    It is a shame but it seems the Artemis Program is more about politics and being politically correct. People should explore science and new frontiers simply based on their merit, education and training and physical fitness. Gender or skin color should not be a factor. As for a base on the moon, it is vitally important we establish a permanent moon base as a prerequisite to going to mars. The moon is much closer to home (easier rescue of something goes wrong) and building a functional moon base will teach us how to live in extreme harsh environments. I believe this is absolutely necessary prior to venturing out to Mars.

      ALL government programs are politically driven. As technology advances, private space travel and space programs will become more economical and practical. This is what will REALLY drive the expansion of mankind into space, not the latest political whim or fashion. The Apollo program, as great and as inspiring as it was, was motivated mostly by the competition between the US and USSR during the Cold War.

      1. yes ,🧐,..governents are (and should be, as long as we need them) entirely political phenomena
      2 none of what you list is even remotely "practical" to say the least nor an "economical" advantage for anyone but those few capitalist superghouls, as those grotesque mafia dynamics keep being rule as that game goes on.
      Rest assured. Mars! nobody is going to fly there ANY time soon. close to impossible.
      the good news is that, since you wanna see mankind thrive and reach for the stars, that mindset is needed down here on earth right now and we're in for a good ride.
      Everyone of you is critically needed rn to get grandiose 21st century shit together here on 🌍 🔱
      competition? is a 1950s.. conflict neuroses, not a rational framework towards anything really, co-operation is.
      it is also very, very bad on mars. The weather.. coocked -frozen, coocked-frozen i dunno.. very. very horrible place to "go to" and then trying to stay for i dunno why "exploratory" reason. Especially while trying to survive on your way there already..

      i believe it is also essential to focus on the science too, but it is important that space is open to all humans, not just the dominant class or category.
      Yeah, NASA is prioritising it too much, but people are also too up in arms about it. they should be far more up in arms about the lack of vision and innovation in the NASA launch vehicle. the SLS is a cool rocket, but disappointing. they'll complete the token missions, but then they should either redesign or contract a reusable vehicle.

      Scientific or engineering achievement is often (not always) a by-product of politics. The trick is to be aligned with the politics when necessary.

    A massive shame the channel didn't meet your expectations. In just a few months you've put out some great insight upon us and I am really grateful for that. I look forward to any future EtF content, be it monthly, bimonthly, yearly or something else.
    And I think you hit the nail on why we would want to go there and why the argument "shouldn't we spend money on something else" is a flawed concept. The Moon, being visible every night, would inspire many to follow as soon as one can look up and think "right now, there is someone/something up there", if we're able to break this barrier, then anything else would feel as attainable as the Moon.
    And we could also use the resources from space exploration to solve our current issues on Earth, this isn't just a simple expense just because. How many wars have been fought for resources? How many times a country has been disrupted by external influences because of their resources? Solving a resources crisis would put those out of picture and suddenly it would be a lot easier to tackle in those humanitarian issues, furthermore any new technology developed during this could also directly or indirectly solve an issue we have on Earth: New medical treatments, cheaper transportation, compact and low cost infrastructure? The sky won't be the limit anymore as long as we keep striving for further beyond.

    Dear Chris,
    All your content is greatly appreciated on both channels, however I undestand that you need to balance your personal time resource with the number of views which makes perfect sense.
    Regarding a moonbase, as you said the Geopolitics of the day plays a large part in determining the level of commitment and unfortunately, looking at the current global situation, it will probably be military incentives that drive us there faster than scientific curiosity.
    Regardless, human curiosity will always be a deep emotional driver for the species, we are born explorers and if we can see it, we have to reach for it.
    Just as the earliest boats took to the seas in order to see what lies on the other side, we will inevitably take our first baby steps out to the first stepping stone that shines above us, then after having established a firm hold we will reach out further and faster.
    There may also be profit from Helium-3 mining to drive fusion reactors and many other hidden treasures to find when we finally return to stay.
    Thanks as always.

    I have something to say regarding the issue with spending money on this versus helping the hungry.
    The whole reason poverty is ongoing is because people who can barely feed themselves are having kids. That said, if we pour money into feeding the hungry, then they will pop out even more kids and the cycle will repeat unsustainably.
    Might as well invest in the future of the species.

    Thanks so much for another great video. I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was a child - I didn't understand much of it then, but I was sooo excited by its depiction of the (relatively) near future, including the Clavius moonbase. Then came the first moon landing. By the end of the 1960s, anything seemed possible. So I was somewhat disappointed when the moon landings ended in December 1972, but nevertheless I was sure that humans would be back. Now it's half a century later and I'm still waiting, but at least the pace is finally picking up (Artemis program delays notwithstanding).

    Although I agree completely that we should strive to become a multi-planetary species so we don't have all of our eggs in one basket (Earth), we are not really running out of anything crucial on Earth. We can mine and recycle metals indefinitely, and for all practical purposes, the energy available to us on Earth is unlimited when all sources are considered: nuclear fission, nuclear fusion (eventually), geothermal, solar, and wind.

    As for the Artemis Program 🤡 " to land a woman and a person of colour on the moon " I don't know whether to laugh or cry it's so patronising. The basic idea is great, letting women & people of colour establish a safe environment whilst I have a hot cup of tea, and a crumpet. Then I can claim discrimination when it's nice and safe for me to go.

    2 options: 1. we begin to see outside this planet. OR 2. we implement ways to prevent the uncontrolled growth of the human population on Earth.
    Basically, in absence or low gravity, in almost ideal environments for experiments is where we can find solutions to diseases, modify or improve our bodies, find new sources of energy or make better use of it, investigate food alternatives (energy for our bodies) to change the primitive animals that devour food that we have become in this time.

    I think this channel could benefit from exploring the ample predictions made by the best science fiction writers. It is with correlating their predictions with the progress being made on each field and the way society is evolving. As far as the future of human society is concerned, there are far more dystopian predictions than utopian ones. This may be due to the flaws in human nature, or the statistics of thermodynamics which can be very roughly interpreted as suggests there are more ways for things to go wrong than right, or the odds of the universe are stacked against us.
    In any case scifi, provides a rich source of material on which to guess our future, based on the evolution of different areas of science. It is worth considering which areas have made the greatest progress and which have not. Great strides have been made in biology, chemistry, cybernetics, AI and material science, but we are still earth bound by our lack of progress in propulsion and energy generation. So while we have robots and thinking machines, and even ray guns, we are struggling to get further than our moon. Trapped apparently by the unbreakable laws of physics.
    I think it is worth comparing our current cutting edge state of play with tge predictions of the scifi writers, and see just how far we have come and how far we yet have to travel. For example robotic technology as exemplified by the technology of Boston Dynamics, suggests humans have made great strides in the last 30 years, yet its deficiencies become apparent when compared with the functionality of a simply insect, like the common house fly. We have some of the building blocks, we just can't put them together efficiently yet, and there is still something missing in our understanding of AI.

    The problem of ' starvation ' caused by overpopulation? Whilst we spend money on space exploration.
    In the West a combination of many social changes ( feminism & consumerism at the top of the list ) has resulted in a dramatic fall in the West's population.
    It is of the utmost importance that feminism & consumerism is forced upon Africa, Brazil, Mexico, and the Indian sub continent.
    The resulting fall in population. All forms of cultural belonging must be destroyed, as it has been in the West. The world's total population will then plummet, resulting in food for all. Unfortunately, there will always be a gap between the rich a poor, this happens (d) even in the near perfect USSR

    Tis a shame you are not going quite so hard on this new monthly format, but it is understandable. Finally the algorithm did not completely bury this video even though I was looking forward to it, it just takes time to get the half hour spare to give this my full attention. I think because I am on the other side of the planet it just gets into my subscription listings at sub optimal times. At least that's my current theory.
    About the moon base though... it's an interesting philosophical point you make on whether we will be content as a species to live on one planet or push for something more. Certainly with our current technology and budgets, manned missions to other stars is currently impossible, but if we aim well and push hard in the right way, it might be possible after all in a finite amount of time. The idea of being remote and dark at first is an interesting concept and could bridge the way to future manned stuff or even cyborged stuff. Never really thought of it from that angle. :-)

    I never understand why they have to specify first "woman" or "Person of colour" on the moon etc.
    While I understand it's a milestone in history etc. Their aim should always be to send the most qualified persons regardless of race, colour, religion or gender.

    When you say "we did this" or "we explore xyz" this is actaully not true because most of "we" sit on out butts and watch TV all day. More people have been in the NBA than have climbed Mt Everest and more people are brain surgeons than have climbed K2. Hardly any one of us wants to do the motions required to land on the moon. That said, if "we" could go to the moon in relative luxury, with most things automated and with a travel guide, and if we could afford it, then a slightly larger proportion of "we" instead of the "superman freaks" may actually want to do it.

    Chris, an insightful and thought provoking discussion. I hope you can forgive me my narrow critique of one small piece of this project.
    I can be a very cynical observer when a goal or component of such an undertaking has to politicize the project by declaring a woman and a person of color will be included. The reality is that many women and persons of color will be involved. Shame on our leaders for being so obvious. A project of this magnitude should be staffed by the best and brightest independent of gender or race. I should think that candidates would want to be chosen based on their intellect. But in the interest of being open minded, I submit to the politics whenever the magnitude of such an endeavor requires public support, even though what I am seeing is nothing more than buying votes to stay in office.
    Beyond my cynicism, I am only saddened because I won’t live long enough to see the results of these first steps to break the chains that bind us to this place we call earth. Again, thank you for sharing you thoughts on such an important subject regarding the future of the human family.

    Once more you have put a lot of time and your expertise into informing us, your viewers, into present and future technologies. What we do as a species on this planet is come to the decision that we have to look after planet earth so that it can support the populations that exist now. We can no longer take it for granted that everything is going to remain the same. We have successfully brought our present environment to a position where we need to accept that there are too many people trying to use a deminishing supply of materials that we rely on to survive. No matter what we can do on another planet we have to realise that eventually anyone who leaves this planet will need to come back again, no matter what they eventually manage to do out there. Thanks for your continued effort in creating and showing us what we can look forward to in the future of electronic advancements.

    Two major talking points here. The first is our natural need to find places better than we already occupy. The very thing that took our species out of Africa. Finding new and better pastures with more resources that make life easier. The moon is a very hostile environment and I'm sure that is why it has been dismissed as almost worthless. Had it been lust farming land, with clear running rivers and pristine oceans. As a species, we would likely be living there in large numbers. The "Go West" syndrome of American colonisation.
    Next would be the availability of mineral wealth making it worthwhile to overcome the hostile environment. Here on the very dynamic earth, many of our resources have been concentrated by natural processes. Be they volcanic or the result of water movement and weather. None of which are applicable to lunar geological history. Making meteorites and asteroid impacts the only reliable mineral resources that do not require processing tons of lunar surface for a modest return. Probably why roving exploration is the first step of lunar exploitation.

    Just wandered back to look into _this_ channel of Yours.
    Glad that You made this particular episode - _because nobody else will_ . The channel is 'doomed', because looking into the future, _realistically_ never exites 'the middle of the bell curve'.
    Yet, topics rise -seemingly out of nowhere - and _some_ viewers will be tuned into certain subjects - long before they turn into 'a trend', when suddenly many deem the topic worthwhile.
    Just do videos when You 'can't hold back any longer', because You really came to some sort of realization, You'd like to share with others.
    On the topic: I noticed these projects, casually around the time of reports of detailed Lunar spectrometric mineralogical mapping in 2020, emphasizing e.g. Helium-3 deposits (without having built yet any commercial fusion reactors...) - I thought, resources may trigger a race for their harvest. Reading a bit into it, I noticed that the surface of the Moon had also been considered from _a military perspective_ during the Cold War which makes a race to return to the Moon surface more likely - especially when international affairs are breaking down, arguably since around 2011...
    Sure enough, it turns out that the Sino-Russian Lunar program - based on the Soviet era LUNA-GLOB, reformulated plans from 1997 for a permanent base in in the 'Boguslavsky crater', (curiously near the South Pole) appears to have been accelerated. Either 'despite sanctions' - or _because_ of them.
    US NASA Artemis I is in preparation as we speak, so is LUNA 25 (a robotic lander), still scheduled for end of September - despite news of a potential start back in July, and recently that it may be postponed altogether due to concerns over the landing procedure.
    In any case, there is clearly _a race_ going on and it is not about gender or ethnicity, but establishing a permanent, robotic base. China has utilized converted barges for sea based launching since 2019 and recently begun testing vertical landing technology - while the costly international collaboration of the ISS literally falls out of the sky.
    While a digression, I would offer a counter-argument on 'futurism', reminding that the last 20.000 years have shown that 'sustainability' is a problem of modern industrialized societies - while all civilizations collapse, eventually - either by war and civil war or due to an affinity for severe viral infections in urban centers along trade routes.
    Nomadic societies like the Siberian Nenets, however seem to _maintain_ their population in an equilibrium.
    Arguably that 'culture of balance' is a more relevant 'technology' than 'poking one's eye out in order to see, digitally in the dark vaccum of space' - at least as a priority before actual manned colonization - e.g. we haven't settled a hostile Antarctica or the ocean floors either, despite vast resources - while robotic deep sea footage did stimulate our sense of life...

    Chris, please keep making these videos. They are surely "food" for thought. I think first we must learn to live together in peace without some other country's leader deciding to destroy another country. Our governments must learn to use the best and smartest people, not be "politically" correct. There should be no gender or color in progress, just ability and the desire to succeed. We must learn to live and work in peace with everyone to advance in life, either here on Earth or in space.

    I appreciate all the content that you've posted Chris, it's always thought provoking as well as being entertaining. If you only posted a video every couple of months that would be fine, it should be done to suit you.
    Should we have a moon base I think the answer is yes it would really help to push scientific advances further, it'll need to be funded by private companies as opposed to governments. I remember the start of the space race those were exciting times, the things that were achieved the triumphs and unfortunately the tragedy's helped to push the technology along. The moon landings were political to put the first man on the moon, it was the cost of the Apollo program that finished it off, the space shuttle program was amazing such a shame it couldn't have been developed further. Exploration is a part of being human it's in our psyche, always pushing the boundaries as to what can be done. Hopefully the outer space treaty of 1967 will always remain in force outside of geopolitical wrangling. :)

    I believe you raised a very interesting question: why has humankind not solved the poverty problem? I am interested in technology and space exploration. But, humans should be able to do more than one thing at a time. After all, there are about seven billion of us, so some multitasking should be possible.

    • @JustAThought01
      @JustAThought01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q. How do we end poverty?
      A. Make sure anyone who wants a job to earn their living has a socially productive job earning a living wage.

    • @JustAThought01
      @JustAThought01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q. What is the problem with full employment?
      A. The law of supply and demand cause economic inflation when we approach 100% employment.

    • @JustAThought01
      @JustAThought01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q. How can we control economic inflation?
      A. We can implement an inflation tax to remove excess money from the economy when inflation exceeds the target. The inflation tax is a variable rate on top of a progressive individual and corporate income tax. Tax can be adjusted rapidly as inflation occurs.

    • @JustAThought01
      @JustAThought01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The objective is to balance the for profit segment of the economy with the government funded social services segment of the economy to maintain full employment.

    As someone, who has been fascinated with science-fiction since the original Star Trek series aired, I don't think we should build a Moonbase because we "need" to but because we want to expand our human experience. For example, when I was younger, there was nothing like riding down the road far away from home on a motorcycle and experience the sunrise. For all practical purposes, I didn't really need to be there. Now I'm not saying that there is or isn't a need. I "suspect" most astronauts go into space because they wouldn't pass up the opportunity to do so. Personally, I'll be glad for us to build a moonbase, for whatever reason. The idea, for me, is simply so cool! Looking forward to your next excellent video on this channel.

    I really appreciate this video, it gives me quality material to feed my thoughts on possibilities and joining some dots. Long term it looks like two subspecies of humans - those prepared to live on Mars with its different gravity, light, air and those on earth. I wonder if Moon would be kind of "coffeshop" with environment good enough for both races to stay in the same place for longer time 🤔

    Some thoughts on topics discussed:
    - Putting the first female and the first person of colour on the moon: We're all the same species regardless of identity. Scientific pursuits and accomplishments should be lauded for their principle with a person's identity being secondary to that. That's absolutely not to say that a female or person of colour shouldn't be allowed to follow the same pursuits as male caucasian scientists, because that would just be rude and disrespectful towards people who aren't. I just want to make sure that both accomplishments should be celebrated equally and my hope is that one doesn't completely overshadow the other (even though with the recent display of people who DEMAND identity be more important than the actual subject at hand, becoming more and more common place).
    - Spending money on going to space: Absolutely in favour of it. It isn't China, or America, or any other country's priority to solve poverty and hunger in _other_ nations. Is it good and virtuous to help? Again, absolutely, however the reality of it is that the governments of other nations need to sort the problems of their own countries out, or in the case of countries who's people are getting thinner and living in shacks (if they're lucky to even have _that_) while their politicians are getting fatter and living in mansions, it is a problem that their own citizens are going to need to sort out.
    I certainly hope that over the course of however many billions of years, things don't unfold as "Well it's a shame we dragged our heels on space exploration. Now it's too late to start. But hey, doesn't it make you feel good that we finally solved poverty and world hunger?"
    - Building a moon base: I am 110% all for it. If we're going to eventually leave earth in favour of interstellar/intergalactic/interdimensional(?) travel, it's a journey that's going to need a LOT of steps taken. Building a moon base is one of those steps.
    When I was younger, I often imagined/hoped we would get to the point where one of our steps would be to gradually build outwards from our planet space station after space station after space station to live and survive on. Perhaps that's one of the steps we need to get to in order to reach our goal.

    Feedback: By comparison with 100s of other TH-cam channels that give lectures and video essays the format used here looks dated. You don't need fancy graphics so much but what I'm seeing is a man standing beside a computer giving a powerpoint style presentation in one take. The only eye candy is occasional cuts to a presentation slide with a wall of text. I'm sorry but my feedback is I don't think what worked for you years ago for an audience of middle aged middle managers and company execs in fancy old English houses is going to cut it with a TH-cam audience.

    • @ExplainingTheFuture
      @ExplainingTheFuture  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this feedback. But you are wrong about the demographic of the audiences I have spoken to in the past. My intention here -- and it may have failed -- is/was to re-create a lecture experience in video. There is not a single "TH-cam audience" . . .

    I think that building a base on the moon would serve us well and prepare us for a journey to mars .
    I think we need to address the issues we have on earth like people starving and pollution before we worry about setting foot on another planet - and that is if we can stop killing each other .
    I do live in hope that one day every human will live in peace ,happiness,harmony and combine our intellectual powers to further our dreams of space travel , maybe it could be the one thing that can unite us .

    My immediate response before pressing play is 'Can nations even agree to co-operate well enough & long enough to justify such a project? I can't see nations agreeing long enough and patting each other on the back before unwarranted aggressive competition sneaks in and sours things.' I'd be hopeful for nations to agree and develop on shared projects but the human race is the actual problem. I can hope and wish... We all can. 🙂🙂🙂

    As for moonbase colonization, I presume there is the problem of moon not having the natural defense against asteroids which could be a strong reason why we didn't go to it yet. Idk.

    I think it is more logical and sensitive to say "what if EEUU spends it's military budget (U$S 700.000.000.000) to end world hunger instead of thinking about using space exploration's budget for it". What if instead of maintaining 250 military bases around the world in supposedly "sovereign and free countries" they spend that money for food.

    YES, I agree with you we will run out of raw materials in time, and the moon ir the nearest place to look for them it had water some time ago. The other place is Mars that 6month journey and we have not landed on it yet just a probe; The moon is a good place to start exploring the universe you will need less fuel ft take-off so we can build bigger spacecraft for people and cargo, etc. but that will be 50 may be 100s of years ahead i just wish I could see it i am 80 now no chance

    Chiming in late (Jan 2023), watching this video has given me something to think about. One big issue we have is that of gravity. Gravity is one of the most critical things needed for our bodies to remain healthy and survive. Just look at the astronauts who return to Earth after an extended mission in space. If there is some way of generating artificial gravity (like spinning the craft for the centrifugal force and living on the inside of the outer shell), I believe that could very well be a gateway to building stations in space. Or for that matter, generation ships with a new civilization living there. These ships would in effect become smaller versions of Earth with their own closed systems making them self sustaining which would be a huge bonus for further exploration. Something that would require much work, time and co-operation from the entire human species.

  • @nickgangadis8679
    @nickgangadis8679 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should we stay or should we go? Imo, it doesn’t make much of a difference to most of us. You just touched the main issue briefly when you’re talking about the Apollo missions and Cold War. It’s mostly politics and the exploitation to most of us by a minority elite which will treat us as slaves, as they do since time immemorial. So, either we stay here or work day and night in a factory/base/lab/office etc on the moon, Mars or Alpha Centauri is the same struggle. Just the landscape will be different.
