  • Hope you guys enjoy my real life test of the Strikemaster 40V Electric auger. I was beyond impressed by the performance of this beast. Safe to say the gas auger won’t be coming out anytime soon.

    I have one of these augers, have never killed the battery and am super impressed with it. it does jam in the bottom of the hole when trying to punch through the bottom of the ice layer occasionally, but all in all I like it a lot more than my old jiffy which weighs about 40 pounds.great video Jay!

    Just a couple days ago I had the opportunity to try a Strikemaster 40v for the first time on Pelican Lake. 1 battery cut probably 25 holes through 3 feet of clear ice (no snow, all gone by now). I was beyond impressed. It cut smoothly with tons of torque through that 3 feet of ice in probably just under 20 seconds. I'm still literally SMACKING MYSELF for getting a Jiffy e6 lightning instead of the strikemaster to save 50 bucks. I might just have to get a strikemaster anyway next winter.

    Great video! I had the opportunity to borrow an electric auger last year ( different brand/same concept) and was impressed by all the stuff you mentioned. The one thing you touched on was reverse and that to me was one of the extra cool things that made the electric above a gas auger because when you use reverse it actually evacuated the slush down the hole and under the ice so no initial scooping=rapid line drop!!! I am back to gas auger ( can’t afford electric) but only use husky pre-mix and starts first pull!

    Great review! Rewatching as I decide which unit I want to purchase. Trying to decide between 24V unit and 40V unit. Down here in MI, I believe that I can probably live with the 24v. unit, particularly for the early season, when we have less than 10 inches many years.

    I’ve used a earthquake post hole digger with a jiffy 8” blade for 5 years. I have had to have it tuned up twice so far, and I have to keep the motor warm by keeping it out of the wind while I’m out, but it’s been ok. The battery version looks great, I can’t see spending near $500 on one though, thanks for the video!

      ya, i feel ya with the hand auger. Three ft of black ice with an inline handle is no joke. Shoulder is dead after a couple holes (tho i need breaks during the drilling process). Hoping to make an offset handle for it one of these days

    • @zone4garlicfarm
      @zone4garlicfarm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ilikerealflight I have drilled hundreds of holes through 3+ feet of ice with a 6" Nils hand auger. The Nils cutting head with the offset handles make it easy work. I mostly drill with a Strikemaster 40 volt but if that doesn't work out over the long term I will hand crank a sharp Nils before I go back to a gas auger.

    Great video Jay. Don't worry about the math and conversions, there are apps for that! Lots of good info in the comments. I'm thinking of an Ion or Trophy Strike since their cutting heads are better for re-drilling holes in a permie. Tried using my Jiffy 8" with a Milwaukee Fuel but it has a hard time cutting just before punching through.

    I know that the Eskimo 40CC has been out for awhile and is not as good as the electric ones but you should do a video on it. I use it and can probably drill 100 holes if not more on a 1 lb propane tank and I keep it outside in -20 degrees and it fires right up. Of course it's not as quick and smooth cutting as an electric auger but I think it has its benefits

    Hey Jay. Question for you. How much downward pressure are you using with the auger? Im having trouble with mine stalling out every hole I drill, when its just about to break through the bottom of the ice. Some say you HAVE to let gravity push it down and if you put too much pressure itll stall it out. Have you noticed this at all? Im not buying this theory. Thanks!

    • @JaySiemens
      @JaySiemens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Not sure how to answer this accurately. I would say that only a little pressure should be needed. Might depend on your ice conditions as well though. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

    Everyone used to have gas augers, but electrics have really taken over. Now you hear a guy running a loud old dull gas augers and think “what’s this guys problem?!”

    Those are 799.00 here in Ontario. 849.00 for the ION auger. If it was 520 here also I'd buy one. But my 10 year old eskimo keeps on going.

    It is very bad to freeze these batteries as the AA sized cells inside will burst. The battery life will get better as it cycles in to full life. They do not have full running time until they are broke in. Also the battery is not warrantied again freezing, you stupid if you let the battery freeze...LOL You should try to keep the battery warm , do not leave in the truck over night or leave mounted to the power head when not drilling. Try and keep it warm in shanty or pocket when not in use.

    FYI: (-13°C × 9/5) + 32 = 8.6°F
    Sad how the temp expressed in "F" works HUGELY better for fishermen. After ice out - as little as a 1 degree (F) change in water temps helps locate active fish.

    The pistol bit is dangerous. Doesn’t have a center spike. So on glare ice it can kick out easy and it’s sharp. Watch your feet.
