Man i feel for caps fans, having to watch there captain and legendary player cherry picking last night and not engaging in puck battles what so ever. Jeez, i miss that old ovechkin, even in 2014 when the rangers beat them ovi still had a couple beautiful goals
Ovi's almost 40, he's already won a Cup, the Caps barely made it into the playoffs and their next Cup win will happen long after Ovi is retired, the Rangers have a very deep team that was almost 25 points better during the regular season and playoff goals don't count towards Gretzky's record. Ovi was checked out mentally before the puck was dropped in Game 1.
Yea so what that doesn't mean you get to not try the entire series
people like you who say this make me hate oven chicken even more. ovi didnt even have a good year. minus his two 10 game goal streaks against basement teams he had 10 goals in the remaing 60 games and finished with a -22 and will retire a minus player which is honestly incredible. all he is doing is lettng the team suffer for his personal chase. they were lucky philly fell apart cuz they should have been their. if your not willing to chase the cup you dont deserve to be known as the top scorer you need to retire. now get on the golf course.

At this stage of Ovechkins career, he'll be 39 in September, he's got his Ring and now hes gunning for Gretzkys record. He has 2 years left on his contract and i think he will do it.
Even if he does, Gretzky was already retired by this age.
It was the first season in his career where he fell below a point a game pace. Hit 0.9ppg and decided to hang em up.
Have more respect for that.
That being said Gretzky was a playmaker. He had nearly 2000 assists. Another 42 goals by Ovi to beat Gretzky 894 isn't really even coming close to what Gretzky did. Gretzky still scored nearly twice the points as Ovi.
I don't really get chasing his record.
It's kinds like celebrating Brayden Point for having 46 goals this year to Sidney Crosby's 42 and thinking that somehow makes them comparable players.
Hate seeing great players hang around too long. People end up remembering how bad they were when they went out. Like Jagr's embarrassing end to his career with the Flames. It was just painful to watch.

Bad take, Ovi cares a ton, and puts in effort. The guy is 38 years old, he’s slowing down. And Kreider, one of the fastest players in the league, was all over Ovi the whole series. Ovi isn’t like the soft crybaby leafs at all.

Wish he’d retire and leave being satisfied with a superstar career. If he can’t skate hard for entire game and has to coast it for a couple seasons just so he can hang in to break a record then…? Will the excitement of the record be the same and worth it if he limped in to the last 100 goals of it?

Jagr is old and was still producing at ovis age. Ovi body type at his age needs to train better and have a better diet plan. He isn’t young anymore where he can get away with the eating and training habits as before. He needs to adapt and change things up when getting older.

I feel its a result of aging, stress, and just overall being man on man covered by a player the entire game. You also have to keep in mind the Ukraine Russia situation. Im not saying its the sole reason for his drop in play, but it could adding on. Im not defending his bad play during the playoffs even Ovechkin himself said he played poorly. This is only my take and Im open to discussing it
