Excellent job staying impartial. My personal knee jerk reaction to this concept was something along the lines of "interesting, but I'll never give Facebook (by any other name either) the kind of access to my life that this would require. Overall excellent presentation and explanation of the concept.

One thing I see missing from this discussion is privacy. It seems as though our thoughts and dreams might be a bastion of privacy that would be breached in the world you describe. Is that something we are ready to do?
I can see from a teaching standpoint the attractiveness of many things you describe. At the same time, I wonder how much more interaction both students and instructors are ready to deal with.

Privacy is one thing, security is another... Mankind will always have those people who would seek to invade someone else's mind in search of blackmail, industrial espionage, or some other kind of leverage. This, in my mind would be akin to a form of rape, where it would be a forced mental invasion, rather than
      a sexual one.

Ironically for something called "Explaining the Future", the suit-and-tie talking-at-the-podium-with-a-microphone format feels rather nostalgic. Which I think makes it a good choice.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, it gives a rather a nostalgic feel from when humans bothered about their appearance. I really enjoyed the suit-and-tie, podium and microphone setting giving a great presentation explaining the future. It was marvellous! :) Very refreshing from all the silliness I have seen lately.

Considering the first part of your video, it was not good that Zuck did not acknowledge those that have already addressed much of this information. Great content!

When Mark says, "we'll be able to express ourselves", he means, we will be able to do so as long as the opinions expressed are opinions the machine(big tech, big meds, big news media and big government) agrees with.

Sad, but true. Expressing ourselves freely is something that doesn't belong to the future but to the past.

Who owns the Metaverse? ... is the same entity(ies) who will own your online existence, and by extension, your work-life ... essentially you.

    • @Kynareth6

Who owns the Internet is the the same kind of question. I hope that everyone will own their stuff - meaning their avatar, their house, their things, but not shared spaces. It should be possibly decentralized. I do think that the Metaverse will gradually become true, but it won't be BIG earlier than the 2040s. People will probably stick to foldable smartphones and tablets for the near future, but increasingly augmented with AI. Rendering high-definition 16K per eye VR worlds on standalone headsets is much too much for 2020s technology.

Great video. Interesting learning about the history and past predictions. I definitely think that ubiquitous computing will be more prominent in the short term. I'm definitely more looking forward to AR than the metaverse. Ideally, I would like to use the internet to aid my experience of reality, not escape from it. It's possible to do that now, but the metaverse does seem like it would be a new paradigm. I view Zuckerberg as a malevolent actor, and cannot help but think this might be more of a scheme to take advantage of people who want to escape to further line his own pockets.

From my viewpoint ''Explaining The Future'' is Fascinating and Scary at the same time. It seems to herald a Revolution which could significantly change even how we exist from day to day. We need to, IMHO, decide how far and how quickly we proceed along this path if we we are allowed the opportunities to do so. In addition the vast majority of us , me included , will be dimly aware of this unless we have people like your good self to explain the steps and to distinguish the achievable possibilities from self-serving marketing hype. Thank you for trying to do this for us.

The thing is that the metaverse is so easy to screw up as an idea, just a simple UX malfunction / oversight would kill it, the perfect idea is some open source network where EVERY object is a program itself interacting with the open source framework and other programs
think of a “paper sheet” as a program where has some functionalities in the metaverse, it can be written it can be set on a wall etc, the interactions between the objects ( or programs ) is what makes or breaks the metaverse , if they have to develop id hope they just copy exactly what ready player one has done in the movie, also i think VR is born without a future, AR is where its at, argumentations of life thats what makes something useful, great video btw!

Suit and tie - not all will change. Great lecture with good humour
, learnt a lot - government will attack internet gaming as too many people will be impoverished and become a social burden. Government will also ban cryptocurrency as China has - a national currency makes us part of a team even if we hate our team mates. Clearly, some nations will use AI etc against their own people and against other nations and their people. China,Russia,Israel come to mind as active players. However the 1956 partnership known as Five Eyes is spending a fortune keeping tabs on what other nations are doing and likely keeping their powder dry on their own offensive capabilities. However, countries not using Latin script but having many speakers of English probably have a natural protection to the depth of harm that can be done to them.

A very thought provoking presentation on the Metaverse Chris. Wearing a VR headset can make some people sick, we rely so much on spatial awareness to enable us to function, I've worked with people who are hearing impaired that explain without a hearing aid their balance suffers! You mention as a gaming platform, can you imagine the scenario of being in a first person shooter game where it's so realistic, witnessing the absolute horror of killing other players in a conflict and what it could do to them, there are people now who can't differentiate between fact and fiction. There would have to be systems in place to protect everyone's safety i.e being hacked whilst using the software, or state players who could harvest thoughts, secrets or dreams to use as a weapon or torture, HG Wells 1984 anyone.
Me I'll just stick to reality oh and have a nice conversation over dinner with family or friends, no smart phones allowed :)

My primary concern with the growing interconnectedness of technology with biology is the current observable tendency of unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of - or simply vandalize - other people's data. Unless there is a massive shift in detection of - and punishment for - technological abuse of others, we will never be able to enjoy technology without constant fear of abuse (which empowers a whole other industry based on separating us from our assets in exchange for providing us with the illusion of protection).

Not sure why I flinch so bad seeing you hold a microphone...? Great content though. I often discuss this topic with my grandkids. I picture the metaverse, ( this version that Zuckerberg is trying to stuff down our throats, while implying that he thought of it...) as an invasive, unpleasant version of an extreme nerd's life... not unlike the episodes of South Park when the boys retreat into the basement, ( for an unhealthy period of time ), to battle a World of Warcraft character.
Whether it's a body suit, BCI or a VR headset... personal hygiene and food, not to mention a tangible means of income, would put off all but the most cringe-worthy, basement dwelling, mommy-supported humans. I'm sure that the peripheral economy will sell them a sensory suit with a diaper built in... but... Yuck... I'll pass on the metaverse. I am however, anxious to see more robots made to take care of the crushing number of us that are stumbling into our old age... Humans won't be doing it....
Perhaps a 360 deg., wrap-around screen for gaming will suffice?

Really a thought provoking talk. I watched the video couple times and came up several concepts to integrate into my own research and teaching. Problems with ease of use and ease of integration hampered efforts with platforms like Second Life for teaching at my institution. I think that the Neuromancer (Gibson)/Matrix concept of the metaverse isn't particularly helpful or feasible at this point (like you said). Neil Stephenson's "metaverse" (origin of the term) or an augmented ubiquitous environment as described by Vernor Vinge, author and professor of CS, is a more likely route for digital reality in the medium term. Again, great job on these. I hope you look at AR/MR at some point on one of your channels.

I think you're pretty spot on with there being some kind of gaming platform/marketplace and I think probably well before 10 years time. It will be second life, hopefully with some common formats/standards, but also with lots of grifting and scamming. As always, the big problems are not technical, but rather the same old things that have dogged humanity for centuries. Very interesting and insightful video! Re; Neural links, even after decades of neuroscience we are not even on the verge of whole brain understanding!
The human brain is not a static system of connections. The brain is constantly being remodelled, the dendrites which receive the neurotransmitters from other neurons, growing new branches and changing connections to other neurons, sometimes within hours. Also the role of brain glial cells (of which there are several types) further complicates matters affecting neurotransmission and synaptic connections.
I doubt that neural links will ever progress past a rudimentary level, thank goodness in my opinion.

Sony Computer Entertainment tried something similar with "Playstation Home" on the PS3 back in 2008 ... it was quite good for its time but they killed it off in 2015. They had virtual concerts, games, clubhouses etc. with integrated in-world game launches. It was a good concept but they failed to maintain delivery of meaningful content. As technology and more importantly the number of content creators has flourished, it might take off in an open marketplace much like 2nd life. Hard to tell, although I certainly don't want to expose my neurons to a company of such shady business practices.

Hmmm, wearing an implant in my brain so I can connect to someone else via a computer has me worried ! What if you were trying to connect to a friend and dialled the wrong number ? You could find yourself connected mentally to a politician and have all of your consciousness sucked into the vacuum on the other end of the connection 🤣
I think any Cybernetic work will be based on medical needs for the immediate future and Robotics will really kick along as we need to develop machines to build / repair things like space stations and bases on the moon and mars .

makes me wonder if Bill Gates has dropped the ball or if he has stuff working in the background for minecraft that I believe he bought for this very thing, as it is fully interactive, and decentralized (anyone can set up their own server) and moddable so you can ad the ability for players to insert things like billboards that you can display and interact with webpages and even watch youtube videos in, as well as talk to people that are near you virtually with out everyone on the server being heard making it hard to hear someone, as well as it being 3D sound (ie they move to your left while talking and you now hear them in your left ear as well as walking further they get quieter and quieter the further they get, and items in the world effect the sound too, like walls dampening that sound level even faster. Want more than blocks, look at architectcraft and lycanites mobs as they incorporate lots of various angles in the mobs, and architectcraft adds rounded objects like round pillars and archways ect, (slopes upgrade, as slopes just gave you angled blocks for sooth pyramids and smoother hills)
someone puts a webcam option where your face appears on the face of the character as it being like a screen they then can see your emotion while talking, and each build with its interaction can offer a real world shop portal in that virtual environment, and it is possible to make a single server with a cluster network that can handle millions of users exploring and interacting with a world 7 times larger than the earth,
one thing I have not tried and want to, is the educational edition of minecraft where you can do chemistry and electronics inside the game learning about them via simulation. that and the very basic method while it feels odd to someone first seeing it like lego block world, you get used to it quickly and don't even notice it, and the placement and building or modifying a whole world to your taste is easy enough for anyone to do, unlike what ever that last virtual world used to have you do to make and import things into it. (also you grind real time in the game doing instead of just replicating a thing you made over and over so it diminishes the value on them vs the builds and creations in a minecraft world. though there are mods to copy and paste the builds not only across that world but across servers, too, (and mods to allow just teleporting from one server to another carrying your belongings too. the servers just all have to share the same mod to allow them to interact like this. )

This is very thorough analysis. Also for the same reasons is why when I see both AR and VR - I always bet Augmented Reality. Actually I think "Mixed Reality" is what really is the good term, just some companies started to use the term I also used and they do it a bit differently... But TL;DR: "Enhancing what exists" is always winning over "building everything from scratch" - at least until we totally become cyborg people.

I truly enjoyed this video, Chris. Lots of deep matters to consider about the future of humans and the digital "world". Love the audacity of Barnatt's Law--I think you are spot on, and congrats for being the first to articulate it. I'm very glad you are giving this channel such an interesting and relevant reboot. Yes, those prior 3D videos are impressive, but I'd much rather have the relaxed and witty personal Chris talk to me from a podium with a mic in his hand. Just what this viewer needed from this channel after two crazy pandemic years. Wherever that inspiration came from, I'm glad you heeded it, and I'm stoked to see the next three videos in this series. Oh, and you look so nice in a suit!
Finally, thanks for not doing mid-roll ads. I always let your pre and post ads run to completion and hope that makes up a bit for the revenue you lose. If you do need to make a change someday to run those ads, I will still be a faithful viewer. Stay well and enjoy your work.

I like cool tech as much as any other guy, but this VR thing is not something we need. There are so many other areas where existing technology could vastly improve quality of life, but ofter human factor gets in a way. I'd rather see companies trying to find solutions to battle that, instead of bringing fancy futuristic things in our lives to earn money and take more control. I'd like us to stop for a moment and make the most of the technology we already have, before pouring even more work and resources in R&D of something we may never need.

In 10 or 20 years time, people will watch Mark Zuckerberg's keynote presentation on VR and howl with laughter. The same way I've watched videos from the early 90's of people prophesising about the "information superhighway". Elements of the 90's videos have turned out to be correct but their visions of the future always seem packaged up in 90's looking technology. And it's always this way; the computers in Star Trek look like a mainframe computer from the 1960s.

What a great (re)start to the channel! It really feels like you're actually having a good bit of fun doing it, too, so it's quite pleasant to watch.
I have some mixed feelings about Metaverse. Or I guess I should say, Meta/Facebook. I quite like the idea of Metaverse, but unfortunately I'm just not comfortable with the company behind it. I expect that even if it takes off, and VR becomes extremely comfortable and highly immersive, I probably won't get too involved. I guess if we could say Metaverse is like Microsoft Windows, I'm waiting for someone to make Linux.
I think you're right though, that Metaverse probably will become big for gaming. I don't suppose it'll be so big for business since, as you said, many people just can't use it comfortably. Why be uncomfortable in VR when you can just as well voice and video chat? But for those who can, VR definitely offers some great gaming potential.
As for BCI's, that's been my dream for decades. I remember trying something some 15 years ago, some kind of headband like a super cheap EEG, to read brain activity to control my computer. Either it didn't work, or I never figured it out. It would've been one way communication had it worked anyways, oh well. Still, if BCI technology were safe, comfortable and inexpensive, I'd be one of the first to give it a go. I'd only be concerned with privacy and ownership of course. I'd hope the whole system would belong to me just like my computer belongs to me, and only does what I want it do and isn't spying on my mind for the benefit of some big company. Letting someone enter the privacy of your mind and directly access your thoughts or feelings or intentions, is an enormously huge matter of trust, ya know? Still, the possibilities are very appealing. What I'd give to just share my dreams with people instead of having to type up lengthy descriptions of what happened while I slept... or what it might allow people to accomplish in psychotherapy if patient and doctor can more directly experience eachother's minds. Very exciting stuff!
