Go to RV shows with a piece of tape on your shirt that reads "not buying"... Buy a new year old model.. Buy at the end of the quarter.. Offer what you want to pay to multiple dealers.. Make your offer an out the door price... I did all these things myself. I bought a 2018 in 2019 in March. I offered $50k on a sales price of $62k.. They accepted my offer so I drove 5hrs to see the unit.. They had it and the paperwork ready.. I told them I had to sleep on it and drove home. The next day they called and offered the unit for $48k. I told them I'd go $45k and they accepted..

great tips....my 2 Biggest tips: rent (as mentioned) and after purchasing SPEND A NIGHT OR 2 in the dealer parking lot and go over EVERYTHING. seriously, this is huge. Dealers will fix ANYTHING FAST at the time of purchase. DO NOT drive it off the lot until every square inch is taken care of

I was going to watch this but I want to thank you for identifying it as basic info that everyone already knows with the “don’t buy an rv until you watch THIS video” disclaimer. We always know that means “a 30 second google search will get you all the information about to be shared”. Thank you for saving me a good amount of time. As a thank you, I wanted to engage and help with the algorithm, so that is why I am commenting 🙂

This was an excellent RV Buying Tips video. 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
When you mention you would now like the beds on each side rather than one in the back, I suggest measuring the width and length of the mattress/bed (that’s in the Class B you want) and get a cheap mattress topper and cut it to the exact size of the Class B mattress/bed, then sleep on that for a couple nights to find out if you really do want one that narrow & especially the length (take special note of the length of each bed in your desired Class B-usually one side is shorter than the other to accommodate kitchen counter, etc). You can put the mattress topper on your own mattress at home to sleep on, but put something to keep you confined to the sized mattress topper you cut. It’s just to try the size out, not the comfortability of the Class B mattress. Also, make sure you each sit in the driver seat to make sure you have enough leg space-not all driver’s seat can be pushed back as far as you may need).

Very good advice and yes its time to get a Travato K model. For the both of you a white Travato with the volta lithium system. And for Bob add a lift kit, tires and wheels and a brush guard. You can transfer the ladder from the model you have now. You will be so happy!

I am an active senior whether that matters or not. I have owned a seasonal trailer before but looking at first time motorhome. I need to understand basics from using the toilet, dumping, cooking fumes and limitations and the basics. Also I love to grill so would be looking to take a weber baby small charcoal bbq. Any ideas. ? On my own with a dog. 😊 p.S its my retirement dream to drive and camp across Canada

I was originally going to get the Thor Sequence 20J with Pop-top, our local La Mesa had a used one in stock . My wife and I went to check it out. While inspecting the unit (It had 2000 miles on it) - that's already a bad sign for a used one, I found screws on the floor near the driver side. My wife said she did not like the unit's quality of materials. La Mesa didn't want to make a deal, this was in 2021. So there's that. I then checked a few more TH-cam videos and found that Couchman's Beyond 22C had rave reviews. I joined their Facebook group and found many people writing praises for the build quality. Dove tail drawers, maple wood, high quality finish and manufacturer support. I took the plunge and waited 10 months for the build. Glad that I did. The only issue I had was the screen door, and a broken sliding door window (Ford Manufacturer defect). I also had a few minor issues with a bad tire stem valve (Ford) where the tire had a slow leak. Fixed for free at Discount Tires! Shout out to them!

Very nice video! I agree with everything. Must say my 2021 Thor 20AT has 31K miles and noooo major issues at all never back to dealer. Only issues noticed some loose screws here and there replaced. Oh and I drove over a curb and crushed gray tank hose so had it taken off and now luv my little spout it has. Also maybe buying as a second owner with a max 1 yr old vehicle usually kinks worked out😂

Great advice. We’re seasoned RV owners and just recently bought a class B van since it’s one of the remaining things we’ve not owned yet. You didn’t mention which kind you were in about mid episode, but it’s the exact Travato 59K we now have. We love the features and the layout. Only had it a couple of weeks so far, but so far, so good. We also looked at the Thor Telero, and while we like it at first glance, there were many things we had concerns about. Your recent video on your camper illustrates most of that.

One point I would add is how handy are you? Lots of things are going to need fixing no matter how much you spend. If you have to go to the dealer for everything, the rig spends more time there than the campground. Some folks have their rig tied up for months at a time waiting to be fixed.

    • @dww1213
      @dww1213 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes these guys are handy but look how much time lost to figure out repairs and then when repairs too complex having to leave the rig for weeks or longer.

All GREAT tips! I am in the 3rd year of my Class B research. Have already changed my mind on what i thought we wanted. We have decided on the 2024 Travato 59k. What's killing me is the price has increased greatly since 2020 (but so have the features).

    • @10002One
      @10002One ปีที่แล้ว

howdy - we were wanting to down size from our not very big 24' Class C to the Travato 59K, but even though it comes from a very reputable manufacturer, we know because the same one made our Class C, my wife doesn't want that chassis. Maybe because her brother has his own auto repair shop. Anyway, we are considering the Pleasure Way OnTour 2.0 as it is on the AWD Ford Transit chassis with the 3.5 Eco boost and 8 speed transmission similar to the tranny in our Class C, which is very capable and easy to drive. We want the short wheelbase as it will become her daily driver (acceptable gas mileage) so we can get rid of her Highlander and the aforementioned Class C. Not to mention the OnTour comes with a 5 year warranty from manufacturer. Wish us luck!

I've owned 5 RV's over the past 20 years and sold my last RV 3 years ago. Lately, I've been thinking about buying a class B and looked at a few. I told myself when I sold the last RV that I would never buy another. But, here I am looking at RV's. After watching a few of your videos, all the memories came back about how much maintenance and repairs go into owning an RV - and my RV's were all high-end RV's. I'll admit that the problems with your RV are extreme, but my high-end RV's had lots of problems too. Thanks for the reality check.

Excellent recommendations from a couple of SEASONED RV buyers! Also, sometimes "you don't know what you don't know" about HOW you will use your RV. Road trippin'? Camping at RV parks? Hitting the BLM rough roads? Taking the Interstates? Taking only two lanes? Quick weekend excursions? LONG extended cross country trips? Are you a destination camper rushing to a spot or a meandering "stop at every coffee shop and farmer's market" kind of roamer putting on a 150 miles a day and staying at a different place every night? ALL of that will affect your decision.

Try before you buy is essential. It is a test of the unit and the lifestyle and the logistics. Renting for more than a week is also encouraged. Yes, rental costs are eye popping, but if it turns out your mind is changed or altered, that is huge. Good video!

This was VERY helpful and I wish I had known even a little of this information before buying my class B. The best advice for a total RV Newbie is ...Don't Be! That's right, don't be a newbie at your first purchase. Learn as much as you can BEFORE you buy an RV!!! Find and learn from a trusted RV mechanic, or someone with some experience with RVs, and learn what it takes to do some maintenance and light repairs yourself. There will be ongoing maintenance and repairs with any rig! An RV purchase is not like buying a new car! Then when you have graduated from newbie status, and if you still want to own a rig, GO FOR IT! 🏞️All the best to you!

Great video! They say 3rd time is a charm….if you sold your “Mr. Lemon” what would you choose next? For me, my first Rv would be a 2020-2023 AWD Ford Transit cargo van that I would build out. . . but hire someone to do the electrical stuff. I do not want propane.

Nicely done! What should be Number 1 is don't buy a Thor right?! Item 2 is to check via all the venues you mention into the reputation of good and timely SERVICE and especially waiting time for appointments is for the dealer you are considering purchasing the RV from. Warranties--they sound good but if it takes weeks or months to get parts and similar timeframes to get the actual service- WALK AWAY FROM THAT DEALER. I think warranties should now include either payments for loss of use and/or loaners you can use while your RV sits in the service yard. By my estimation the ratio of sales people to service people is on the order of 4-1 or more. Your advice about recording the walk through is great, I would add, take the time to look it all over carefully--poor molding are not little things, the are a symptom of poor workmanship AND quality control and should raise a warning flag--you guys know this very well. I would add, look under the RV--lot's of important stuff under your floor. Financing--there are lots of a independent entities out there that can finance an RV and they often offer better interest rates and more that a dealer won't. Check them out. Know that you are pre-approved for financing when you start to shop.

We highly agree with all your suggestions. We might add, visit the factory if possible. You get a great feel for the quality of your build. We were fortunate enough to get a tour of Embassy. A great company. Unfortunately, our budget did not work for a new Embassy so we ended up with a used Winnebago Paseo. (We'd done 8 of your 10 suggestions and are very happy thus far with the result). I am 6'5" so basically the only class B we could consider had to be based on the Ford Transit and even then, some models had limited head room. Glad we took the time because I can actually take a shower standing up. Also, as we sleep together and, for the most part, travel with the bed made up, we did not want a rear bath that we would have to climb over the bed when we wanted to get to it. We enjoy your posts. Hope to meet you on the road some time.

We purchased our used RV from a dealership. The original owners turned in their Class B motorhome to buy a new one... everything worked from day one.....
But, I learned a lot as time went on.... first, never purchase an RV with "low generator hours".. Generators need exercise and regular service....
Avoid propane refrigerators, actually an all electric RV is probably a good idea....
Don't get hydronic heat ... sounds cool, but, I'm glad we don't have it. Everything I've read online is that it's a PITA ...
If you're on a budget, don't get diesel.... diesel is great, and it's a top performance vehicle, fuel economy is fantastic... and super smooth.... but, you'll pay more for maintenance.
Look at the reputation of the company building your conversion..... details matter...
Actually, Embassy RV is a great value for the money...we have a friend with one....on the Ford Transit.....Ford makes a really good van.....
Finally, price is ONLY one factor in any transaction... the real question is...." Can you work with these people"? Will they stand behind their product or just run away and hide? You don't want them to just delay, delay, delay and run out the warranty and your patience....

I think it’s just the way it is with RV living. In the end, we went with the Thor Sequence 20K because of the lower price. So far, we’ve only had a few problems that we’ve fixed ourselves. 🤞🤞 Hopefully Mr. Lemon will start behaving! Or, maybe you should trade his sorry butt in for a Travato 59K or a Tellaro 20L! I have Thor tellaro 20AT bought almost 3yrs ago during pandemic. I had issue but nothing compared what you guys had. We have our complaint but it’s our first rv and it made lots fun memory for us. Lately been very interest want to trade in for navion class c so it’s more comfortable but it’s hard to justify true extra cost and money going to lose trading in the tellaro. But more all the good memories we had especially trip during the pandemics. So probably going to wait till I can afford two rv so I have a c and b :)

I researched for 8 months just B vans. (We had a teardrop but hooking up caused too much pain for husband). So van is what was left (I knew it all along but he was nervous about money). Read everything I could get my hands on. Watched every TH-cam video on our final ones. Joined the group months ahead. Looked up articles on vans. Did RV shows. But we are also very tent camping trained. We still have a hard time using a sink. Had the van for months before we used sink this last week. We like using the bathrooms at campgrounds or bucket when boondocking (again used to camping). So I think for us, most vans would work. As long as in good shape. The length of bed and width is the number 1 item for us due to age and pain. So when I researched….all Thors had no bed that worked for us….class B. BUT hands down get an inspector. QC just has not been the same as before Covid. I feel bad for you two for you have had more than your share of issues. I would have loved a storyteller but just way more than we could pay in retirement. My suggestion is one of the travatos. Or maybe it is a class B+…..around $200,000 like a leisure travel unity. They are real nice. Or a pleasure way. I really am sorry you two are going through this, but great video to to help others!! Enjoy your videos!!

The more research you do the more you will realize that you don't want to buy one. That is unless you have a lot of money that you don't want to lose. The romance of the road is not what it's cracked up to be.

You really need to look at Embassy RV vans. Floorplans like you want and super quality and service after the sale. Also, NO dealers only direct from factory.

In the process of buying a Pleasure-Way Plateau TS . I have not had a inspector come out and check this RV. I am the third owner of this RV. The RV currently has 22,000 miles on it and is a 2019. My understanding is Pleasure-Way is a very highly rated company. That's why I haven't chose to go to the extra expense of having it inspected do you think I'm making a mistake?

I found this video outstanding. I think it literally could save people from buying the wrong RV. The key point to me is go with a respected brand. Thor seems to have had many quality issues during covid where the other manufacturers did not. Plus basic Thor engineering, like of the batteries seems very poor. In retrospect with all the issues you and others have had with Thor, would it be worth it to spend 50% more to get a Winnebago or Coachmen? For many I bet it would.

Love your video. I can’t afford a lithium van but have a dog and concerned about leaving her in the van if I am in a warm area off the grid. Wondered if one of those portable lithium power packs would be a worthy addition, although it can’t run the A/C.

My first RV was a 1989 camper van purchased in 2000. I bought it from an elderly couple. The seller's wife said to "make sure all the stuff you put in the fridge was good and cold before you put it in there." That should have been a warning sign. I found out later that the fridge did zero cooling, it just ran. That was a small 3-way fridge that was going to cost me $1,000 to replace, which was probably a third of what I paid for the vehicle. I put in a cheap dorm fridge since I was only going short local distances to use it. The van had a little less than 120k miles on it. The first time I had it in for maintenance the mechanic said the engine's lower end was knocking, and the motor was worn out and due to fail at any time. Buyer beware.

Many dealers won't le you test drive without making an offer where I live at least. An experienced RVer will often know what they're looking at, but for a newbie they don't know what they don't know, so it really tough.

    • @paulcote9988

Unfortunately all manufacturers have issues some more than others, Thor does have issues but they happen to sell the most RV’s - hence more RV’s sold more problems it goes with being #1.

If you custom build out your RV, be warned that your INSURER may require an inspection beware they give you a custom quote, if they will insure it at all! And they will accept the value of installed equipment, but the cost of all the labor you put into it is ZERO in their eyes. They won't pay someone else to repeat your labor. As you said--call your insurance first.

RVers are truck and bus drivers. If you can not pay cash you are not entitled to own it because you don't. The bank owns it. All of mine are 20 to 30 years old when I pay cash for them. I can throw away my RV and loose less money that the first year of depreciation of a new unit.

No black tank, no solar (totally ineffective) no propane, no a/c on the roof, no wood (no mold down the road later) the most effective insulation package in the industry, true 4 season capability. Research 🙏🙏
