Way ahead of its time. You look at some of the other cars coming out in the early-mid 70's and it's easy to see why people initially went nuts over the Bricklin. It's also hard to not atleast respect their attempts at innovation, not just with styling but with the safety measures and the acrylic body. Unfortunately with innovation comes significant risk and in this case it didn't work out.

I think you need to drive my Bricklin. There's something wrong with that one if it can't outrun a Delorean. The Bricklin was tested by Autoweek and it outperformed the 1975 Corvette in acceleration handling and breaking. Most Bricklins have been fitted with faster more reliable air powered doors and air powered headlights. That's the problem with all original Bricklins they need a few upgrades to make them a car you can drive all day. The upgrades don't take away from the originality it just makes them better. Once again I invite you to drive my Bricklin. 😎

My dad briefly had an early Bricklin with the AMC 360 engine, and loved that car. He came from a Chevy family and was able to compare it to a 327 powered early C3 Corvette, and says the Bricklin was much faster. Unfortunately most Bricklins were later models with emissions-choked engines and that meant it never could get a reputation for performance.

The Bricklin was manufactured in my hometown of Saint John New Brunswick in Canada. The issues wire the pop up head lights and the doors failing (those doors were heavy). They would barely make a dent and destroy another car. but if you were in an emergency situation, who couldn't escape. The company went bankrupted, but I love how they could hold up in an accident.

@@davet231 All of your observations are correct and intelligent - I am not going to argue this just because I'm a troll on the internet. My father met Malcolm Bricklin long ago when he was (going to) buy one of the cars. I also did contract I.T. work for a guy who did contract engineering work for Bricklin. That engineer said that the team originally proposed the torsion bar setup, but that team was a room full of intelligent people who immediately said "What if it rolls over?". John Delorean was in a room of rich a-holes who just said "That's tubular!" and then sneezed coke all over the drawings. (It's a funny tale, of course but that's what I learned)
But yes, you are correct - the system wasn't so great that it would actually address these issues. If it were that great, it would be part of the sales brochure.

As a owner of a Bricklin, I don't know why the one shown here is slow? mine is a 1976 and is smogged out with a single exhaust and a catalytic converter, but moves out better than the orange one on here. I know a club member who owns both a Bricklin and DeLorean and says his Brick will outrun his DeLorean any day. I will have to dig in and make more videos of mine! they are awesome cars. built on its own chassis the Bricklin has AMC Hornet front suspension, rear gremlin. so its 70's tech at best. the 1974 came with a AMC 360 V8 with either a 4sp Borg Warner Manual, or a Chrysler 727 Transmission. The 75/76 came with the Ford 351 Windsor and the FMX Ford Automatic. It did compete with the Corvette of the day, also many owners converted the doors to air, so they are much faster and smoother.

I have a mechanic whose bread and butter is Volvos. Imagine my surprise when one day he had a DeLorean on the lift, but upon reflexion it made sense since it uses the same engine as the Volvo 760 (plus he likes working on unusual cars and the DeLorean has the advantage that all parts are readily available). Regarding the Bricklin, when I was in high school in Montreal in the mid-70s, one of our teachers drove a Peugeot which wasn't particularly reliable as a result of which she would every so often get a lift from her brother, a well-known journalist and man-about-town, in his brand-new Bricklin.

For 1975, it wasn't bad, considering their resources. GM was the largest and wealthiest car maker by far, yet they still produced the Chevy Vega, which had a sleeveless aluminum block and iron heads, and no coolant recovery tank, so coolant was just expelled to the ground when the engine got hot. The result was predictable. Despite the extremely low production numbers, I wouldn't be surprised that in a few decades from now, there will be more Bricklin survivors than Vega survivors.

Within a year I found: 195 tiny ponies not horses, high single digit gas mileage, cracking vinyl interior trim, stress cracking fiberglass, a mysterious non-starting problem (finally diagnosed as a bad ground), and generally sloppy construction inside and out. I sold it 30 years ago and have not once thought about a rebuy.

The Bricklin was made in New Brunswick Canada. The idea was that out of work people in the fisheries could build a car with limited training. The government was desperate as people were out of work due to the closing of the fishing grounds. Its a nice idea, and the people were interested, but they just had no training. I am sure they could have made great lobster traps though.

I went to college with Mark Bricklin, Malcolm's son. The ads for the Bricklin touted the fact that there was no cigarette lighter, for safety reasons -- no dropped ashes. He told me that the engineers just forgot to design one in. Mark was driving a Subaru. Before he had his own car company, Malcolm was the first importer of Subarus.

    • @summicron90

No...There is no ashtray either. Im sure they didnt forget a spare tire either, there was NO spare tire or jack for the car. Changing a flat on the side of the road was not safe. The "Safety Vehicle 1" was full of little quirks like that. The doors only needed 12 inches clearance to open, so you could get out if an idiot parked you in.

one of the best reviews of both cars I've ever seen! Great footage, respectful but honest commentary and a funny - real life resembling - competition. Thanks a lot!
There is so much bad reviews about the De Lorean, that I can't really agree with. Just because an affordable car looked like a Super Sports car doesn't mean it has to perform like one. It was a respectable approach - seems to have been quite usable in everyday life with really unique details. I think I would like the design even if it had never been the movie star. Its kind 'a cool looking from every angle, sitting flat on the street with its nice tail lights. Pretty timeless design!

Former DeLorean owner here; bought new and driven for 8 years and 26,000 miles. I did not experience most of the problems the car supposedly had; in fact the only real "problem" was that yes, the straight-line performance did not match the looks. I had a turbo installed in mine - helped a lot at speed, but not off the line, of course. It didn't matter that it wouldn't win any races; what mattered was that everywhere you went people were gaga over it, and when you left it parked it would usually be covered with fingerprints when you got back - people had to feel that stainless steel finish.
If you know the story about the cocaine sting the FBI did on John DeLorean, you'll appreciate the vanity plate I then put on it: "SNORT", along with a frame that said "Things Go Better With Coke". Believe it or not I never got stopped, although I was careful to never carry anything that looked like white powder in the car. (The D.O.T. finally did cancel it after somebody complained, but I still have it.)

The DeLorean is, of course, the more well-thought-out car with mass appeal in mind, while still being ahead of its time, despite being bogged down by a mediocre engine and problematic electronics. I still remember, as a young kid, insisting my mother drive by the DeLorean that was forever parked in the driveway of a house near our grocery store, just because it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Forget the BttF movies, it's simply a sublime looking 80s car, a living embodiment of that era.
