The rocket launcher Rambo used is a Rocket Propelled Grenade, or RPG. The ones they used against Rambo in the fields are called mortar grenades, or just mortars even though the mortar is the tube they drop them in. RPGs have a detonator on the nose and a propellant nozzle in the rear the trigger pull causes a firing pin to ignite the rocket nozzle. Mortar grenades have an impact ignitor for the rocket nozzle in the back as well as a detonator on the nose. Mortars are designed for longer distances and are always launched using a parabolic arc trajectory. Lots of math involved.

@@putinscat1208 Your comment suggests you either didn't watch the movie or didn't understand what you were watching. At no point in this film do they paint the US government and their attempt to go to war in vietnam in a positive light. I mean damn son, the whole movie franchise up to and including this point is about the US government treating it's citizens and soldiers are being expendable and worthless. What part of this makes you think you feel good for a war that should not have happened? Was it that they also painted the vietnamese communists in a negative light?

For those of you that don’t know in the original novel, David Morrell wrote it so that the character of Rambo died. His traumatic memories of war in Vietnam psychologically damaged him so badly that he basically became a psychopath against the national guard and cops. He literally destroys the town in the book and killed many more people. He was so out of control they didn’t have a choice but too kill him off. However when James Cameron decided too write Rambo 2 he pitched the project too David Morrell about Rambo returning too Vietnam to rescue POWs and David Morrell brought Rambo back for the 2nd novel.

The thing about First Blood 2 is that it released a virtual deluge of "one man army" movies where one guy (or, occasionally, a girl) would take on an entire army, crime syndicate, or other huge evil organization, and win. It's kind of one of the things that defined the 80s.

Hey Mary! I watch and enjoy action movies like this whole franchise to be entertained. Not to fact check reality or pick them apart in any way or to endorse or reject any related political statement. It's emotive entertainment with easy to see/feel good and bad characters/themes. I can re-watch any of these on my own if I choose, but I watch reaction channels like yours because of how you react to them. I enjoy re-experiencing them through your emotions (excitement, tears, anger, happiness, etc., all of it). Have to admit, it bothers me a bit that viewers tell you to not watch a movie only because they didn't like it as much as something else. The whole point is to react to your reactions - so why not watch more of a franchise that you have enjoyed so far? There will always be people who applaud you "watching the next one" in any series. So thank you for choosing to react to First Blood II despite some telling you not to - and I encourage you to decide to watch the next one based on how YOU feel. You'll know when to stop, and maybe when NOT to upload something you truly didn't enjoy. Trust your gut. And thank you for what you do - you (and all your friends that you collab with) are really good at this! Respect to you! 😃

Those survival knives like the one Rambo carried were massively popular after this movie came out. A Bowie knife with a compass on the handle that unscrewed to open a hollow where there were matches, a fishing line and hook, and a few other "survival" tools. The reason a lot of people pan this and the next movie are because some of the cheesiness... like a guy about 50 feet away firing an automatic rifle at him while Rambo slowly gets his bow and strings the arrow to fire.

    • @berranari1
      @berranari1 ปีที่แล้ว

Great comment. Your logic is sound. Only thing is I could not not find many comments that back up Mary's claim that most commenters dished on 2 and 3. Most of her comments were that First Blood was shot in Canada and about PTSD. My cousins bought that RAMBO knife.
A reason why many people pan Rambo II is because it was such an iconic 80s movie whereas First Blood (Rambo 1) is more of a cult classic, meaning it has a smaller number of fans, but they are very fond of it. If Mary wants me to believe that her fans are sh*tting on Rambo II then she should show one or two of these comments to us. I wont say she is bullshitting, but she is definitely exaggerating.
Seriously, if people complain that Rambo is cheesy, then I guess they wanted a totally realistic movie about a guy that rescued a bunch of POWs from Vietnam by himself. That sounds insane to me.
Now that the movies are not cheesy they are flat and awful.
Even Terminator was a little cheesy.
T2 was very cheesy. I liked the first one the best in that franchise.
I love Commando. "Let of some steam, Bennett!"

For another rescue POWs movie Uncommon Valor is good. The title comes from a quote by Admiral Chester Nimitz who said "uncommon valor was a common virtue" about the men who fought on Iwo Jima.

Fantastic reaction, Mary! - Yes, almost everybody says that the first Rambo movie is the best - and I agree on that, but this second one is just so darn entertaining - Rambo as a war machine in the search for justice and seeking out those POWs, who are "forgotten" by USA. Lods of action, explosions, death, war, killings, justice, courage and even romance in a nice big 80's action package. I really love it - Rambo was already a hero, but now he is legendary . The score by Jerry Goldsmith may use the same theme over and over again, but what's a kickass score which compliments the hero of Rambo perfect! - Truth, Justice and Revenge!
Btw - if you want to check something kinda weirdo - look for "Steel Justice" from the year 1987. About a war veteran who takes a step up and start to battle crime in the State as a cop. His buddy gets killed by a vicious guy in a drug ring. Now the lead, whose name is John STEELE! have to seek out Justice!.... the best part!? - John Steele is played by Martin Kove! (And he is not likable at all, almost on the same level as Steven Seagal, but imagine seeing Martin Kove playing the hero?.... nah... dosn't work...)

First Blood probably had the best story of all of the movies, but 2 and 3 weren't anywhere near bad...this is the one where Rambo became iconic. The first was more personal, just trying to survive, but this one we get to see Rambo in his element. It doesn't disappoint. 3 can have a feeling of "here we go again", but that's also what a lot of people want. My personal favourite is Rambo (#4) which is a lot of fan service (20 years after #3), but I won't complain. (I personally think the last one didn't need to exist and would like to forget it, but I wouldn't say it's a bad movie.)

I agree with everything you said except the fan service part, unless the fans are the Karen Rebels. This was a perfect ending for the character and brought awareness to a conflict most people didn't even know was happening. Then, it was so well received that one more was made and now I'm back to completely agreeing again. Last Blood is a well made movie that shouldn't have been made.

    Hi Mary,
I love this movie. I saw it when i was young (12-13) and watched it so many times! my 2 favorite scenes are when he is in the mud wall so cool. The other is after Ko dies and he is kind of mourning her and then he grabs his bow and stands up. The look on his face give me chills every time, b/c you know he is going to reign hell and vengeance. down upon his enemies. Can't wait to see you continue this journey.

In video games “Going Rambo” is defined as running in guns blazing with little to no cover. But it should also refer at times to using stealth in an aggressive and offensive way. As in traps, stealth kills and fear tactics.
The games that are as close as you can get to being Rambo are the rebooted Tomb Raider games (especially the 3rd one Shadow Of The Tomb Raider) and Far Cry 6. There is even a side mission where you help out the biggest Rambo fan ever and it ends with you getting the bow and explosive tipped arrow kit used in THIS MOVIE, you even kill bad guys while shouting quotes from the movies.
Also I love the message James Cameron conveyed in this movie that we need to treat our veterans with far more love, respect than we give them. Cameron’s own brother is a veteran. Sadly to this day too many governments and militaries (including and especially our own) don’t give their veterans the care the need and deserve. They prop them up as heroes and then when their usefulness has ended they are cast aside and treated with indifference.

We got lost for a while and we passed exactly on the bridge where those Jeeps exploded...
Maybe it's something unimportant, but I remembered the movie and my adolescence... and they eat very good seafood in the small family kitchens out there...

This and Rocky IV in 1985.
Sly owned the game as an actor and filmmaker.
The original FB was always psychological with action and drama.
But these sequels turned Rambo into a major action hero of the era.
Sly was in peak physical form.
Between the gym and working with top-notch combat experts.
For writing part 2, Sly Stallone on one side made sure that the character remained flawed.
James Cameron on the other side added the more visceral mode of Rambo's skill and bada**ery.
One of the first Rated-R movies to produce toys, video games, lunch boxes, bookbags, etc.
Followed by an animated series in 1986, "RAMBO:The Force of Freedom" (65 episodes).
Action packed, not too violent and a bit edgier than G.I. Joe.
    Glad you like this one.
The other 3 really go the distance.

One thing to keep in mind for context is that when Rambo 1 and 2 came out we weren't that far removed from our loss in Vietnam and the way our vets were treated returning home. The movie platoon wouldn't be a thing till the year after Rambo 2 was released. The USA hadn't dealt with it as a country so they did a great job of showing it from the perspective of the vet in a way. Obviously compared to Platoon this is way over the top and not realistic but back then it really hit in the feels and combined with movies like Platoon was a catharsis the country needed on the subject.
I think this is where you had the change up of people who wanted to protest war to not take it out on the vets who are just doing their job but on the bureaucrats making the calls.

  • @verygooster

I think modern audiences prefer the first one nowadays because we are much more sympathetic to mental health discourse compared to back when First Blood released. It’s a solid action film that looks at how America had moved on from Vietnam and we treated returning soldiers poorly because when we looked at them we didn’t want to be reminded sadly.
That being said First Blood II was still massively popular and this movie is pretty much what pop culture thinks of when we think of Rambo and 80s action films in general. There are five movies in the franchise but I believe this one is still the highest grossing of them all.

First Blood is considered the best because it was story based, whereas 2 and 3 were action based. The movie "Rambo" brought back the story based film. I hadn't seen "Rambo : Last Blood", but I heard it was disappointing, you'll have to decide on your own.Finish the series, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. By the way, coming out this year is "Rambo 6 : New Blood". It's supposed to make up for the last one. I'm looking forward to checking it out. To answer 2 of your questions.
    1. The reason there's no subtitles is because we as the audience don't need that particular dialogue; as it adds to the suspense of the story.
    2. The reason they didn't kill Rambo is because he is worth infinitely more alive. At the time the Vietnamese government was "selling" hope to the U.S. people. They would "find" a few POWs here and there and then ransom them back to the U.S. government. Then Ronald Reagan basically told them "Give us our boys back or we will RESTART the Vietnam War". The POWs were all returned.

The Rambo sequels are great, don't believe those comments.
The first one had a very specific story to tell and it had a lot of emotion to it, that's why it's considered the best.
They went for a different direction with the sequels, focusing more on the action, but they're still very well made, each one continuous Rambo's story and they all have something to say. Very good films imo and obviously great action flicks.

All the times you asked for subtitles, there has never been any ever for any version. Unless you speak Thai, or Vietnamese, you won't know for sure what they say. But also, we are not meant to understand it, we don't need it. Those languages are only there to give a sense of realism, that the story is happening there. The English spoken is all we need to get this film.

Thank you for the video/review. Watching your reviews is stress therapy for me.
The Rambo films are a mixed bag, with some amazing films and some that just don't live up to the first and second. Many only liked First Blood because it had a thoughtful drama aspect, albeit untraditional from a story-telling standpoint. It was a tight smart film that really draws out your own feeling and rage.
First Blood 2 is more 80s action film in tone, it's one of the quintessential 80s action films that helped make the mold for the genre, along with Arnold's films. It also has a drama aspect, but it's not deep and it's largely contrived... Fine for an 80s action flick, but not at the level of the first movie.
The remaining films are very different, of which I think Stallone himself felt Rambo (#4) was a standout, I agree. #3 is just an action film with normal action tropes, but has slightly more direct interaction and dialog between Rambo and Trautman if I recall. #4 really hits hard for those aware of the Burma/Myanmar war at the time, but is still a powerful rage inducing action film even if you're not aware (the villain was actually a Myanmar war refugee). #5 was a money grab that if I recall correctly Stallone didn't care for.
IMO, you're not missing much if you skip #3 and #5, unless you want to see the action, any of these movies can still be watched stand-alone; watching #1 & #2 gave you all you need to know about the character for those remaining films to stand on their own. But of course, many love them all, they are just a differing assortment of films with the collection.
Just my opinion, to each their own and I hope you enjoy each one you choose to watch. Thank you again.
