Damn, the 250€ AKG sounded incredibely! They're probably the best mics at an affordable price!

I like this kind of demo by just showing the close mic first then mix the overhead later so that we can know how the cymbal bleed going in to the close mic and then we get how each of individual close mic sounds like.

Great video, thanks! If money were no object it would be difficult to go past the Earthworks kit. In my world, Sennheiser seems to do a great job.
I’ve found that while sure is a very reliable product, it’s sound caters to a certain frequency range. And it’s right down the middle. To contrast. Senhieser really opens up the higher and lower frequencies for a much more crisp playback.
That ride is delicious!
Sontronics sound amazing. My favorite kit was the Sennheiser 900 but I think I would use other overheads. Thanks for this great video.

I'm liking the clarity of the Sontronics! Seems to be the best bang for your buck. Of course the Earthworks are amazing, but that price tag 😮💨
If you're playing live, Lewitt bring higher quality and sound. Yes it's mid range but worth it. Now lower end mics are good for small clubs because much if the tone will be carried through the wall acoustic.

Darn, you should've volume matched the samples. Obviously, a condenser set will be louder and thus sound substantially better. You need to turn the volume down when listening to Sontronics set or other set comprised of mostly condensers. But thank you for the comparison, very useful!
Sontronics feels like a live gig and make me vibe. Nice atack, "airy", dirty... I would use it in rock, punk or rap. Lewitt is like a "upgraded version". More sensitivity, more elegant, not so "airy".
Sennheiser low end control feels amazing.

I'm trying to choose between the AKG and beyerdynamic TG pro M. The akg sounds a bit muffled to my ears. I really liked the beyerdynamic set except for the boundary kick mic, which seemed to be kind of distorted. Maybe I should get the beyerdynamic and supplement it with another kick mic and blend the two? What do you say Simon? Help me out here Thomann!

I really liked the lewitt kits . My kit has 6.35 mm l&r out so no mics required, now if I could only figure out how to trigger the cowbell??? I hear it when I plug in the kick pad but 🤷🏽♂️ where it’s accessed, the previous owners probably lost it 🤣.

Id go with the Sennheiser 900 but add the Audix DP8 kick mic, it has a nice rounded low end

The big positive point for Earthworks mics is that they provide a very authentic and honest sound. In the direct comparison with the Audix mics you can hear the difference very good. I would choose between Audix and Earthworks ✌ But the Lewitt mics sound awesome for that price....

The Sontronic sound like really expensive ones but have a great price. Earthworks also great, like the pricetag... but the Audix set also does a great job. Thanks a lot for the comparison, must have been a ton of work to set all these mics up! :)

True 😂 they sound great.
The problem nobody has mentioned with the Sontronic is that they are all condenser mics. So you can hear even on the close mics only clip, the hi hat rejection on the snare mic is basically non-existent. Which is fine for live sound but for recording, cymbal bleed into close mics is a pain.
BeyerDynamic got my attention.
In my experience Beyerdynamic makes only high quality good sounding mics and I have quite a few now.

Should I buy a lower priced microphone set or just shoot for a Yamaha EAD10?
It depends on what you'd like to achieve. With a mic set you have full control on every single drum signal you're going to record. With the EAD 10 you don't have that but it's very easy to record drums fast with a pretty good overall sound plus the extra trigger and effects functions. //Simon

Earthworks is the best. However, Lewitt has a great sound and I need it for 7 piece kit. So, Lewitt fits great sound, good price...
Shure PGA DRUMKIT 7 did it for me ….
The Sennheiser 900 wins it for me, but I would be more than satisfied with the neutral and airy sounding AKG, which has a fine balanced and controlled sound. They do lack some nuances in comparison to Sennheiser 900but for most work they offer all you need is what I hear through my Sony MDR-7506 headphones.

My guess is that they didn't use any EQ or compressor just the raw sound
also no gate at all, You can hear the floor toms ringing.

man the budget one is not that bad, its sound muddy tho but can be fixed by eqing the high end.... anw fill on 2.50 its sick... hope someone can transcribe it or the sticking pattern... nice videoo!

What's the main difference between the Beyerdynamic Pro M and the Pro L??
The toms/snare mics only. The TG35s are about $90 each, and the TG57s and 58s are $150 each, and it comes with an expandable case. The 57s and 58s take up a lot less space, I think they sound great. Just to note though, the Pro M in the VIDEO is mislabeled, it's x4 TG35s and x2 TG53s, not the other way around as shown in the image.

It‘s a good video but remeber that they used a DW kit with top-of-the-line Zildjians to record which makes recording easier because you don‘t have to edit as much as with lower standard drums or cymbals. Also you should consider that the drums where recorded in a top noch studio which was probably equipped by a technician and has high quality dampening materials.
Still it is a good overfiew for people who have to make a compromise between gear and purse.

Interesting how people like the Sontronics. If you turn that part down to match the volume of the other mics, you'll hear they are just OK...boomy and a lack of definition. Earthworks sounds most realistic, maybe too clinical.

Whoever was in charge of showing how many of each mic you get in the set was WAY off...
2200€ and it sounded like shit, only one kit was crisp clear, the rest sounded like an mp3 file in 56kbps
