    This was a good reminder - the boxing game has so many faces. And, like any fighting sport it's hard to remember the greats especially after losses. But a good jog down memory lane that Manny Pacquiao was "THAT DUDE!" for a long time.

      @@NoProtocol Also, fun fact: something to look into if interested. Is Manny fought in a Southpaw stance. But he's a right-hander. This is likely due to the influence of Filipino martial arts (interchangeably called Kali or Arnis or Eskrima/Escrima). Those martial arts emphasize the lead hand being the most dominant since the weapon would be closer to the opponent. Probably helping throw his opponents off because his jab is going to come quicker off his naturally dominant side. Filipino martial arts also influenced Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do philosophy and fighting (largely) as a Southpaw as well. Nerded out a bit on some fighting/martial arts minutia but you can appreciate the subtilties, "the more you know."

He was awesome to watch and a complete puzzle for opponents, 'the untouchable' was almost impossible to tag cleanly. I'm an 84-yearold New Yorker who has been living in The Philippines for the past 13 years. I've been a boxing fan most of my life. This is not meant to take anything away from Manny Pacquiao because I think he's one of the all-time greats, but this weight class division stuff is ridiculous. When I started following boxing in the 1950's, there were 8 divisions. Now there are 17. Every few pounds is a new weight class. There's another idiotic statistic that's always been around; reach. For some crazy reason, reach in boxing is measured from fingertip to fingertip with outstretched arms instead of from one shoulder to that arm's tip. It never seems to bother anyone that a fighter's reach can be listed as 74 inches. Wow. That's some arm. It is a completely meaningless measurement that has nothing to do with how a punch can be delivered. While I'm talking about meaningless stats, why in God's name are movie box office stats based on gross money taken in instead of the number of tickets sold. They are comparing movies made in 1939, when tickets probably were a dollar or two with movies showing today at $20 or so. Again, nonsensical. Okay, I'm finished with my rant. As always, love ya.

    • @NoProtocol
      @NoProtocol  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t know you lived in Philippines! Further reason to watch that Geography Now video. That’s actually a good point about box office stats, i had no idea they were calculated that way. Seems like a flawed system

    • @hughtube5154
      @hughtube5154 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Worse than the number of weight classes is the number of belts, each one issued by a different organization, with different contenders rated. Makes it easier to become a world champion because the best don't have to get in line and fight each other they can pick their lane. Too many promoters and networks who refuse to share an event, meaning the best don't fight the best, and the judging and drug testing is suspect.
      On the reach thing, I wonder if they judge arm span to see if it's possible anyone can wrap their arms around Butterbean? Or gain crazy leverage off a bolo punch?

    • @EdMac40
      @EdMac40 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think you'd enjoy watching and learning about Jason "White Chocolate" Williams, one of the flashiest and most entertaining basketball players in history. He apparently used to practice his ball-handling skills by wearing oversized oven mitts and attaching ankle weights to his wrists, and many even say he could control how the ball landed in your hands so that you wouldn't have to readjust the seams before taking the shot. Watching his best passes is probably a great start, but he could also score in spectacular fashion himself.

    Depends what you want from boxing. Manny Pacquiao was the perfect blend of speed, aggression, and combination punching. Joe Calzaghe would be another like Manny, though without the knockout power after he broke his hands. Gatti vs Ward, Barrera vs Morales, Ali vs Frazier are legendary bloodbaths of fights. If you appreciate skills and technical excellence, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Vasyl Lomachenko, Oleksander Usyk, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Pernell Whittaker are all phenoms. For crazy knockouts, Mike Tyson, Julian Jackson, Thomas Hearns, Deontay Wilder, Naoya Inoue.

    For the Margarito fight, there was some real bad trash talk before that fight. Margarito and his trainer mocked Freddie Roach, Pacquiaos trainer, for having Parkinsons disease. They imitated Freddie's tremors and slurred speech and laughed at Freddie. They did this shit in camera.
    HBO showed this video to Pacquiao and Roach to get their reaction. Pacquiao said ,quietly, " It's ok coach, i take care of it".
    And then Pacquiao beat the hell out of Margarito.
    Margarito was caught using loaded gloves against Shane Mosley a couple years before this, too. Margarito is a real scumbag. Watching Manny give him that beating was extremely satisfying.

    Manny Pacquiao must've been so good or so cool that Norm Macdonald actually bet $25k on him against "Sugar" Shane Mosley to win just $3k... Although Norm admitted to be a bit worried that the other guy's first name is "Sugar".
