So as a new thing I'm going to start listing corrections to the video in a pinned comment (because we can't have annotations - no - they'd be useful). I'll be adding on more as more comes to light.

Some facts about the "Independence war" as we call it in Spain:
1. The french conquest almost every part of the Peninsula, but the only cities that they never conquerer in Spain were Cádiz and Lion´s Island (nowdays called San Fernando, because of Ferdinand VII).It resulted in a 2 year siege, finished with the retreat of the french troups.
2.In Cádiz and Leon´s Island, was proclamed during the siege the first spanish constitution, a very liberal one. But when Ferdinand VII comeback to the throne, he denied to sign it and executed every one who had the same ideology than the constitution. (Called "La Pepa")

One does not simply invade Portugal , the Spanish knew it , but the French had to learn it too.

I've recently run into some documents about my family that relate to this conflict, while I was searching on the Military Archives of Portugal. Apparently my 6th great-grandfather volunteered, during the Peninsular War, along with his elder brother to join the Portuguese Army, that at the time was under the command of the British Marshal William Beresford. He and his brother volunteered on the 18th of April 1809, being him 16 years old. They were incorporated into an Infantry Regiment, and basically that's all that I discovered, so I dont know if they participated in any of the battles mentioned in the video. However, because of another document that I found on the Archive, I know that my 6th great-grandfather gave entrance in Elvas's Hospital, in May 1809, so one month after volunteering. However the document doesn't specify what injury it was, neither the circunstances in which he got that injury. Either way, it was pretty neat having discovered this information, that no one in my family knew about.
LONG LIVE THE ARCHIVES📜, ("the guardians of history") those buildings full of old documents and dust, which have through the generations saved and kept tons of old documents. Documents that without them, we couldn't tell history.

My question is why would Napoleon think Spain would be easy?! Because they had a bad government..so what...Spain had a larger empire than the British and French Empires combined at the time. No one handed Spain their massive overseas empire, they won it through wars fighting off Europeans wanting a piece of the empire and natives alike. The Spanish consistently defeated English, Dutch, Portuguese and French all over the Americas, not to mention powerful Native states like the Aztecs, Incas, Mayan, and the warriors of the Philippines. Spanish people had to be warriors themselves, and they proved to be so in the Peninsular War. Napoleon completely underestimated the Spanish people, and completely overestimated the French forces. Just another of many bad decisions made by Napoleon. Foolish to believe that Spain would be easy.

A very overlooked campaign, Napoleon had over 300,000 men tied down in Spain, when you throw that into the mix of the rest of his Russian invasion force that would have swelled his army to up to 900,000 troops.

Agreed. The Grand Armee was not well supported logistically so a bigger army would have had a harder time. And hastened Napoleon's defeat.

Portugal has been allies with England/Britain now for about 700 years. Half of my family is born in that small Iberian Country.
And in payment for that, GB wanted to invade and stay with the Azores in WWII. The USA did not want to collaborate in the invasion of a neutral country and that is why GB did not. The only country that GB considers as a friend is the USA. The poor Portuguese believe that the British are their friends. LOL.
Actually we already knew that..that's why after the war we stopped renting the military base In azores to the uk and decided to rent it only to the united states. Obviously this is no longer the case i think but trust me we are well aware that the british are not always our friends. Which is kind of a shame.
@@jaxric8518 So you are only now realising that we and the French have basically just been using the Iberian nations as proxies in our disputes across the 17th and 18th centuries? And to be honest I would say we did quite a good job at preventing a territorial union though as whilst We and the French were normally bitter enemies we almost always fought side by side against a united Iberia or any other powerful outside threat for that matter.
Jax Ric tbh here in Portugal that is true aswell, the relationship between the two nations and both people is pretty healthy, a lot of portuguese spend vacation in spain and vice versa, i have massive respect for the neighbour country, unfortunately now times are tough, all I can wish is good luck to the people of spain fighting this new “enemy”

Thanks to the stories of Richard Sharpe, I know all about the heroics of the combined Anglo-Portuguese army, especially regarding the Portuguese cazadores.

Also, the English allies were worst than the french itself..... that's why people still today say "para inglês ver" because they rape, plunder and destroy as much as the French troops when they are called to help. Also, Portugal was fighting because of England, so England was not there to help but to ensure Portugal didn't comply with the embargo.... England was never there to help Portugal but to make usage of the alliance. Portugal was the only one respecting the alliance in the first place.
In Portugal the King fled to Brazil but every Portuguese men or women Young or old fought for there country until the British came to help

As a firm history buff, who’s favourite period of history is the Napoleonic era a subject I’ve loved to study for over fifty years I thought this short documentary on the Peninsular war was brilliant & really well done. I’m definitely going to give a thumbs up & subscribe. I can’t wait to spend a few hours watching some more of these downloads, I think I’ve found a TH-cam Gem!

Hello there! Although i'm really proud of wathcing a video made by you about The Peninsular War (A.K.A. Spanish Independence War) i must confess i expected a bit more about the Spanish forces on it ... Guerrillas had a key role but we must not forget about General Castaños or General Álava (i can't speak about portuguese due to my ignorance on the subject) and the many spanish regular army forces who fought during the war (e.g: Spanish Royal Guards on the Battle at La Albuera).
Either way, thanks a lot for taking the time to make these wonderful videos ;)
My grandfather(x5) was from Luxembourg and fought for France at the Battle of Rolica. He was captured and spent many years on a prison ship that was anchored in Plymouth Harbor.

I have to begin by saying that I love the videos. However, I would love to see you do a video on either the Diplomatic Revolution or the War of Austrian/Spanish Succession (tbh while they're separate wars, they kinda feed each other).
As a Souvenir Napoleonien's member, with 10 years of study in this subject, I have to tell you there are some little mistakes, but... Hey! This video is still pretty damn good!

Most people don't even know this happend yet alone it was considerd "the last indian war". With what can be called genocide these days anywhere from 800,000 to 2 million Filipinos were killed in that war. If you Include the amount of people who died from the various plagues like Cholera during and just right after the war the amount of total deaths during that time period is horrific. For a country that had a possible population just prior to the war of around 8 million to lose a quarter and possibly near half in ten years is absolutly horrific.
And why do the general public know anything about this?
Diggity Dank Infected wounds caused during war count as being killed by disease, and are listed among the casualty count as the disease was directly caused by the fighting. The Spanish Flu on the other hand had nothing to do with the fighting and was not caused by it, and therefore is not included in the casualties of WWI. Besides, most deaths from it occurred after the war was over.

Technically there was no invasion; by May 1808, they were allies and the French were already there.
@@jorge6207 Yeah, the correct way of putting would be "if France didn't betray Spain", as they just grabbed Spain with the troops they had there, betraying their allies and provoking the Spanish into pretty much inventing Guerrilla Warfare and becoming the nightmare of French soldiers. Bad move.

Although maybe a bit off topic, I do think that Brazil's independance should've been stated as a major aftermath as the Portuguese royal family moved there and even made Rio de Janeiro the capital of Portugal. Or maybe just the history of Pedro IV of Portugal, I of Brazil - the Portuguese civil war - is worth a video of itself. Great video though :)
We shouldn't have even tried to make Brasil a colony again... It was pretty damn alright as an official kigdom of the Portuguese Empire.
Before that, Portugal went on to conquer what is today Uruguay, thus flipping the Spanish for their part in the 1807 invasion.

The Peninsular war also saw some of the bloodiest sieges in the era, the two sieges of Zaragoza. They were so costly for the french, that when they finally took the city, having killed great portion of the population (only 15k survived from a population of 55k) and almost destroying all the city, the french Mariscal Jean Lannes said "This is terrible. This victory is sad."
Do a video about the conquest of Algeria by the monarchy that followed Napoleon. Great video as usual keep the good work.
This is surprisingly familiar history. One can always recommend the Sharpe series, written and movies, for semi-factual account, and rather good at that. One of the the few roles, where Sean Bean didn't die. Sharpe was hanged... But not really.
This was the front during the napoleonic wars which was in my opinion the decisive front. This costs Napoleon around 250.000 soldiers. it caused overstretching his army and his front lines.

You should have mentioned the Spanish constitution of 1812 and more stuff on the Spanish guerrillas. That stuff is vital to the war and to Spanish history. Great video nontheless.

Damn France was the 1800s version of 1900s Germany. Take on multiple enemies at once, win plenty and annex loads of lands, but eventually lose when MANY countries team up as the only way to beat you.

To be honest the Napolinic wars is one where pretty much everyone fought well. France, Britain, Russia, Portugal, the Spanish people, the Germanic states, Austria, Sweden. It's why it's so fun, there is so little toxic politics around it unlike everything else in modern times and even stuff beforehand. Even with the Roman Empire you have Italian nationalist and for some reason some Salty Turks claiming that Attila (the Hunic genocide poster boy of Mongolian decent) was Turkish.

The victory against Napoleon's army is divided into 4 essential factors. One, two, or three factors are not enough to win the war against Napoleon.
- Spanish guerrillas and Spanish armies, which kept the French harassed, cutting off the lines of communication and supply, and winning dozens of battles against the French. The French were static in the territory, so as not to lose regions. Murat complained that they couldn't make a really operational offensive to defeat the small British army.
-Napoléon was in Moscow. After the disaster in Russia, all of Europe had rebelled against France. Then Napoleon could not make a second counteroffensive on the peninsula (surely successful, because he was a strategy genius).
-The British army was very small, 40000-70000 soldiers (France 200000-300000, Spain 400000 guerrillas y soldiers). Almost all british victories are in Portugal, with the help of Portugal and Spain. But the British were also an important contribution to unite all armies, in the final offensive, when the French were in retreat.
-The Spanish viceroyalty in America was in the war of independence, since 1810 and it was not possible to bring troops from America here.
Although many Americans participated.
Napoleon was not a genius, he just had more men and more guns than anyone and he could outgun the enemy, but there is no way Napoleon was a strategic genius. And why would Napoleon think Spain would be easy?! Because they had a bad government..so what...Spain had a larger empire than the British and French Empires combined at the time. No one handed Spain their massive overseas empire, they won it through wars fighting off Europeans wanting a piece of the empire and natives alike. The Spanish consistently defeated English, Dutch, Portuguese and French all over the Americas, not to mention powerful Native states like the Aztecs, Incas, Mayan, and the warriors of the Philippines. Spanish people had to be warriors themselves, and they proved to be so in the Peninsular War. Napoleon completely underestimated the Spanish people, and completely overestimated the French forces. Just another of many bad decisions made by Napoleon. Foolish to believe that Spain would be easy.

That was a milestone across Europe, because the Austrian, Prussian, Russian and British empires had not won a land battle against a Napoleon army in 15 years. But Napoleon was a genius, and a cruel war of guerrillas and battles began here, where 300,000 French soldiers, half a million Spaniards, and only 35,000 British died. It is easy to understand that the battles between the Spanish and the French were more numerous, and that the Spanish guerrillas forced the French to leave many troops stationed in the most important cities, and that is why the French (who had the best army in Europe) could not send a large army to Portugal (270,000 soldiers) to defeat the small English army, which had 70,000 soldiers, half Portuguese. I don't want to say that the English and Portuguese help was not important, but the Spanish sacrifice was similar to what the Russians made to win WW2. @@lsatep You are quite right in what you say about the Spanish empire. About Napoleon, for me he was a genius of strategy. I have studied almost all of Napoleon's battles, in 800-page books that I had to read twice, to the amazement that Napoleon's intelligence was capable of doing to sometimes win several empires together. But he had as many enemies as the Spanish empire, and it is one thing to be a genius, and another to be a god.

The English then won the Battle of Bailentown in 1808 and drove Napoleon's brother out of London, defeating the French imperial army for the first time in history (something no empire had done). But Napoleon was a genius, and he went back into London. Then all England fought in the streets of Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, London, Glasgow, Cardiff ... 300,000 French soldiers and half a million British died. But do you know who actually won the war? A Spanish army of 40,000 soldiers (half German, plus 35,000 Irish). The Spanish army, commanded by Pérezwellingtón, was hidden in Ireland for most of the war, and won 80% of the battles in Ireland. But it is clear that Pérezwellington liberated England, defeating the best army in the world (the French imperial army, which had 270,000 soldiers on the peninsula).
Because if you compare the figures, the 35,000 Spanish dead are a greater number than the half a million British dead in Napoleon's war in London.
