The funny thing is that you guys did everything in reverse order: Usually when about to eat you take a shot of brandy to get you warmed up and prepare to burn all the fat from the meal, we say a shot of palinca/rachiu is ment to open up the appetite, then you eat the sarmale (which are either pickled cabbage or pickled grapevine leaves) and the polenta is not ment as a standalone meal, here we eat everything on either bread or polenta (is the old traditional way) usually if we see someone just eat their meal with no bread or not even polenta is really weird, and then at the end once the sarmale countered the burn from the brandy you eat the dessert which is the papanași. Oh well guess now you will have to do it all over again:)

@@JordanandEmily Yeah, papanasi is plural. Singular would be papanas. But the standard portion of papanasi is 2. To get only one would be half a portion. Usually, people get one portion, and they will share. 95% of all restaurants in Romania will serve 2 papanasi when you order one portion. It's just the way it is. It's not a language barrier. @@JordanandEmily Good question, maybe because when we make them we usually fry two of them in the pan. Also, the term itself is a plural, the singular would be "1 papanaş". Hey guys ! Aussies are some of my favorite people ! So , 1 by 1 - Papanasi sometime are 2 to a serving , you should have asked in advance . And Cipaku is right , you started in reverse . You have to work out a hunger when you want to eat in Romania . Although we have to admit that Serbians are eating larger qty than us . A steak in Belgrade is around 400 grams ( 0.4 kg :-) ) . Polenta is not made in Romania from corn flour , this is a misconception done by many foreigners . Is made from grinded corn , which is not same thing . Grinded coffee is not coffee flour :-) That's why is yellowish . Regarding sour cream to top of sarmale , it can be too greasy sometime. I prefer 10% fat yoghurt , is "cutting "the pork meat in sarmale , but , well , I'm from Constanta , different tastes 🙂
After SARMALE (two kind of sarmale: cabagge leaves or vine leaves-the best) try ARDEI UMPLUTI (stuffed peppers) with fresh green chili peppers. Is an amaizing dish. Single condition to drink a TZUICA/PALINCA before...

We are planning on travelling Europe ourselves for a year - or like you, till the money runs out… I like how you have added the money that you spend at the end of each video. Hello! Thanks so much for following! And the short answer is yes 😄 we have all the numbers for every cent we've spent but are just figuring out the best way to show it! Stay tuned! 😃 if theres anything you want to know specifically we are more than happy to answer that in the comments too!
Glad you liked our food. But as a Romanian, I would eat heavy pork based dishes during the cold weather, during summer we eat a lot of lighter meals, eggplant dip, light soups.
it seems that the biggest TH-camr in America has done studies about Romanian food and it is the tastiest food in the world the biggest TH-camr named Mark Wiens
I happen to be married to a Romanian. Usually an order of Papanasi is 2, so they probably split them on 2 plates. Were you actually charged for 2 orders?
Polenta you don't judge it individually... it's like you'd have an oppinion about the white rice only in asian cooking. You are supposed to construct every single bite with a part of polenta and a part of the cabbage roll. Romanian can eat polenta with almost anything, even soup... In this sense it is seen more like a bread replacement, or noodles, or rice... it's carbs after all :-)
My advice: have sarmale with Romanian bread. Mamaliga is not meant to be eaten by itself, and even we, at home, prefer to serve sarmale with plain bread and (Romanian - I couldn’t stress this more) sourcream. Another word of advice: mamaliga is best prepared at home, with lots of other stuff in it.
We love sour cream and would honestly have it with most things! I think we need to try a few different places and options to get a real sense of Romanian food!
I guess that you did not know that a portion of papanasi in romania is always made of 2 donuts. so what you bought there was just a portion split for 2 people.
hi, if you two come can giuoc town? you can buy for me 1 cooffe tree ( 15000vn/ 1 tree), 1 green tea tree ( 35000vnd/1 tree)? i want grown tree at home? in gardent small?thanks
The forest fruit liqueur that you drank, is not that special. Its simple plum brandy poured over a bottle half filled with forest fruits and some sugar. after 2, 3 month, fruits start to disintegrate inside, sugar its diluted, and that's all.
@@JordanandEmily Possible for the recipe for brandy. Romanians dont make hard liqueurs from cereals. NEVER. Also brandy its something else, distilled wine. What you guys drink, its called Palinca ,Tuica or Horinca. If you vizit Transilvania, Maramures or Moldova , its called diffrent. Basically its the same thing, but diffrent fruits used. From what I heard, there is a guy, very passionate about this craft, who supplies Royal House from UK with such treats.
Polenta is not meant to be eaten alone. Its meant to be eaten together with other foods, as a replacement for bread. Alone it doesn't taste much but bread alone also doesnt taste much... together with sarmale though.... they are a unseparable. You cannot eat sarmale without polenta.... its like eating mici without mustard! A crime against humanity! 😂😂😂
We are genuinely upset we didnt know this when we were eating it 😄 Makes a lot of sense that it's supposed to be eaten with other things. Next time we come to Romania we will definitely do it properly!
And speaking of sarmale , you tried in wrong region. Transylvanians will hate me , but they don't know what they do , so they will be forgiven. My grandmother was from Arges and moved to Dobrogea as a kid. She was later paid to cook sarmale for weddings , like 200-300 servings , so you imagine they did not pay her for nothing. My father is cooking sarmale by her recipe ( she passed away long time ago ) and everybody , I mean everybody , that tasted my father's sarmale said they are the best they ever have ever ate.
First of all, Papanasi are not doughnuts. The dough from which they are prepared contains sweet cheese, sour cream does not mean that it is sour like a lemon, it is only slightly fermented and has natural bacteria. A PORTION of Papanasi means 2 pieces. MAMALIGA is never eaten by it self , Italians put cheese or something in it, Sarmalele are not an easy kind of food, and in most houses they are eaten with onions, hot peppers and sour cream of your choice, no, it does not resemble anything VIETNAMESE .
Thanks for watching! What's your favourite Romanian food?!

After SARMALE (two kind of sarmale: cabagge leaves or vine leaves-the best) try ARDEI UMPLUTI (stuffed peppers) with fresh green chili peppers. Is an amaizing dish. Single condition to drink a TZUICA/PALINCA before...
Stuffed peppers spund awesome. We will add it to the list for next time! We've not heard of Tzuica before! Is it alcoholic?
@@JordanandEmily Yes.. it is. Țuica in Romania is (kinda) like what Vodka is for russian people 😅
You got a new follower! Keep it up🎉
Thank you so much!! ❤️
winter season = sarmale season in romania ^^ its meat with rice stuffed into a pickled cabbage leaf :P u top that off with a hunk of smoked pork meat while it boils and u have magic ^^
Oh gosh - sounds so perfect!! I can't even imagine how warming it would be on a winters day ☺️
Sighisoara is such a cute city. Hope you had fun in Romania! ✌🤙
A beautiful city with Beautiful animals and food! haha We had the best time in Romania, always thinking about a return trip!
My beautiful old town! I hope you like it.
We LOVED it! Such a stunning town 😍
I stayed at the guy with the brandy a few years back. He also has rooms for rent in that house. Really nice place. Being a Romanian living in Romania, I'm sure to visit him again some time in the future. Nice videos, guys!
Thats so great! He was super nice and his brandy was simply amazing 😄 we will be returning when we come back to Romania!
🤩frumoasă prezentare 👍
Thank you! 😊
The polenta it's not meant to be eaten by itself - it's bread correspondent made by corn. It is meant to be eaten with the cabbage rolls. :)
Haha lesson learned the hard way 😞 😄
Hello! We are following your journey from
Perth WA and are enjoying your videos 💕. We are planning on travelling Europe ourselves for a year - or like you, till the money runs out… I like how you have added the money that you spend at the end of each video. Any chance of a break down of the costs e.g how much of your spend is accommodation, or food, or car hire?
We need to get back to Romania in all the seasons to try a little bit of everything!
Salutare mă bucur că vă place țara mea ❤
We love it! ❤️
Bravo ragazzi.
😊😊
The "Papanasi" you guys had, usually came 2 in one plate, so they split it for you, one each. 🙂
We so didn't realise this was a thing - love it though!
Cute cats 🐈⬛ 🐈
So cute! we never got tired of them 😆
it seems that the biggest TH-camr in America has done studies about Romanian food and it is the tastiest food in the world the biggest TH-camr named Mark Wiens
Love Mark! And Romanian food is incredible!
How you do drive with wrong side steering wheel here in Romania? :)
He actually did amazing! Even with the car being a manual 😅
Sarmalele se mananca cu mamaliga inpreună .Mici se chiama acel carnat mic se maninca cu paine si mustar
The food is amazing!!!
and the most appreciated food in Romania according to Mark the biggest TH-camr is traditional food
Love this!
I happen to be married to a Romanian. Usually an order of Papanasi is 2, so they probably split them on 2 plates. Were you actually charged for 2 orders?
no we weren't! we were sooooo confused about this whole thing until the video posted 😅
Polenta you don't judge it individually... it's like you'd have an oppinion about the white rice only in asian cooking. You are supposed to construct every single bite with a part of polenta and a part of the cabbage roll. Romanian can eat polenta with almost anything, even soup... In this sense it is seen more like a bread replacement, or noodles, or rice... it's carbs after all :-)
Ooh - that makes more sense! Thanks for letting us know
1 portion of papanasi consists of 2 pieces. So you ordered 1 portion, they just split the portion on 2 plates for you.
Makes a lot of sense 😄
Welcome to my Hometown.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
😄 we saw the house you were born in! Nice corner house, congrats 👏
@@JordanandEmily Long Time ago 🤗
They also have room to rent. I stay few years ago.
That would have been pretty cool, so close to all that history!
You must try Savarina,it's the best dessert
OMG how are we only hearing about this now!! that looks incredible!!
I guess that you did not know that a portion of papanasi in romania is always made of 2 donuts. so what you bought there was just a portion split for 2 people.
We only learnt after 😄 really not complaining though, they were incredible!!
Papanasi always comes in two i think
I think you're right!
we got a bit confused
romanian food yummii
So good!
That.s my land you make me hungry i mist my land Greeting from Autria
How good is the food!
Is Austrian food good? We haven't made it there yet!
❤
❤️❤️
They ordered one mic :)))
Haha our mistake!
Did no one tell you you eat mici with hands not with fork and knife? 😂
Really?!
@@JordanandEmily no kidding, you’d get laughed at in 99% of Romania. 😄
hi, if you two come can giuoc town? you can buy for me 1 cooffe tree ( 15000vn/ 1 tree), 1 green tea tree ( 35000vnd/1 tree)? i want grown tree at home? in gardent small?thanks
That's a great deal!

I do not find expensive 5 euro is home made desert and elaborated
I see!
The forest fruit liqueur that you drank, is not that special. Its simple plum brandy poured over a bottle half filled with forest fruits and some sugar. after 2, 3 month, fruits start to disintegrate inside, sugar its diluted, and that's all.
really? he made it seem like the recipe was hundreds of years old!
@@andreipascal7967 ooohhhhh i see - ges a bit confusing with all the different types and names! haha
We are genuinely upset we didnt know this when we were eating it 😄
Makes a lot of sense that it's supposed to be eaten with other things. Next time we come to Romania we will definitely do it properly!
That papanasi has 3k calories 😂😂that's why taste that good 😂😂
Hahaha 😄 that'll do it!!
Pretty good videos. Jealous of your lifestyle.
Thanks for the compliment!
😄
