  • Now that we have been RV Living Full Time for 6 months, we have found what products we truly need. One of them is a generator- whether you have solar or not.
We purchased our Honda EU2000i generator 16 years ago as Hurricane Charley was approaching our home in Central Florida. It kept us powered up for a week while our power was out. Since then it has gotten us through many extended power outages because of hurricanes. When we bought our First travel trailer in 2011, our honda generator was the perfect companion for our RV so we could dry camp.
In this video we will share our 16 year experience with this generator and its successor the EU2200i generator. We will cover these topics Important specifications, Maintenance, Storage, Connecting to an RV, extension cords, fuel cans, using it with a solar setup, and our overall 16 year impression.
We will also go over the baby brother to the EU2000/EU2200, the EU1000i generator and how that may be an excellent option.
If you are looking for portable generator, the Honda line of generators cant be beat, but they are not the cheapest generator on the market, you get what you pay for.

@@DownsizingMakesCents I have one generator over 25 years old and still going a Coleman 1850 watt non inverter generator it's truly indulestructable. I've overloaded it pushing it to run everything even rattling the valves being overloaded over the years running it past the governor for more power in a pinch overspeeding it and still not dying. it has blown a resettable breaker over the years but that's it. Just flipped the breaker back on that's it. It has the bulletproof Briggs engine on it. I also have a new 2200 watt Honda on propane, Natural Gas and gasoline. The hutch mountain kit is truly the nicest fuel conversion kit I have installed. I've only used propane on the Honda. I had a cheap Chinese 80cc inverter generator and I burned it up.from overloading it the motor would still run but the overload light just kept coming on and wouldn't make any power. Have you ran your Honda that hard over the years? The reason I ask I'm a little cautious to use another inverter generator of any type after burning one up. The inverter board died in it.so if you see the overload light keep coming on or shutting the electrical power off you better reduce the power or not try to run it overloaded. even honda-tech out of Georgia said this but I wanted to see from someone that owned a Honda a long time and maybe ran a generator as hard as I have. thanks.

I don't have one yet, but I didn't even consider using one without chaining it. Even if attended, it is good to secure it in case people leave for a moment. Note that the chains from hardware stores are inadequate for security.

I just ran my Honda EU1000I paralleled to my EU2000I generator as a test using a Harbor Freight parallel kit. Starting the EU1000I first, then the EU2000I, I was able to attain 21 amps @117 volts. I measured this with separate voltage and current meters, both true rms.

Great video from 3 yrs ago, Thank you. I bought my EU2000i a few months before Hurricane Charley, we lived in Punta Gorda (ground zero for Charley) It has performed flawlessly ever since 2004. I usually get 9 hours run time to a tank of fuel. Had it running for 15 days straight until the power was restored to this area. In 2022 purchased a EU2200i as a back-up after Hurricane IAN clobbered us once again, this time living in Port Charlotte. I use the EU2000i weekly to do the yard trimming, have a little trailer I tow behind the lawn tractor to carry the generator and various yard tools It's been a life saver..

I bought one of these at least 12-15 years ago. Was trying to use it with my pickup camper to run the AC primarily. It would not start theAC so I bought a second one and connected them with the factory kit. That worked great. I see they offer a soft staraccessoriy for the AC now but it would not work back then. Both still work perfect but I don't use them often anymore as my last couple of RV's have on board units.

I can see that problem. We have the Microair soft system for our bedroom AC and it’s helped so much.

Two refrigerators all fans and lights plus TV and coffee maker. I was able to talk my wife into one more so we can parallel them and have one small window ac next summer. I use marine stabil and no problems. I learned about these gems working on the railroad. 2 2200i's run my whole house like nothing happened minus the huge central air ac.

When we bought our first TT we too bought the Honda EU2000i. That was in 2002, we saw it at the big RV show on Pomona, Ca. We just knew we had to have it and paid about $900 for it if I remember. Just last year we traded it in for a 3000w and received roughly $800 toward the trade. That generator was 17 years old. That tells you what the expected life span is and we hope our 3000w will give us that many years as well.

My buddy is very good with small engines and had it all taken apart to dry and 2 days later while still on the island she fired right back up, the charger did not fare as well, I told the story to the Milwaukee rep at a demo day and she handed me a brand new charger from her truck, it's stuff like this that make me loyal to certain brands.

@@DownsizingMakesCentsYou can use both truck diesel (white) or Farm diesel (Red) I have used many different Gen Sets over the years and my Kipor is just unbeatable. It is 79dbs at one meter distance. I am in England and the plug sockets and systems are different over here from the USA. Over here we have as standard the grid supply at 240vac and also 3phase at 440vac can be availble but only upon request to the local net work supplier and you have to pay to get it laid in. We as mains supply do not get 120vac but have to use mobile yellow site transformers, 240vac in and 120vac out to use in safety notified places such as building sites and general construction. Hope this helps....

We old people have wisdom to share 😉
Larry was going to do a follow up video because we bought a 2200. Unfortunately, he recently had a health crisis so we are way behind on our videos.
Hopefully he will be up to it soon 🤗

Hi i am graham tarling, I live in ruislip, west London uk. Your video was very very good and informative, and you asked for comments etc, well you may be interested in my short story.
I bought a 2nd hand eu10i honda way back in the end of july 2015. purpose was to run speakers outside for Zumba classes where no power available. I serviced it when i got it, changed oil for honda sae 10 30 marine oil, did the air filter and spark plug, all of which were in good condition any way.
Sadly i only used it twice in august 2015, put it away without draining fuel or anything, and it has been in my stairwell of my flat totally untouched until 7th july 2021, thats six years without touching it.
So I thought just get rid of it because i clearly thought it was scrap. But I decided to try and get it going so perhaps i could use it to power my electric hedge cutter, blower, shredder etc etc.
Well, all the fuel had gone, so filled up with petrol with fuel stabi and carb cleaner, would not start. So undid fuel drain on bottom of carb, let fuel run through, then tried again to start it. IT started 2nd pull, run ok on non eco mode but hunted badly on eco. SO put some more 10ml carb cleaner in fuel tank and ran it for 1 hour, it ran perfectly, sweet as a nut. So changed the oil, it was already very clean, checked air filter, decided to change it anyway, checked plug , fine. Used it yesterday 17 July 2021 for about an hour on eco mode to power my 500w hedgecutter, ran really well, could not hear it above the hedgecutter noise in eco mode. Fitted custom magnetic oil dipstick and , and used custom oil drain plug to drain the oil, just ordered cover for it and plan on using it on a very regular basis, instead on my petrol hedgecutter etc etc.
Hope this is of interest to you all,
    Kind Regards Graham Tarling
