People say Tyson was a beast and that he won with his power but if you look carefully he's giving a masterclass in peek-a-boo style. He's very, very skilled, not just very powerful.

Yup! The peek-a-boo and his gazelle punch were a deadly combination. Also his conditioning, especially his muscle mass; he was short in comparison to most heavyweights, but that weight on him was nearly all muscle, ready to power through most guards.

Tyson was 5'-11" and weighed between 215-220 lbs in his prime. Which was a bit lighter than most guys he faced who averaged 230.
His prime was 1985-1995. He was World Champion from 1986-1990. He was also the youngest Heavyweight champion Ever at 19 years old.
The named "Sugar" is after Sugar Ray Robinson who's considered by most as the greatest pound for pound Boxer of all time. Its because his boxing was So sweet to watch.

The greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, and youngest champ ever at just 20. Perfect and totally unique technique, fast, aggressive. No one like him to this day. To be 220 lbs of muscle at 5'10 in itself is a feat, and dominating heavyweights who were 6'4 to 6'6, insane. Not to mention his endurance, he went ALL out and didn't slow down, having the same intensity from round 1 into round 10.
I highly encourage you to react to a video on the history of Mike, or a video on Mike when he was a teen in the amateurs working his way up. His life was like a movie. Brutal childhood on the streets, adopted by his boxing coach, and went on to become undefeated undisputed heavyweight champ of the world at just 20. The videos of him training back in the 80s, phenomenal stuff.

Of course he was not the best heavyweight of all time. That's stupid. His peak was very short and in that peak he fought no one in the excellent category never mind a great one. Holmes was obviously finished. In this peak he was a serious match for anyone - very fast, hard to hit, power from every angle, every shot thrown aimed at taking your head off, very sharp and accurate and the best short puncher in history. But he also had very serious disadvantages with this short arms.

    • @prefix253
      @prefix253 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@@Carl-nj1op My perspective is that the best version of Mike beats the best version of any other heavyweight we've seen. Furthermore, being able to kick so much ass at such a high intensity against heavyweights who were almost always taller and larger than him (since he was just 5'10) puts him in the GOAT position imo. And his "disadvantage with short arms" was actually a massive factor in his advantage (as to why he hit so hard and was so devastating on the inside). Short arms are only a problem if you can't close the distance. Prime Mike Tyson closed the distance with varying ease against the best of his time. Say what you want about his competition, but Spinx, Ribalta, and Tony Tucker were all undefeated until they met Mike, with Spinx being an absolutely amazing fighter to anyone who knows more than Tyson highlight footage. And Razor Ruddock was an absolute beast, a clear challenge to Mike (which he overcame twice). I think that prime Mike would beat any of the other past legends.

II grew up in the 80s. Iron Mike was a phenom onto himself.
He is 5'10" built like a brick shed you might say. Speed and power.
A saying he used everybody has a plan....until they get hit.
The man was known for his 1st KOs. Jokes about how you settle yourself into your seat to enjoy the fight as the bell rings to start the fight. Then Tyson launches his attack and the bell rings to end the fight. That was common. Also peole complaining about what they paid on Pay Per View to see the match, only to see it end in 30 seconds.
Now if you have an interest in MMA (mixed martial arts, you might enjoy the legendady Bas Ruten a dutch fighter and The King of Pancreas. A bit of grappling and kickboxing that made for very exciting matches. Especially his famed liver punch. No one takes 3 and continues standing. Some opponents were rushed to the hospital because of liver damage. That would be on your right hand side below your rib cage.
Make no mistake these fights have life long consequences. Do not EVER try this whomever reads this without training on how to protect yourself.

Tyson was scary because not only did he have one of the most devastating punches in boxing history, regarding power, he was also accurate as you can see in the video, when he threw his punches, he made damn sure they landed and hurt. You add the speed & defense, he was so good at his peak. His behavior outside the ring ended his reign as champ, if he kept that in check, he'd be up there as the GOAT

One of the most impressive combos that Tyson loved to do was to come in with a hard shot to the side of the body near the kidneys, which activates a reflex where the opponent has to drop their guard (I know this bc I’ve been hit there during sparring many times) and then he would get a clean head shot before they could bring their guard back up. It was lightning fast and devastating. There is an excellent example of it at 3:45 in this video.

For 8 year run, Mike Tyson was the best. No one wanted to fight him. Leon Spinks was the Champion and cried because he was too scared to enter the ring. He walked slow into the ring and Mike Tyson knocked him out. Mike gave power on every punch. He had triuble with skilled tall fighters like Lenox Lewis and he never fought Big Daddy Riddick Bowe, who was amazing as well. Tyson also was 0-2 against Evander Hollifield

Love to have grown up w Tyson. The anticipation for his fights was palpable. He always fought taller men with long reaches and it did not matter. It wasn't until years later on rewatch that I appreciated his quick elusiveness and his devastating body work combo'd w upper. Always thought, w his shorter stature, that he was punching w the entire world supporting him whereas the taller men were fighting down or crouching. Prime Iron Mike was glorious in the ring... just a predatory big cat ready to pounce.

Tyson was a short 5ft-11 and weighed between 215 and 219. Near the bottom of the heavyweight division but he was so compact and powerful with great hand speed. He became heavyweight champion in 1986 at 20 yrs old. The youngest heavyweight champ ever I think.

I still remember the night when I decided to stay home instead of watching his fight vs buster Douglas at a friends house. Back then we thought nobody could ever possibly beat him. My friend called and said he lost and I didn’t believe it. This was back before internet for mass media and I watched the tv constantly to see if it was true. My parents came home from a night out and I told him I heard Tyson lost and they laughed as if it wasn’t possible. I probably waited a few hours longer before I found out it was true.

In his prime, Tyson was unstoppable. So much so that near the later 80s, he barely trained and would still win. It finally caught up to him against Buster Douglas after his break up with Robyn Givens. If he had Cus Dmato throughout his career he would have never lost.

The craziest thing to me is how hard you would get hit if you had the audacity to take a tyson “KO punch” and not go down. You obviously are just trying to keep it together, so you’re distracted and your defense reflexes in a state of shock. Meanwhile, Tyson thought he won. Because, as far as he was concerned, he had executed his physical gameplan and you should be done. In team sports, less physically brutal sports, this often leads results in a momentum swing. When the leader(s) fires what they thought was a winning move, only to realize their resilient opponent is just as determined as ever.
In a Tyson fight, Mike took that shit personally. He felt like he gave you a chance to go down like you should and ensure your own safety. And then you went and tried to keep fighting. Open season.
His finishing ability was fucking “awesome” in the truest sense of the word.

Peek-a-boo style is fundamentally great against taller opponents since what you want is to get inside and hit them with quick, hard punches and retract back to the body. Tyson was a master, that head movement and footwork was brilliant

"The opponent has a wild reach advantage" - that was the crazy thing about Mike - they all did! As a heavyweight fighter being only 5'10", he was shorter than everyone he fought. But his ability to slip punches and come in with either of his two devastating punches (left hook or right uppercut) was unmatched. He was/is a different animal for sure!

Mike was a tiny heavyweight, but when you look at his physiology and musculature, his muscles and tendons are connected so much further away from the joints in his arms than most people that it makes for some incredible leverage and power on his punches that most average people could never get no matter how strong they get. Mix that with all of his ballet and mental training and it's just an insane combination.
He's an older man now but even his newest training videos show you that he is a uniquely scary and dangerous example of human.

Tyson was and is the only Heavyweight Pro who made hard combos to perfection, all others made two or three moves thanholding or, like Klitschkos, lay on the smaller opponent. These Tyson bamm-bamm-bamm-bamm hook body, body, uppercut, head, head, uppercut is on of a kind.
For all Ali and Foreman fans: Old Boxing was slow, less punches, and after round 8 it was hugging, waiting, walking...bear hug fight. Bec the Steam was over, too much bodyweight and fat, less condition. Huge guys but no perfection and overall training.
