Congratulations on the 100k subs George. I've been enjoying your videos since day 1, and they just keep getting better. Indulging yourself? C'mon, you're indulging US, your fans, viewers, and patrons! Your family is spot-on. We're rooting for you. Really enjoyable learning more of your background to understand how you got where you are and how Soup came to be.
@@soupclassicmotoring there is nothing, such videos are a pleasure to watch, only the scale is too small, rage rover, Mercedes, 2 hours one pleasure, but the lotus car is super, but the series are too small, but you don't really want to wait!
I knew it....I knew it....I knew it. The high production quality of all those Merc and RR videos always screamed out 'Professional Television production' background. The camera work, the lighting, the wry articulate commentary all a work of art. It was fascinating to hear your journey so far and all the fabulous projects you've been involved with. This viewer is rooting for you as well as the cars btw. I admire your 'just do it' approach, at the end of the day a man built it, so a man should be able to fix it, right! Whilst admiring your grit and determination at tackling jobs on the Merc in freezing conditions I always felt for you having to contend with those bitter conditions so I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing you produce some videos of you restoring the VW in sunnier conditions one day. Now that would be grand so it would.
Soup is one of the very few channels I never get bored halfway through and think to myself "I'll finish it later". Seldom does one of these videos get paused.
Such a cool Q&A, fell in love with the channel stumbling on the Range Rover restoration, please, keep the content coming, hi from a French guy living in Cork with a heart in Louth.
George congrats on the 100k subs. I’m a big Patreon fan over a year and half now and never disappointed on any of the episodes or the back chat something is always learned and interestingly talked about. Good to hear about your past that brought here to this point. Really good Q & A thanks for sharing. You’ve inspired me also in making my mechanical content which I’m doing right now. Cheers to you with my virtual Guinness you do look like a Guinness man like me self 😂
Absolutely inspirational sharing session George. Have been watching since ep 1 and always seen a keen creative streak to everything I’ve seen. Love it all and many thanks. Cheers Brendan (Perth, Western Australia)
Really enjoyed this. It was nice getting know a bit more about you. Just wanted to say that your channel gave me loads of inspiration to finish my Land Rover defender that, I managed to do a complete body swap/restoration of in 6 months. Watching you gave me the courage to keep chugging on. So thank you sir and I’ve enjoyed every video.

Sat here for the full hour! Felt like 20 minutes. Oh and as far as the weekly vs bi-weekly... whatever makes you happy! Once you feel pressure, it's not fun and starts feeling like a "real job." So heck, if I have to wait a week, two weeks, a month... it's all good.
@@soupclassicmotoring As a TV producer that puts out 50+ half hours a year, it doesn't matter as long as it's good. BUT... I have 4 people working with me to do that. I'm also a former BBC Worldwide Creative Director (US and LatAm) so I think I know a little about what I'm talking about.

This answered a lot that I was wondering. Thanks to the patreons for asking good questions! :D And congrats on the big 100k George! This did not come off as self indulgent at all. Quite the contrary. And your friends and family is right: lots of us cares as much for the person as the project cars. That's a natural side effect of your own advice: being yourself! I've said it before, and you touched on it as well, that I can watch people raid parts catalogues and doing 24h bolt-on conversions everywhere... but I can't get to feel like I get to come along for the journey very many places.
Thanks got taking the time to share some of your journey and experiences. Think if one to view all of your videos, they would know some of the background facts. Congrats on the 100k mark and keep on keeping on. Cheers.
So, everytime you talk about light weight and standard fasteners I cringe, roll my eyes and then the mechanical design engineer in me takes over. Having worked on mini's and a Europa among many other metric based cars, it is very satisfying walking over to the cabinet and grabbing fresh new bolts, nuts, washer and lock washers to replace the ones you took off of whatever you are working on. I highly recommend buying in bulk, and from an industrial supply house. Not sure what they have in your country, but McMaster-Carr here in the states is a great online source. You save money and "leftovers" always come in handy! I would also recommend only getting grade 8 quality, the extra cost is minimal, and sometimes cheaper because of the greater demand. As for reasons NOT to waste time cutting down bolts: 1) Cutting a nicely plated, corrosion resistant bolt exposes unprotected metal, and requires time to chamfer the end nicely, or else you risk cross threading fasteners and starting over, or worse. 2) Let's do some math! Let's assume all your bolts are Ø3/8" and they are all 1/2" too long. Ignoring the thread root diameter and the end chamfer, that means when you cut down those bolts you "lightened" the car by 0.016 lbs ... so you will need to do this 63 times to achieve a 1 lb savings. A quick google search shows a 1980 Esprit curb weight at 2,687 bls. SO, if you can find 63, Ø3/8 bolts that are 1/2" too long, you can make a 0.037% weight savings! Wooohooo. AND I would wager most of your fasteners are 1/4-20's or 1/4-28's, so you are going to be saving even less. Talk about a poor return on investment... All that said, if you want to do this for aesthetics, fine; but I would STRONGLY recommend you simply buy the proper length fastener as opposed to cutting down existing. Most bolts have a good range of available lengths so it's unlikely, if properly specified, you would be looking at an unsightly extra length of bolt. As always, enjoyable content!!! Cheers!
Appreciate the effort and knowledge man, thanks. Can't remember what I said, but I'm guessing it is a legacy thought from when I stripped the car. Never fear, I've always replaced all fasteners possible. The W123 is a good example, and refitting in the marine world [and living by the sea] taught me about fastener suitability, and gave me a healthy distain for galv/passivated ones. I go ss wherever tensile strength isn't a factor, and new a properly specified mild steel wherever else. So the thought process with cutting down or rather specifying proper lengths, is to be happy to at worst break even on weight but have a lot of stainless in the mix in the process.
I started watching this Q&A fully expecting to switch off after 5 minutes, (Modern attention span) but I have to say it is one of the best I have seen. A very entertaining 1 hour of viewing. You may not be comfortable in front of the camera talking about yourself but other than the hand wringing I couldn't tell, or maybe that was the cold. Might be worth considering a Q&A at the end of each project specifically on that project.
I'm a Patron and I'll put $50 into a GoFundMyWorkshed campaign. Make it happen!! Imagine how much time you'd save not having to mess around with shifting stuff around a tiny space. We get you want to do it like most people would have to but to be honest, that doesn't translate to the videos., We see great care and attention to a project and only a little laugh is given to the space issue and only if you mention it. Plus this was an awesome hour but I think the first 15 minutes were the best. I live in Brisbane and remember the Best Job in the World competition and the advertisements. It's cool you have a Queensland connection.

I'm sorry to hear that the Esprit videos aren't doing as well as you'd hoped. The Esprit is my favourite car of all time, and I really want one some day. Keep plugging away at it, I'm really enjoying the Esprit series!
@@soupclassicmotoring I remember well that Best Job In The World comp. Here in West Oz we did a similar one, but you can only catch lightning in a bottle once. One day would love to introduce you to the joys of laserscanning\photogrammetry and CNC cutting & 3D printing but I suspect that would take all the fun out of your videos.
Came to the channel for the cars. Stayed for the combination of amazing production values, content and genuine passion. The stop motion and one of the most soothing voices on TH-cam make your videos for an almost zen like experience. Loved the Q&A and the insights it gave in your life and mindset. Coming from a start in a corporate career and subsequently several years traveling the world as a dive bum instead of a surf bum, really connected to some of the choices, doubts and challenges you described. And so random that you were on the Cabrinha Quest, I crossed paths with them quite a few times while sailing the South Pacific. Never expected that coincidence while looking at videos of a guy in a shed fixing rusty cars.
It's a small world on land, but you're right... it's a deadly coincidence that some old bangers were the link to two little boats crossing paths in the big ocean! Thanks for the kind words and here's to good winds and winding roads :)
Congratulations on your 100k plaque, hugely well-deserved and thanks for another hour of great entertainment. Funny thing, watching you in the back seat, it was like someone was actually interviewing you - a bit odd when there was only you.😁 It was interesting to learn a wee bit about you; never realised you were such a jet-setter.😁 Looking forward to seeing the welder getting put to work and, if going 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑙𝑦 would make things easier, we'll just need to have some patience. First 15 mins of this is amazing! Really interesting life you have been living. It comes through in your personality and of course the amazing content you are giving us! Congratulations on 100k too!
Wow dude. Epic stories, and hearing how you came up, I feel you’ll always keep moving and innovating to do something cool in whichever Avenue you choose. Jealous, but I am too lazy to be like you. I have a job that’s easy enough to not motivate me to work for myself.
100k is great! And we are here to stay, believe me. Run a funding campaign to your subscribers to raise the funds for the shop. With your filming skills, it’s going to be awesome. Go George!
Very engaging content and definitely not self indulgent. Glastron is probably a shelved project now but did you ever look into "Roll On / Roll Off" transportation from the States? Had a lot of experience with this in the late 80s. Basically the boat comes over strapped to its own trailer inside the ship which is a car transporter where the cars are driven on and driven off. Quite reasonable cost for Florida to Southampton. When it arrives simply hook it up to the Range Rover and drive it home. Congratulations on the 100 k subscribers. Seems to me if you surreptitiously add W123 somewhere in the caption the views for the recent Esprit content might be higher! But am sure they will gain traction soon.
Thanks for the mention George, we would be more than happy to give advise and guidance so you can do as much as your comfortable with on the Esprit interior. Loved the Q&A congratulations on 100K followers I'm still in disbelief that is not double or triple that the content you put out is first class.
Hi George! I'm too tall for an Esprit but do have an Alfa GTV6 that I really love. I don't have a Range Rover but do plan on getting a 1990's era Jeep Cherokee XJ with the inline 6, 2-door and 5-speed. Good luck to you!
I was in a lovely Cherokee Laredo from that era not so long ago. I was never a massive fan but it converted me with it's tweed interior and 80's/90's looks.
Whooottt so awesome that you've been in that Australian dream job! I also applied back then and now I wondered who did actually go and what they are doing now. And here I found you doing these epic videos! Keep it up! ;)

I'm sorry to hear that the Esprit videos aren't doing as well as you'd hoped. The Esprit is my favourite car of all time, and I really want one some day.
Keep plugging away at it, I'm really enjoying the Esprit series!
Def not going anywhere, and you know what they say about expectation being the root of heartache ;) It's all good
You need to get on Drive or the car pervert. Invite them over to see the Esprit. It's a wonderful series. Just isn't known enough.
You even break the rules with your Q&A! Great video & congrats on 100k
Did I? Thought I was turning into a proper tuber! ;)
Really love your videos and the work you do 👍😊🥇
I appreciate it Kjeld thank you
Congrats George for the 100k and the unique entertaining and interesting editing!
🍻OHP
Congratulations on your 100k plaque, hugely well-deserved and thanks for another hour of great entertainment. Funny thing, watching you in the back seat, it was like someone was actually interviewing you - a bit odd when there was only you.😁
It was interesting to learn a wee bit about you; never realised you were such a jet-setter.😁
Looking forward to seeing the welder getting put to work and, if going 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑙𝑦 would make things easier, we'll just need to have some patience.
Cheers for now,
Dougie.
I did have an interviewer... well loads of them ;) Welder getting cranked up this coming week. Cheers Dougie
First 15 mins of this is amazing! Really interesting life you have been living. It comes through in your personality and of course the amazing content you are giving us! Congratulations on 100k too!
🍻Aaron
Wow dude. Epic stories, and hearing how you came up, I feel you’ll always keep moving and innovating to do something cool in whichever Avenue you choose. Jealous, but I am too lazy to be like you. I have a job that’s easy enough to not motivate me to work for myself.
That concept that sounds appealing 😅 Thanks Jeb
Gen X represent! lol...Really enjoyed the Q and A , your content continues to inspire!
x in xs man, glad and thanks a mill
You are smashing it my friend! Loving your work, keep it up :)
Thanks, will do :)
Well George, even as a 'boomer', I think you're inspiring with the quality of your work. I think there's a channel in everyone, even me.
Haha stop trying to get a rise out of me, and you're right about the channel in us all :)
Thanks for the mention George, we would be more than happy to give advise and guidance so you can do as much as your comfortable with on the Esprit interior. Loved the Q&A congratulations on 100K followers I'm still in disbelief that is not double or triple that the content you put out is first class.
Wow you've done some amazing things real insight into yourself 👌💪😎your a real free spirt guy. Best way to be
Congrats on the 100K.
Whooottt so awesome that you've been in that Australian dream job! I also applied back then and now I wondered who did actually go and what they are doing now. And here I found you doing these epic videos! Keep it up! ;)
There were 16 of us in the end, from all over the world :) Thanks Danas
I completely agree with your stance on being employed by another person. Well done on the 100k 👍
Can’t wait to be back in Ireland as soon as we can travel again
Hopefully soon :)
Love catching you live, as I want you to know that your work is appreciated greatly... I wish you all the best and all the success in whatever area of undertaking you point your sight towards! I hope to meet ya one day, sooner than later, and maybe have a lovely tea lubed conversation!
I second that...
could probably do better than tea :D Thanks for the kind words
I love those Q&A. It is the opportunity to learn more about who is "behind the channel". And we got lucky, we had the mechanic, the cameramen, the editor... on screen, all in one video 😁
I know it is a tough balance between quality and quantity. I would love to see a video once a week, though...
100k subscribers - throughly deserved
🍻
Haha! Im from Queensland (re tourism adverts)...big fan and first saw your RR (blue one) work when surfing for Landrover series restoration stuff. Big fan and fellow all-rounder! Keep up the great work and fab videography...
So cool!
really enjoy the channel, would like to see a fully sponsored show ! V8 swap the Lotus :)
Sponsorship I'm always open to... V8 in the Esprit though, I'd need convincing ;)
Thanks for inspiring me to keep chipping away on my old Volvo. You are showing that making mistakes is the foundation of learning. Good luck with your projects and by the way, I wouldn't mind if the Italian lady would feature more often!
Congratulations on 100K George! Don't ever stop being yourself!
Congrats on the 100K George! Your honesty, style and self taught skill is what makes your channel stand out for me. Thank you and keep up the great work.
So glad to see you getting the subs you deserve.
Cheers Jackie
Only discovered your channel this week and want to applaud your motivation, style and passion. Looking forward to watching more of your content. Truly inspirational!
Love the bits about the seats but a smart move and looks like a cool collaboration too for the channel.
Yeah big time, and the Esprit is not the car to start cutting my upholstery teeth on ;)
All I want to say is thanks! Thanks for the amazing quality of your videos! Thanks for the ultra helpful and informative content! Thanks for the entertaining and interesting editing! Thanks for the inspiration and motivation for getting people to start their own projects! 100k subs is awesome and you deserve every success, here’s to the next milestone 🍻 cheers!
Really glad you did this, was interested in how you got to be doing what youre doing. Missed the channel while you were off there for a while
Thanks, back now and... full swing :)
Congrats on the the plaque 👍
George i hear you (as a 1966 kiddie) about not wanting to see and hear yourself on camera...but you are good value in front, very engaging 👏
So happy to see you cross the 100k mark, I've been following your channel since you were at 3k! I can only hope that my life is as interesting as yours once I'm older... at 28 years old I've still got plenty of years to experience things.
Autonomous in drive and nature. Inspirational stuff George.
Hi George. Loved the origin story. Brave lad. Well done and keep it up.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!FROM PARAGUAY, SOUTH AMERICA
Relaxing in the back of the 123 .
Chillin' like a villian ;)
Years ago the 123 300D was the choice of the self made man around Sligo, Mayo,Roscommon . Rugged !
Congrats on 100k George. 👍
Cheers Michael
I love those ZV number plates.
Just wish they'd give us the old letters from all of the counties

Love it man, the W126 is a savage machine, well may it wear. [and we know it will]
Great video. Love the cars but you seem like such an interesting person too
I appreciate that! thanks :)
Keep up the good work! Love the brutal honesty and the desire to pursue perfection in your restorations.
