AK47, AKM, RPK, and AK74 Series Comparison (AK Series 1)

  • This is a general overview of the major Kalashnikov rifle variants to come out of Russia during the 20th Century. I am often asked what is the difference between the AK47 and AK74, or what a "Krink" is, or how the RPK differs from the standard AK. I hope this video helps a bit and serves as an introduction to the series. Later, we'll look at variants from other nations, but here its just those from Russia or nations such as Bulgaria that made exact copies.
    Featured rifles: Russian AK47 Type III, Russian Tula AKM, Polish Radom AKMS, Romanian Cugir RPK, Bulgarian Arsenal AK74, Bulgarian Arsenal AKS74, Bulgarian Arsenal AKS74U, Russian Izhmash AK74M, and Russian Molot RPK74M.

    The side folding buttstock was also handed out to platoon leaders, tankmen, or other vehicle based troops in the NVA (National Peoples Army of former eastern Germany). I know this from a former soldier who served in the NVA. They used the same barrel length of 415 millimeter but simply with a different buttstock as the normal infantry soldier would have had.

    On the RPK the reason that drum wouldn't fit and mags were tight was because the mag well was milled out to except hi cap mags after the assault weapons ban lifted and whoever milled it did not mill enough out. Atleast it wasn't milled out to big some of them were and were very loose.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      While i of course agree with your general idea, just a couple things.
      Obama didn't ban Russian AKs..hence why Molots are still coming in and available. He did prohibit American companies from doing business with a list of Russian companies either owned by or mostly controlled by the gov't....including Izhmash as part of the K.C. It was a sanction and not a true import ban. So hopefully yes someone like Trump will find it easier to overturn. Lets not forget though, this was all in response to Russia's actions with regards to Ukraine, which were in violation of current international law (not saying anything, just stating a legal fact).
      As to the ban on 7n6 ammo, sorry but Obama had nothing to do with that one. That was all I.O. Inc. there. The reason no one had ever tried importing an AK pistol in 5.45x39mm was because most companies knew if they did, that that would ultimately lead to the ban on 7n6 as it was considered armor piercing. It is ok to import AP ammo that can only be fired in a rifle, but not ok to import it if it can also be fired in a pistol.
      This is why companies like Arsenal and Century never did a 5.45mm pistol....well either I.O. didn't know this or just didn't care, as they asked permission to import a semi-auto pistol version of the Wz.89 Onyx from Radom, Poland. The ATF gave permission, but then that meant there was a pistol on the list that could fire 7n6 ammo. It took several years for the whole case to wind its way through the system, but the ultimate result was the ammo ban.
      The real kick in the nuts is that I.O. didn't even ever bring in the Onyx pistol. As they did with the Archer-01, they turned their back on the Polish imports and refocused on their USA made M247 series...lucky us....

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, I have a personal interest in seeing relations between the USA and Russia stabilize and improve. I do agree it would be nice if the USA stopped meddling so much, but its something we've been doing since WWII and is just kind of our thing. Lets not forget that Russia and China are often up to the exact same tricks too.
      I think it is more likely we'll see Izhmash guns again than it is Norinco. I am not sure American businesses are ready to have truely cheap Chinese guns hitting the market again. Politically, there really is no reason to lift that ban I'd think? And that's about all I have to say regarding politics. Its guns that i enjoy and find interesting hehe. Let the guys in D.C. do their thing.....and I hope they just let me do mine as I am a tax payer minding his own business hehe.

      +Ozark Bear Arms I agree with you. I have an interest with Russia becoming our friend, personally I view them more as a competitor than an enemy. Unlike china their our ideological opposites in my eyes. Anyway I'm seriously thinking about buying an AKS-74 after I can afford an AKM first. Seem like they'll be terrible fun.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the 5.45x39mm cartridge is a lot of fun, and quite accurate too.
      Right now the choice for an AKS74 is really clear....Arsenal SLR104FR. It comes with the modern black polymer furniture like the AK74M, but if a person wants to, swapping it out for the original AKS74 wood HG and metal stock is extremely easy.
      If you get to the point you want one, contact me and i'll hook you up with it and give a youtube subscriber discount too, cheers.

    As I watched your video, I pulled out each of my AK's (all in 7.62X39), and compared notes. Due to laws and rules governing their importation and assembly, any AK variant today is a mixed bag of import and U.S parts. Your collection is a good reference work, as most examples are very close to the original source.
    Your vids are always quality, Misha, and are much appreciated. I'm always amazed at your ability to roll out technical data, with no lagging around. One production quality note - when using that room, if you could shut down the air conditioner, or whatever is making that background noise, it would help. Your camera and lighting are great, though. With TH-cam videos, there are a lot of variables in quality and content, but yours hold to a very high standard. Please keep it up.
    Yrs, Chris F.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, thank you for everything. Yes, I've tried to get my rifles as close to original as is possible under the law. It is actually quite fun to hunt some of the parts down and fit them on.
      As to data, well I've always had to have a decent memory since it isn't like I could refer to paper notes when i needed something throughout my schooling and adult life. Plus, I've spent nearly 20 years messing around with AKs. Eventually it just gets ingrained i think hehe.
      I know what you mean about the noise. In person it isn't loud but on the camera...but it is the fridge, so hard to turn off for the videos.

    I passed up a VEPR 1V a few years back for a very attractive price and I've been kicking myself over it ever since because they've exploded in price. For as much as they currently go for I'd rather just build a proper RPK74 in 5.45 rather than settling for 5.56, but still I really wish I would have picked it up when I had the chance.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish i could tell you its fine and that the VEPR 1V isn't anything special. But that would be lieing and i rather try and avoid doing that hehe.
      Its a Russian RPK74M. When it came out I had a Bulgie RPK74 in 5.45x39mm built by Vector. I sold it to get the VEPR 1V. Not 5.45x39mm sadly but is literally my only complaint. When i got mine, they were $999.95 retail. The Vector ended up going for $1,500 on Gunbroker, so it was a win/win.
      One thing though, i 100% agree. At current prices I don't think I'd settle for a .223 RPK either. For that kind of money it would have to be all the way correct. If you ever run across one of Vector's RPKs, I can highly recommend it. Good build quality and the parts they used were in excellent condition. Even came with the hard to find RPK74 sling. I wish you good luck. A small caliber RPK is a blast to shoot too.

    As a longtime AK enthusiast,I very much enjoy your videos. Also very much envious of your collection! Quick question,the Type 3 at the beginning seems to have a contemporary sling on it. Now I know in today's world,AK's from the 50's to present day are still in use,hidden from the PTB,and equipped with whatever is available. But do you think that AK's in a private (legal) collection should have the correct accessory for the time? Like mags,slings,bayonets,etc.? I'm trying to put together an AK collection,and am going crazy (and broke) fitting each one with the right parts.

      Sure I do, i try a good bit to match things up at least reasonably well. But what type of sling were you thinking of for that rifle? Russia used the clip type sling from the SKS onward. Poland did use a different style of sling in the beginning. It had a leather tab in the front rather than clip (in fact there were 2 or 3 versions). There was also the RPD sling which was different.

      Part 2, which features some of the foreign variants has been recorded and will be posted soon.
      But, the best and closest to the original AKS74U Krink on the market is hands down the Arsenal SLR104UR.
      None of the pistols are true Krinks. The M92PV is a great gun but quite different in the details. The Draco is not even close hehe.
      So yeah, catch Part 2 and maybe it can help some more, cheers.

    This was a great video, thanks for posting. Can you let me know what a PLO parts kit is? Also it looks like the finish on the first type 3 bolt carrier that you showed is painted black and not polished?

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      PLO stands for Palestine Liberation Organization, and in this case refers to parts kits that were brought in back around 2000.
      Several AKs were given to the PLO by Russia, and later captured by Israel.
      Then Israel sold them to the USA where they were cut up into kits and sold on the commercial market.
      Some were beat to hell, while others were in very nice shape. Most like my milled AK47 were mis-matched, but a few were matching like my AKM here.

    Part 2 is uploading tonight and will be available tomorrow. Sorry it took a bit of time, but it ended up being over 1.5 hours total.
    Nations featured are: Poland, Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia, China, East Germany, Bulgaria, and Finland. Of course we couldn't have every single variant ever made, but we tried to give a decent cross section at least. So please check it out when you have some time to kill. Thank you all so much for supporting the channel.

      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I like it for sure. It was in its own little video several months back too.
      I got it "relatively" cheap...many hardcore collectors passed it by because it isn't all matching (but is Russian). I didn't care....to me a parts kit gun really can never be truely 100% matching anyway. It feels very well done and shoots great. Besides if a matching kit gun ever comes my way for money I can afford, I can always sell this one. Until then though, it fills the early Russian AK spot in my collection very well.
      Thanks much for watching, and we'll try and get part 2 up ASAP. Sorry it was a little delayed; a couple personal events got in the way.

    i have of recent come to really appreciate the 5.45 rnd so my new unicorn has become the RPK74 actually seen a kit being sold that i just missed. wondering if you may have knowledge of where one may find one. outside of luck thank you sir great information on this subject

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you much for watching, and I agree with you. I've been a fan of 5.45x39 since around 2000, even got my father (a diehard Colt & .223 fan) really liking it too. RPK74s are tough to find. No one ever imported one, with the closest being the VEPR FM-74-11 (or 21). Kits used to be out tehre but not many came, worst though NOdak stopped making the receiver years ago. But I do have 1 suggestion. Vector Arms sold commercially an RPK74 build for a couple years back around 2006-2008. You might keep on the lookout for one of those. They are high quality and had original barrels. They were built from kits marked Bulgaria but in reality were scrubbed Molot Russian.

    Hey misha, Kinda funny but we both have Izhmash 1971 dated "PLO" Ak's. Mine being a AKMS while yours is AKM. Pretty neat, Also I found my receipts from my Vepr 12 folder I purchased from you a few years ago lol. Hope all is well, thanks for the content.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, i got some of the first VEPR 1Vs in the country. I had been on a wait list for awhile and then they came in from I.O. On their site at the time they had the barrel at 16" and the stock as fixed. I called them and told them the barrel was 23" and the stock a spot welded folder; telling them these were good things and people would pay more...but I.O. never cared and never changed their website description.
      I tried getting as many to buy the 1V as possible, but since I.O. didn't really market it, it never gained much traction. Plus a lot of people kept waiting for an X39 version to come out even though Molot was saying they had no plans to do one.
      Today, it is one of my favorite AKs...even if it is in kind of a strange caliber hehe.

    • @darrynbrown9211
      @darrynbrown9211 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well thankfully we were smart and bought them when they were available along with the Beryls.
      Because those two products in particular the 1V have sky rocketed in value.
      I bought alot of the 45 round Molot magazines as well when they were at 70 dollars. So in Hindsight was on my side that year.

    • @ozarkbeararms8840
      @ozarkbeararms8840 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, you heard very little about those 45 rd Molot .223 mags either. Strange too since before that batch was imported, that was a rare mag in the US and would bring $200+ on Gunbroker.
      I look at imports like this, you can always sell one later if you decide you just don't like it. Often though, the really neat ones are of the market fast, so if you have interest it is best to snap it up.
      With the first batch of VEPR 1Vs, I decided not to get one myself. Then i thought about it and the price dropped some so with the second I kept one back figuring betting on any kind of Russian AK was close to a sure thing.
      Regarding the Archer, man don't get me started hehe.
