    The p170 sounds more warm and full . Nice to the ears . The sm 57 is bright on the high end , less full . I’m a fan of that warm sound . I like the p170

      I feel you, and am finding the sm57 less and less useful the longer I record.

      i'm glad to read your comment. i agree, i feel like the p170 might make a nice drum overhead for my budget drum recording setup.

      In the case of a wood flute, and perhaps some other very high content there is this accentuated highs thing that is perhaps a reason to not use SM57. Depends upon exact sound content. It's a subtle thing, but a bit less bump in very high part helps smooth out some flutes, piccolo, perhaps violin, some guitar, harpsichord, some saxes, double reeds.

    I agree, the SM57 won that contest. I think if I could only have one mic for the rest of my life I'd go with the 57 due to it's versatility... it can pretty much handle any instrument or voice you throw at it, whereas other mics just have one or two things they excel at.
    Great flute playing, by the way.

    thank you sir! 👍 imho, the 57 has more dynamics, being "dynamic" against condenser.... Really legendary the SM57 🎤

  • @crtune
    @crtune ปีที่แล้ว +2

    SM57 has some of the wind and breath noise accentuated. The condenser mic was more even and did not pull out the noise part of the wood flute. I love my SM57 and SM58, but I use them on voice and brass usually. I'm really considering the AKG for saxes, just because of this odd high frequency bump of the SM57 which is my usual go to mic. In the case of an instrument with wind and breath noise, it' slightly distracting to accentuate the blowing type sounds. Emphasize the critical instrument sounds as opposed to extreme high content.

      You are right, SM57 is too bright around 6.4 kHz. However P170 is too dull around the same region. I would reccommend trying Octava MK012.

    Nice playing ! I prefer the P170, it seems to me that there is more 'material' that can be EQ'ed with the P170 while the SM-57 is more of a dummy proof formula that will blend easily in a mix but wont stand out as much.

    Gee ... nice boomy bass voice ... makes me remember the Sound of Philadelphia ... nice. Well scripted and narrated well with an even pace. Nicely done. Works for me. This is how this type of A/B comparison should be done. JT

    Hi Trace. At the risk of seeming contradictory, I like the sound of the P170 better than the SM57. It seems sweeter to me and a bit smoother way up top. I'm wondering if you have any online place, like a forum or something like that where we could exchange ideas on all things flute/recording related? I'm sure that we could learn from each other! Thanks very much and as always, Cheers from DownUnder, Don

    • @CaneMajor
      @CaneMajor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Donald MacGregor No, not contrary at all. Microphones and recording can be some of the most subjective subjects out there. When I test a flute I compare it to how I hear it live. To me, the SM57 sounded as bright as I hear the flute unplugged. The 170 darkened it's tone a bit, making even a richer recording but to me not exactly how i hear the flute.
      The old Perception 170, the silver one, handles lower frequencies better than the 57. I'm expecting this one to as well.
      As far as sharing ideas. I'm sure there are plenty of groups and forums in Facebook. Cheers!

      They’re both good in their own unique ways. Depending on the song, one will fit better than the other...or perhaps either will work. The final mix will be the judge

    Very nice review, although I do have a problem with my AKG P170, it only records on the left side... Nothing comes out of my right speaker, do you have any clue of what could be the problem?

    • @CaneMajor
      @CaneMajor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of recording software are you using? You have to record in mono if you are just using one microphone. You have your software set to record in stereo. That's why you only hear one speaker.

    Hello, Trace! Please, share us your wisdom - how do you manage to get such a clean, loud and clear signal with your gear? Because i have same exact microphone (AKG) and preamplifier/mixer (Behringer) as you, but get a lot of hiss in my signal. What am i doing wrong? Do you use any hiss removal gear or plugins in your signal chain? Many thanks!
