Honda EU2000i - Running out of Gas in Carburator Modification without installing petcock valve

  • How I modified my Honda EU2000i to allow engine to run out of gas without killing it using stock kill system without installing a separate petcock valve like others have done. Actually, it is just as easy to drain the carburetor instead of doing any of these mods and removes all gasoline where running out of gas keeps a very small amount in carburetor after running out of gas.

    Hi Dale: Just an FYI..... I just watched your video, and felt like I had to comment. Yes, disconnecting the wire that shuts off the engine will allow you to run the engine until the fuel in the line runs out, but it also creates a problem with the fuel pump. This generator uses a diaphragm fuel pump that requires it to stay immersed in fuel, otherwise it will dry out and crack, causing it to fail prematurely. By disconnecting the wire, it runs the fuel pump dry. This is the reason a pet cock fix is preferred, as it keeps the fuel pump wet.

      Does the new EU2200 have the same fuel pump? The new ones have a shut off valve on them so the engine does not die so you can run them out of gas. Is the fuel pump before the shutoff? I don't recall seeing anything in the manual saying not to drain the system totally.

      What do you mean by petcock fix? Not clear.

    I had no idea it was a fuel valve too, I thought it was just a kill switch. Another great generator video thanks

    Dale, I have two EU2000i Hondas, one is the Companion and the other is just the regular one. Does the non-Companion have that same fuel valve behind the big rotary switch?

    Folks to be honest, this method works great, but just a simple twist on the screw under the carburetor is simple and drains out all fuel from carburetor with no modification needed. At home, this is what I do. If on a road trip, I do let engine run out of fuel typically but draining gets that last few drops out that doesn’t come out b6 running out of fuel. Your choice.

    • @DaleStagg
      @DaleStagg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, but this is just an alternative to those not wanting to do the screw.

    Is true.....I work on these everyday....I run them out of fuel every time. But good luck with your unit.

    you should have put a waterproof switch and not just a regular switch. While camping during the night water dew will form or slight rain, cause the switch to get wet, and water will enter the engine compartment area. then later the switch will malfunction.

      Nice idea! Have had no issues so far, but you are correct.

  • @jackdfowler
    @jackdfowler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well, actually if you turn it to just before the off position, it will let you run it out of fuel, and once it stops, then turn it all the way to off. You didn't need to add the switch at all.

    • @dannyboy9254
      @dannyboy9254 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not true.

    • @jackdfowler
      @jackdfowler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is true, matter of fact there is a video on you tube that shows this.....from like a few years back.....and I do this on every unit that has this type or round turn switch. If the switch is set up with the choke at the opposite end of the off switch and run in the middle.....works every time. Not if choke in the middle, and run at the end. It will not work.

    • @jackdfowler
      @jackdfowler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also if the choke is in a different location this will work too, like on the Honda 2000. Leave the choke open to run, then turn the switch to just before the off position....let it run out of fuel., Then tun all the way to off. Simple.

    Just try to cut the engine switch just a 1/4 turn to the right..you will kill the gas flow..!

  • @tonys602
    @tonys602 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For some reason People keep trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. There is a knob on top of the gas cap that shuts off the fuel to the carb allowing you to run the carb dry. No mods needed.

    • @jackdfowler
      @jackdfowler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tony S this is true about the gas cap.... however it doesn't allow the unit to run out of fuel....this only turn off the vent, which basically vacuum locks the fuel in the tank not to vent., But the fuel will still be in the carb. So this isn't a solution, but if you forget to open the vent on the top, it will be difficult to start too.

    • @DaleStagg
      @DaleStagg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As stated, turning the gas cap valve stops the vent of gasoline starving the system of fuel, but not sure it will deplete the gas in carburetor or not.

    • @arriagada1957
      @arriagada1957 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it will runs out of vent air..! But for storage is better to let the fuel out of the system..if is for long time take the fuel out of the tank..!

  • @herbbates4713
    @herbbates4713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don't people just put a petcock on the fuel bowl drain and then shut it down with the switch/fuel shut off and then drain the fuel from the bowl, that keeps the pump wet and carb dry

  • @RockofAgesTheBand
    @RockofAgesTheBand 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    this looks like a ton more work than installing a fuel cutoff switch.

    Draining looks better. It will remove more fuel. Huge discovery that the electric switch is also a fuel shut off switch. You talk too much. This should have been a three minute video instead of 8.

    • @DaleStagg
      @DaleStagg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Draining is actually the best and after time goes on, I do drain for storage but just run out of gas for short storage times. Sorry I talked to much. I try to explain everything in detail but not always needed.

  • @gizzyguzzi
    @gizzyguzzi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not do this? Because if you want to shut off the gennie it empties the fuel lines every time. Takes about 20 pulls to start it again. So you have to choke it and plug the muffler to kill it. Kinda dumb. So like you found, disconnecting the kill switch is not the solution. I'm gonna install a fuel shutoff instead. I don't want to screw up the wires with those tap a line things, they are bad news.
