 x 1.33 = 66.5” console 65〞 TV (57.5” wiath) = 57.5 x 1.33 = 76.475” console 75" TV (66" width) = 66 x 1.33 = 87.78” console Please correct me if I miss understood.. thank you

I love your videos! Thank you for all the wonderful advice! I’m moving to new house (30 hrs old) and planning to style it with a coastal grandmother aesthetic vibe. Can you please do a video on this design style? Thanks!
I can see it now! 😍👍🏻
Also, consider whether IR signals from your remote will pass through the front of the media console.
Yes, excellent point. Thanks for watching and commenting Ron!
Helpful content. Thanks
Thank you for watching Emon 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you for your inspiration ❤️
Thank you so much for watching Tracey! 🙏🏻☺️
Plz post a video for buffet side boards as well
Will add to my list Sana 👍🏻
@JulieKhuu ~If you want to appeal to the techies in the household, mention the textured fabric on the front like you did, but mention the airflow capability for the techies setting up the electronics in them. Us techies & the new trend now is better layouts tend to focus on airflow for electronics, dust protection for electronics, and the cable management holes placement for good invisible cabling & ease of use. Fabric is a go to for us because it improves airflow for cooling down electronics & some dust blocking.
Thank you for watching! 🙏😊
the Harto Marius Sideboard is amazing option if anyone wants something stylish & different. 😁
Will check it out 👍
Thanks for great video
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Good tips lovely choices however what do you when you have 2 speakers, 1 amplifier and 1 subwoofer speaker to fit in?
Speakers go inside the cabinets behind mesh (you can look for consoles that offer this like the black/ metal one or remove a door panel and replace with mesh), amp and subwoofer go in the corners of the room for surround sound (which is how I have mine). I have a Sonos playbar that is mounted directly below my TV
Thank you for what you do
Thank you for watching Omotanwa 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you so much !
Thank you for watching Heather! 🙏☺️
Thank you for the video. Can you do something about bookshelves and home offices. Thanks.
Hi! I have videos on both topics now, just search the title plus my name ☺️
@@JulieKhuu Thanks :).
I watched the dinning room video but it didn't talk about banquette setting. What table would be best for that?
It has to go in a corner so I think I will only be able to get about a 60 inch console.. thank you!
Most newer TVs come with a stand. You remove the stand if you want to mount it onto the wall. They also make corner cabinets, but measure first 📐
I have 22 ft ceilings.
Get video helpful information! Can you please do video on banquette setting. Like when should it have a square table or a circle table. Thank you
Square or round table works best for square rooms. Rectangular and oval table works best for rectangular rooms Annette. Check out my video on dining room mistakes for more tips
Thank you so much
Thank you for watching 🙏☺️
Great design tips, thank you! I am thinking of getting a tv stand with a fire place, what are your thoughts? My home does not have a fireplace would love one someday.
I would keep them separate so you’re not challenged by the existing designs Jacquiline
BDI 8179 is the best entertainment cabinet.
Wow the console to tv ratio helped me a ton ! I have a Tiny home. Only 1500 sq ft . Open concept so you can imagine how tiny my living room area is . Would you recommend a 55 in vs a 65 in for the living room ? Thank you !!
Bigger the better for me, but I’m a huge TV watcher ☺️
hi Julie - can you please talk about sourcing sinks for both kitchen and bathrooms?
Sure! Those are two entire videos in themselves 😅
@@JulieKhuu OMG - I think I figured this one out. I'm going to post a video suggestion for my next project. Thank you!
Why do I always like the expensive ones?! UGH! The Reza one....ooooo! My brother said I need another one and I do. What you said is true....glass and metal are dust magnets!
.
Haha me too! We have expensive taste Girl 🙌🏻😆
Hi Julie,
Thanks for the Video. I am currently on the market for a console and this video comes in handy. I also love your dress where is it from?
Thank you,
Thank you for watching Carine! It’s old from Madewell ☺️
do you have any videos on designing/decorating a kitchen nook/l-shaped banquette surrounded by windows open layout?
Yes, check out my kitchen design mistakes video and the episode on small kitchens in the small space series Kae! Tons of inspiration 👍🏻☺️
Hello sweetheart💕 i am half way with my mini home renovation, and i am actually looking for a TV set but as i have three dogs i Need space for their beds so i must choose a floating console...i'd love to hear some ideas from you. Love from Italy
I love the Besta collection from Ikea! So many ways to customize it according to your measurements Stefania
If the TV is wall mounted, what distance do you suggest between the bottom of the TV and the top of the console?
6”-8” feels good and allows you to add a playbar/ speaker if you need it
I'm looking for something really functional for AV receivers, amplifiers, game consoles and center channel speakers. Most consoles are not really functional for housing AV receivers within them as they are too shallow/not deep enough from front to back. Many also do not focus on ventilation. Would appreciate a list that caters to such equipment.
I’ll add that to my list! Thank you for the feedback 💗🙏
I designed my tv console myself: it's a boiserie kind since I have high ceilings
Fabulous Maria!
I have a 85" So yes it's been real stressful
Sounds like you’d have to go custom to make it work 👍🏻
Can you please help me to choose media console and coffee table,
Any ideas for a smaller TC
Any cabinet will do Ann! Typical media consoles are larger. You can use an entry console or even bedroom dresser for smaller spaces that double as storage
@@JulieKhuu thanks
Julie hello, How ironic this video posted....I just bought the Reed console from Pottery Barn in a warm black...
Nice Carol! How’s it working for you so far?
@@JulieKhuu really good 👍 I am practical but very visual, so I was able to use the table for my indoor house plants and still have a great looking table underneath my 65 inch TV. In addition I put baskets underneath my media unit to store all of my DVD'S 📀
Thank u
Thank you for watching Mai! 🙏🏻✨
What about video game tv stands with glass doors and holes for cords?
Closed door cabinets would hide the clutter better Nicholas
I have my 55” black tv in a large 5 piece walnut entertainment center, it has drawers with window doors & some lighting, but it still looks very dark. Are these things out of style?
I’m not a huge fan of wall units because they take up so much space Sylvia. If you paint them the same color as the walls, this helps to lighten up the space
My husband has a 75” tv that is going to be hung on the wall. I want an electric fireplace with shelves on both sides that is 72.5” to go underneath. Do you think that would look ok?
The TV would almost be the same size. It will take up the entire space if that’s your intent 👍🏻
Hi. I am looking for that mirror that you have in your closet. Please help me locate that mirror. Thanks!!!
It’s vintage AJ! Anthropologie makes a really great dupe
What about tv that are 50inch? What size console ?
The TV should take up 2/3 of the size of the console Krystal. So the console should be around 75” wide
How heigh should the tv stand be ? On average. I am placing a 55inch tv on it.
There is no “average”, but 25”-30” is a nice height with a TV stand
What do you think of the Norre media console? Any feedback would be highly appreciated!
I’m literally using a piano as my tv unit. 😂
Haha multifunctional
@@JulieKhuu, it’s basically not used anymore. 😅
BDI makes an amazing console. It is a cry once investment..lol
Sounds like a winner Becky! 😆
Good morning I'm thinking change mine because it is too big
Scale and proportion is so important for the space to function well 👍🏻
Does anyone think I need a TV console for a wall mounted 75” Samsung Frame TV in living room?
Yes, always
💓💓💓💓
Your calculations appear to be off. You calculated the stands width using the diagonal width of the TV and not the horizontal width like you said to use.
32" TV (29" width) = 29 x 1.33 = 38.57” console
42" TV (36" width) = 36 x 1.33 = 47.88” console
55" TV (50" width) = 50 x 1.33 = 66.5” console
65〞 TV (57.5” wiath) = 57.5 x 1.33 = 76.475” console
75" TV (66" width) = 66 x 1.33 = 87.78” console
Please correct me if I miss understood.. thank you
Yes, you misunderstood Benjamin. Imagine cutting a console in 3 equal widths. The TV should take up 2 of those portions, not 1 1/3.
@@JulieKhuu oh gotcha! Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense now thank you
I want one that you can sit on. Thank you.
Looks for pieces made of solid wood with no legs and lower in height. I would stick to 20”H which is a standard seat height
👍👍👍
Thank you for watching Sibongile 🙏🏻☺️
fab
Thank you for watching Constantine 🙏🏻☺️
so my milk crate stand won't cut it.
How about the weight, my biggest fear would be stand wont handle the weight of a huge tv
you are looking hot with this dress😍
Promoting expensive junk...
