Such incredible detail. It's truly incredible. It's wonderful to see these churches so well preserved. Of all the European churches I've ever seen, these are the most unusual.
They're in such great condition, and I think having a guide in places really helps too as you can pick out the important people and scenes. Some are obvious (eg the Crucifixion), but some are really unusual!
I visited all of these churches in October 2017 and it was such a great experience. It's amazing that the paintings have lasted this long! When I was there, I had special permission to actually record and photograph inside the churches too which was quite the treat as they strictly forbid it most the time.
Thanks as always for helping me get my geek on with your heritage videos! I would love to come join you one day to explore some of the painted churches and castles in Europe. The paintings on the exterior on the 2nd monastery are so amazing, must be awesome in person.
Hoping to hit up Romania towards the end of 2019. Looks more like a fortress in parts. The painting on the churches are amazing. I love that you feature these obscure world heritage sites
The churches are all located within monasteries which were often quite heavily fortified! Remember that the Muslim Ottoman Turks were among their closest neighbours, so protection was necessary some of the time :) And yes - the Journey has certainly taken us to some unusual places!
How unusual! I've never seen anything like that! They must spend a lot of time maintaining them because you'd think those colours out in the open would certainly fade over time, especially the reds
We have just got back from Bucharest, wished we had more time to travel around the rest of Romania. We did visit a couple of the Orthodox churches and they are quite elaborate but didn't see anything like these.
I think it's quite a constant challenge - certainly on some of them it was obvious the sunny side was much more faded than the shaded side. The roof eaves often hang over quite a bit as well which provides extra protection.
These were painted biblical scenes. In those days the peasant population was largely illiterate but their visual sense was highly developed. The people could understand (most of) the stories by studying the pictures.

They certainly are! It made for a very nice change after two years of Catholic cathedrals and monasteries 😂
Simply stunning. I have never seen anything like before. Wow...usually you see these frescos on the inside...this is amazing!!!
Yeah, they're really beautiful and well-done! Highly recommend visiting if you get the chance.
These are stunning. I can see why you were impressed. Amazing that they are so vibrant after all this time.

Wonderful churches, I heard a lot about them already and I think it's already time for a visit! :) Video is perfect as well!
Thank you! They are definitely fantastic churches and highly worth visiting I think!

Oh wow, lucky you! You might've noticed I had no interior footage which was a bit of a shame. What's your secret? Nobody ever replies to my emails 😂

Yeah it's just incredible to see in front of you! That huge panel showing the siege of Constantinople was definitely one of my favourites too!

What unique looking churches! I've seen my fair share of churches in Europe and these are definitely fascinating.
Yeah, they're definitely among the most unique we've seen so far! Thanks for watching 👍
Lovely video - I'm heading to Suceava in a few weeks so will be looking at heading to the painted monasteries

We did see a lot of orthodox churches while we were in Romania/Bulgaria/Greece, but these were definitely one of the high points!
I have never seen monuments painted in such a way from outside. Usually, such paintings are inside the building. Wonder how do they maintain them.
