- This monsoon season the Thailand Motorbike tour almost didn't start! This was definitely an unlucky, but exciting, start on my rainy season Thailand motorbike tour. I had a variety of delays and setbacks before this 5 week tour even began. Join me as this motorcycle tour will take me up to Chiang Rai, the Golden Triangle, and then we will explore the western parts of the Isaan province. Doin this trip during monsoon season presents its own set of challenges. I am excited to take you guys along on this trip. In this episode I travel over 800 km from Bangkok to Chiang Rai on my Honda ADV160 motorbike. Let's ride, visit differet night markets, eat street food and try to stay dry during this rainy season motorbike tour. This is definitely my most challenging motorbike trip yet, here in the country of Thailand. Join me for some wet adventures!

The night market was great. The bike is pretty filthy. It’s got almost 10,000 km on it, and it’s not quite a year old. Hoping to get it washed tomorrow.

Believe me when I say. I feel your pain with riding in the rain. Quality gear makes all the difference. Finding out your quality gear has sprung a leak makes a difference too. 😏
I often ride during rainy days, which we have a lot of here in Washington. After trying the Pinlock for the first time last season. What a game changer. Definitely improves a soggy ride.

Yeah, this is my first helmet with pinlock, and I’m glad I put it on before I left. It’s definitely helping, although my glasses are still steaming up a little bit. Here is waterproof, the failure point was me not putting it on soon enough. Lol. Here when it rains it’s still warm. Glad you enjoyed this one Frank.

We love that night market but the one in this video looked a lot calmer and laid back.
I am not visiting Chiang Mai on this trip. I stopped there on my Mai Hong Son tour. Honestly, I didn’t care for that city at all. Just felt like a smaller version of Bangkok, but with a larger condensation of tourists

@@LifewithSerg You're right! I think back about 4 years ago and sometimes it seems like yesterday, so like you said, it will be sooner than I think. I must follow a few dozen channels of expats living in Thailand (as well as Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines as well), and I gather as much useful information as I can, so if and when the time comes I'll be prepared as much as I can, at least from a remote perspective. I try to get to Thailand about once a year and have friends scattered around the country, so that helps. I do enjoy your channel very much and I do appreciate the laid back, "local" perspective that you bring to your channel. I've given up on watching the million or so other videos from first time, and shall we say, slightly younger travellers, where everything is "insane", "crazy" and click-baity. Keep up the good work!

Ha ha. The weather is so pretty gable here. I had to put on and takeoff my rain gear four times today.
Chaing Rai is so nice and the hotels you stayed at really good deals they looked great. I love those markets so much to see and bargains to be had. The roads in the countryside can be dangerous. Safe travels Serg

This is what I really want to feel, freedom, no worry about my work. Stay where I want to be, planing day by day.

There is lots of touristy stuff there, and lots of tourists walking around. But overall, it was a pretty chill area.

Whenever I go to a place and they have live artists that are not playing copyrighted music, I tried to use it. I think it gives a very authentic feel. I hope you enjoy the market.

I use to ride Chiang Mai to Kanchanaburi, also to Surin. I would take about 3 trips a year during dry season. Great fun I did avoid wet season
Some days I’ve had nothing but sunshine, and some days it’s been raining.
@@LifewithSerg Thats a pain caught in a rain storm on a trip to issaan in June one year, Talk about getting wet. It has been raining every day here in Chiang Mai for the last 2 weeks. Be safe on the road.And enjoy

Clockwise, when at a festival in Nakhon Sawon a number of years ago, it didnt take long before the crowd walked in an orderly fashion in a clockwise direction, no one there giving direction, the locals just did it, the west could learn much from Thailand.
Yeah, I thought it was actually pretty cool that everyone just did that. Didn’t take me long to realize that I was trying to swim upstream. Lol.

Yeah, that night market was awesome. I’ve realized that I will not be able to cover all of Isaan on this trip. I think Khon Kahn will be as far as I get into Isaan.

but what a great bike you dont need a massive bike for thailand , but these adv are great all rounder with plenty of room for storage

Yeah, these bikes are great. I’ve got almost 10,000 km on mine and I’ve only owned it for about 10 months. However, I think I’m ready for something a little bit bigger for some of these longer trips.

Question regarding those grilled skewers of pork and beef.
Pork is your basic common domesticated pig worldwide, but “beef” at a street market stand in Thailand is likely carabeef aka domesticated water buffalo.
While carabeef is much leaner than US or Aussie beef it is also healthier for you than our exported beef. It is a common sight at street food markets and from what I have learned is rather inexpensive there.
I can just imagine what a water buffalo full rib roast would taste like all carved up into tomahawk/cowboy/boneless rib eyes and cooked sous vide and reverse seared.
In the US and Canada there are a few herds of water buffalos but the meat is outrageously expensive.
Yeah, you’re probably right, I doubt it’s any kind of Australian beef or anything like that. Still quite tasty.

We love staying at Hi Chiang Rai every rime we're in town. There's a great Korean restaurant just 100m up the road in bar street. We enjoy your videos but have gotta ask why you ride so far each day and don't stop at the little towns on the way to your big destinations? We drive about 15,000km each year that we're in Thailand for 5 months and always enjoy the small towns much better than the tourist destinations. We'll leave bkk as soon as this long weekend is over for a 2 month drive up to kamphaeng phet, pitsananulok, lampang, lampoon, Chiang rai, Chiang mai then through isaan along the Mekong.
You don’t see everything that I do on these trips. I stop in lots of little towns. Usually the beginning of the trip I try to get wherever I’m starting as fast as possible. I typically only do a couple hours each day. But some days on the strip, I’ve had to write a lot farther because I’m covering so much distance on this whole loop. Thanks for watching.

SUPER good video… Arriving BKK Aug. 30… Do you ride your bike in the city or just when touring around the country… I rented an ADV 160 when I was in Hua Hin last year… Great scooter… 🙏🏻
Honestly, I don’t write it much around the city unless I have somewhere specific to go. I typically take BTS because it’s only about eight minute walk from where I live. The bike doesn’t get a ton of use, but it’s got almost 10,000 km on it already and it’s not even a year that I’ve owned it. Hope you have a great time in Bangkok.

I think part of the problem is you have a lot of foreigners that I’ve never ridden a motorbike and they learn in this country. I am being careful, thank you for your concern.

I’ve put 11 1/2 thousand kilometers on it over the last 10 months. All over Thailand. I haven’t had any issues with it whatsoever. I might make a separate video reviewing it at some point.

I have been riding with the high beam on during the day for 30 years. It’s easier for people to see me this way. I turn it off at night. Just during the day for extra visibility.

Hi Serge, loving the channel. How did you find the Honda ADV 160. I am looking at a big few months around Thailand and am trying to decide between the 160 or 350. What are your thoughts.
I’ve owned this bike for a little over 10 months. I believe I have almost 12,000 km on it. Absolutely zero problems. The bikes I had in the US mostly 600 cc sport bikes, BMW R1200 GS adventure bikes, and stuff like that. I bought the 160 because I live in Bangkok. I think the 350s are a little too fat getting around the city. Also, once you get to that size, I feel you’re better off with a real motorcycle. However, if those are your choices and you’re going to spend a couple of months, I think you’ll find the 350 a lot more Comfortable and capable. Out at about 114 km an hour, but 106-108 is about as fast as I’d like to push it on prolonged basis. I just feel that the 350 cc end up scooters are bloated.

I’ve been writing motorcycles for over 30 years and I’m a big fan of Honda. I think I’m going to buy the Honda NX 500 at the end of this year. Take a look at that model.
@@LifewithSerg thanks for the response, i'll have to check it out. that's an updated CB500X isn't it? Being a big tall guy with long legs, seat height is a huge factor for me. I've been looking at the BMW R 1250GS because of that.
Pretty good daily mileage on that scoot. Riding in the rain? Keep your feet and your crotch dry and all else will be okay. Never been to Chiang Rai, may head up there next trip, looks nice.

It’s actually a Motowolf. I also don’t put my iPhone in there. I bought a cheap Hono android phone, and I use that strictly for navigation.

I can't ride on a scooter more than 3 hours before my butt really starts hurting. Do you have any advice to make the ride better? I realize you can get a custom sear or maybe wear gel insert shorts underneath, but any other pointers?
Well, let me start off by saying that I bruised the hell out of my coccyx 8 months ago and it’s still not fully healed. It adds a little more discomfort, but here is my advice. I’ve been writing motorcycles for over 30 years. The trick is just to get off the bike every hour and stretch. I don’t care how comfortable of a seat you have, Three hours is just too long. I try to get off the bike every one to two hours.

I can go about 250km on a tank and it’s about 2&0 baht to fill it.
