  • This is the story of the Land Rover 200 and 300tdi story, from 1986 talking about the first ones and up until 1998 talking about the last ones, going in depth on all of the features and also near the end touching on how people modify these engines for black smoke and more power etc.

    When I was doing my apprenticeship on Land Rovers in the early 90s a man walked in with a knocked old series 3 and wanted a new engine to replace his worn out 2.25 petrol!
    He decided that he liked the 200tdi and asked if we could make it fit and a couple of weeks later a brand new crated tdi engine was sat in the workshop… we were the first to ever do the conversion and it was in one of the LRO mag!
    I remember the engine costing £5000 which was a shit load of money back then and that was before we fitted it…I also run a 200 and it’s a fine engine.

      Wow! That is an awesome story mate! I had no idea that Land Rover would’ve agreed to fit something like that to a Series 3. Do you know if that was the only Landy they did that for as I’ve never heard of it before?

      @@RhysLRWorkshop Land Rover engine was ordered through M J Fews of Charfield and the engine was fitted by a Land Rover independent specialist which is not operating anymore in the Bristol area!

    Not sure why people want to make loads of black smoke, just makes the public think diesels are dirty and should be banned ASAP

    300tdi best engine ever made last for ever reliable and economical last 300 ,000 miles easy. td5 engines was wonderful but used to much fuel about same as the thirsty Toyota pig ,td5 makes a wonderful noise at certain revs

      Yep, also 300tdi was also the last Land Rover engine which wasn’t taken over completely by electronics and ECUs and the 300tdi Range Rovers and Discovery’s are the last Range Rovers and Discovery’s without loads of driving aids on them aka the last proper drivers versions.

      ​@@callum4035then why thousands of them of are still going in Congo? That's in one small village, there's a guy i knew who is a local to the village he owns a 94 300tdi defender. Has over 1 million miles on its original 300tdi, heck it evem runs with no air filter and dirty diesel on it, water cooling? Using river water. It even operates as a taxi in the village along with other classic Land Rover, Series 3, early Discovery 1 200tdi and 300tdi are out there raking big mileage. They are the affectionate cockroach on wheels.

    The 300tdi is a fine engine. They will go almost forever if kept cool and looked after. Mines got 226,000 miles and gets an oil change every six months. Still runs very strong despite a few knocks and bangs from the rest of the drive line. Can't fault the motor at all.

      You need to look at a 94 Defender that rakes over 1 million miles on its original 300tdi engine. It even runs with no air filter on it, water cooling with river water, diesel tank using plastic can jug in engine compartment runs on dirty diesels

    Excellent video. While the 200 and 300tdi is an excellent engine, I think the next video should feature the best Land Rover engine ever made - the 2.25 petrol engine as fitted to a Series 2a 😀

      Right, you have the wrong fuel source, you want diesel. You also want to put this Diesel engine a proper car, like say a discovery 1. You also wanna take that 2.25, jumble it about a bit, remove the 2 and you will have a 2.5, best size 👌 and then you will have a proper car and it will appreciate in value 👍

    300tdi's had massive issues when they first came out, so much so that LR covered it up by offering a timing kit for a fraction of the cost.

      Massive is abit of an exageration reg 300tdi. Just need modded gears as the timing belts were been tightened too much

      ​@@mattluszczak8095 The reason the belts shredded themselves on the first iteration out the factory was due to the injection pump being pulled out of alignment due to a poorly designed rear bracket, it had slotted bolt holes which is why the "fix kit" as fitted by LR included a new bracket which basically every single 300tdi got.
      If you look on the bracket on any existing and running 300tdi engine, you shall note bushings were added to the bracket to keep the pump in alignment, previously the bracket was slotted which allowed the pump to move over time (not much time either!). The reduction in belt tension was just part of the overall solution.
      Now, the fact the engine would shred a timing belt in under 5000 miles and strand drivers at the side of the road with screwed engines with bent push rods and smashed rockers, I think, that is a pretty massive issue.

    there is a lot of incorrect information in this video, best recheck on multiple sources and actually ask people that know more. ps the engine bays were not modified at all for the 300tdi, it also did npt stop production in 1998 for the td5, it carried on as a production model to 2007. The 200tsi auto and 300tdi auto were the same box. The early 300tdi's had the same pump setup as the maunals but tuned slightly differently, they were stated as the same BHP as the maunals. In MY95 they changed to EDC diesel control and that gave a boost to the produced figures. All 3 of the auto configurations actually drove well. 200tdi auto was quite rare.

      Yes, my appologies I am aware that some information in this video is incorrect. I do now own a 300TDI auto with the EDC system fitted, annoyingly since this video is now posted there is nothing I can do to rectify the mistakes made in this video. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

    My mates 91 disco 200tdi has done over 300k and has been abused and it loves it. Last forever if you can weld lol. Got a vid of it drifting in the snow that I've uploaded if you're interested

      Yeah they do last forever just sadly a lot of the discos do get scrapped because of the welding, but the engines are absolutely bulletproof 👍

    2:12 - it was still a cast cylinder head, just one was cast iron the new heads were cast aluminium.

      No, they were made entirely by Land Rover.

      Rubbish.. the 200 tdi right the way through earned a great deal of respect for being very strong engines! I have one of the first 200tdi defenders (H plate) and it’s never let me down in the 20 years of ownership. It’s covered more than 300,000 miles and the on,y thing I e had go wrong is the head gasket…I’ve never had the sump off.
      The early 19j suffered and were made stronger around 1989/90

      @@RhysLRWorkshop I hope so. I’ve just done a 220 miles trip in my with my youngest boy up to strata Florida in wales which is quite a hard byway.
      My eldest son and wife followed in his county with a 19j and both vehicles did the trip just fine….well my wife was complaining that his heaters weren’t warmer enough but other than that all good!

      No; a 1989 Discovery TDI would be a 200TDI, it was only in 1994 that it got updated into the 300TDI.
