Exploring Kenya's Most Unique City: Mombasa (#61)

  • It was time to explore Mombasa, Kenya's major port on the Indian ocean and it's most interesting city. I didn't have a plan, but I knew I wanted to explore the history of the city. Along the way I had some nice Swahili food and met some friendly locals, while avoiding any trouble...or did I?

      Agree 💯, I think his desire and ability to learn the language allows him to be in this way, I love the fact Tommy makes such an effort to learn the culture, history and language and my experience of travel and these videos show the locals appreciate the effort......it is telling when you watch his videos and you see how shocked locals are when they hear him speak, shows what went before him!

    He’s like Bald & Bankrupt, adventurous and multilingual, but more chilled and not laddish. I really enjoy much of Mr. Bald’s channel, but sometimes, especially with Harald Baldr, he gets a bit silly and churlish. I like Sabbatical’s maturity in how he deals with people, and he clearly respects the cultures he visits.

    • @osiris3103
      @osiris3103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Bald lacks elementary human respect towards others and completely disregards the culture of the country he is in. I tried watching his stuff and I cringed hard and often. It's no coincidence he had troubles because of his behavior in Chechnya. I have always been saying that if you are respectful and decent, you will rarely have problems no matter where you go.

    As I mentioned before as an Indian born in East Africa our forefathers were brought by the British to East Africa in the 18th century to build railway. Mombasa was the entry point. Then some moved inland to Uganda &Tanzania etc. so lot of Indian influence there like chapati was adopted by locals which Indians cooked every day. Even Indian language was adopted by East Africans. You will find lot of Indians influence in East African cuisine. Been to Mombasa umpteen times since I was a baby. My mother was born in Mombasa

      The history taught in Kenyan schools is that the Indians were brought by the British to build the railway. However , the truth is that the Indians used to be in east Africa before the Portuguese. They used to trade with the swahili people and the Arabs. We call Persia/Iran region _Uajemi_ in Swahili. I have no idea why.

    • @kenttheboomer721

      My understanding is that the language developed over time, borrowing words from the languages of the visitors and merchants to the area. Bantu, Arab and maybe Persian traders as well.

      Persians are the ones who emigrated to mombasa not Arabs. There is a big park in Nairobi called jeevanjee a successful Persian businessman during 1800s

There are thousands of Zanzibari origin people living there for centuries.....* 😊
