      It is why modern movies keep getting faster and faster.

    13:25 You also probably assumed she was the bad guy because:
    -Her colours were Red and Black (a colour combo associated with bad guys), while He was wearing Blue and White (Associated with good guys)
    -She was dressed in rogue-ish attire while wielding Daggers (The Criminal Look), and he was dressed in a knightly fashion, wielding a large sword (Fantasy Law Enforcement Look)
    -You literally see the fight from his side first
    -She fought in a tricky manner, using hidden weapons and magic; he fought in a very straight-forward manner, using only his one obvious, large weapon
    Not trying to invalidate your point, but they did very well to let you know who you're supposed to root for.

  • @biaslistdontknowher5858
    @biaslistdontknowher5858 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Ok... LOL... This going to be kinda long...
    First: the early videos put out by riot games are more "fighty fighty" without too much of a story (right know, riot is trying to make every video canon to the lore)
    Second: if there is a bad guy in LOL you can say is a "region" called The Void, its a mirrored universe that wants to consume and destroy everything. but there is a variety of bad guys that go doing machiavelics plans or simply go causing chaos and havock.
    Third: right now the world and lore of LOL is divided in regions. The sexy assassin lady is from noxus, a conquering driven empire. The white knight man is from demacia, a "goody" and very hypocrite kingdom. they are majority good unless you are a mage. Right now they are during a civic war between the racist government and the minority mages.
    Fourth: the sexualization of the characters. That's a problem in every games that some are working to end that, but, casual misogyny is a thing. Riot is making more practical yet sexy design for women, and they kinda realised that it's impossible to get rid of the sexy woman thing, so lately the solution that they found was give us sexy guys to compensate.
    Fifth: riot is getting better on their cinematic game, but if you ask me, they are better doing music videos.
    Sixth: you will notice that a lot of settings of the videos will not match. These are skin trailers cinematics. Riot treats them as parallel universes to the main one.
    Seventh (?): Lore. The lore of LOL is very... Complicated? There are a lot of things happening, and most of them has nothing to do with the other. Every region has its own problems and sometimes they cross. think about game of thrones or literally our world (?) In a sense. its just a very fuck up world where people are trying to live with literally gods, demons, aliens, monsters and magic.
    I think that's all.

    League of Legends has some of the best music designers in the industry, and their video quality for the cinematics keeps getting better. That whole community is insanely large and very engaged. It's much bigger in Asia than even here in the U.S. They host a huge tournament with teams from all around the world once a year. It's actually going on right now! It's the League of Legends World Championship (or "Worlds" for short). They are massive affairs most years, drawing stadium sellout size crowds. Before the games, they usually have some sort of musical intro act, and they've just been stepping up the production quality every year. Last year they went full live holograms on stage levels of crazy. You should make sure you check out some of the musical stuff they've made after the standard game trailers.
    They even made a virtual KPOP group called K/DA that has a full album coming next year.

    Garen is the typical knight in shining armor who represents his party: Demacia, a nation that stands for honor and nacionalism.

    Ususally when it comes to character design, Black and Red is the fastest way to know if they’re the bad guys, red meaning danger and black just straight up means evil. Black and red color is a very basic pallette yet it works so well. Same goes when it comes to spikey character design, if its pointy then they’re dangerous.

  • @Hosigie
    @Hosigie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    :O You watched it??? Thank you so much!!! But they're in chronological order in the video, and the old videos were kind of crappy? The game was released in 2009 and the animation wasn't on the same level it is now... And the lore was different... I would really like it if you watched recent ones too (I'm guessing you will eventually, but I hope you don't give up after the first few) T.T
    Like: "Tales of Runeterra: Bilgewater | “Double-Double Cross”" (it's funny),
    "Awaken (ft. Valerie Broussard) | Season 2019 Cinematic - League of Legends" and
    "Warriors | Season 2020 Cinematic - League of Legends (ft. 2WEI and Edda Hayes)" which both feature a couple of characters and their stories.
    Also "K/DA - POP/STARS (ft. Madison Beer, (G)I-DLE, Jaira Burns) | Music Video - League of Legends" is a legit kpop/American pop collab with a cool animated video of the characters from the game cosplaying as kpop stars.
    Also I agree with you about female armor... In the game it's important to show what kind of character each of them is... There are over 150 different champions in the game that you can play, and everyone has different abilities and is either tank, assassin, fighter, bruiser, enchanter, mage, marksman, etc., so they made their outfits show what type of champion they are (not always, but almost always). For example Leona is a tank support, really hard to kill, so she has golden armor all around her body. And Morgana (shown in the video) is a mage support with a lot of crowd control (stuns, roots, disabling enemy champions) and she's squishy, easy to kill, so she doesn't have that much armor. I do completely agree with you though, as a woman who plays games, it gets annoying seeing female warriors in games dressed in straps of clothes that don't serve a purpose, aside from showing as much of their body as possible.
    When you die in the game, you respawn in your base. So they showed that.
    It's true, there are no real bad guys. The game is of a MOBA genre, it stands for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and every game 2 teams of 5 players compete against each other, so this reflects two teams battling. In the lore which is up for interpretation, you can make judgement which side you like or don't like, although all sides have good reasons for what they're doing, even Noxus that's always waging war on other nations.
    About the girl with red hair you thought was a bad guy, she's called Katarina, she's an assassin from Noxus, she's fighting Garen, a king's guard from Demacia with a big sword who's compensating hah. They're actually lovers, but a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story, as their nations are at war. Both Noxus and Demacia have good and bad sides. Noxus is conquering neighbouring kingdoms and asserting their rule, but they've destroyed unjust kingdoms and brought democracy, it can be seen in a short cinematic called "League of Legends - Tales of Runeterra Noxus Cinematic Trailer | “After Victory”". Demacia is full of good people, but they're discriminatory against mages, they're afraid of them because people were killed by mages before, so they hunt mages and imprison them, they are kind of racist (I think it's a parallel to racism in real world) against mages, like people are racist to elves in Witcher world.
    About the little girl with a teddy bear, she's a fire mage called Annie. And there is an amazing cinematic about her origin story called "ANNIE: Origins | League of Legends", it has a beautiful art direction and it can pull on your heartstrings a bit.
    I'm really grateful that you gave League of Legends a chance, and I hope you continue to watch the cinematics, and I'll be looking forward to it!
    Also loved your shirt.

    Most people already explained most things about the cinematics. However one cool little detail is that the girl with the red hair and the guy in shiny armor are in a non-official romeo-juliet relationship.

    Why is it always about gender and the color of the skin lately? The perception of good and evil was affected by the clothing of the characters. One is dressed as an assassin while the other as a knight. In case their armor is swapped audience would have thought that a man is a villain and a woman is a hero. Simple as that.

    • @Noahelsayed
      @Noahelsayed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Because you’re watching a closeted racist/sexist who’s expressing those parts of her personality by pretending to be the exact opposite. Also she seems very insecure about her own body, regularly getting intimidated by fictional character’s looks. She fails to understand the target demographics for the advertised products, wich are mainly 10-18 year old boys and older sad men (at least back in the day when most of those games where made), are drawn to these over sexualized images of females. I started watching her with her first wow reaction because I always love to see people who aren’t involved with gaming culture discovering this whole new world of fiction. But I quickly realized the annoying focus on politics and social justice bs. So now I just check in from time to time when I want a good laugh. And Hannah if you would stop projecting race and gender into everything you’d see that way less things in live actually revolve around those topics. I’m an african who grew up in Germany and struggled a lot with my sexuality growing up with a single mom. Just added the last part because apparently you are not allowed to make reasonable arguments if you haven’t faced some form of discrimination.

    • @HannaHsOverInvested
      @HannaHsOverInvested  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Noah Elsayed There is nothing closeted about it. I believe everyone, including myself, is racist and sexist. I practice anti-racism. That is not the same thing as saying I’m not racist.
      Of course I am insecure with my body. I would like very much like to have an in-depth conversation with any woman who isn’t. Maybe she could teach me how to ignore how society has treated the female body. That said, my insecurity has nothing to do with the impracticality of clothing, or over sexualization of female characters in gaming. It’s been in my life much longer than game trailers have.

      @@Noahelsayed Here's a reasonable argument: not everyone's experiences in life are the same as yours. It's great - truly great - that you grew up in a European country and didn't have to deal with as much open discrimination as we deal with on the opposite side of the ocean. That's awesome for you. That's your experience. Just because you've had it, doesn't mean someone else hasn't had the exact opposite. Maybe if you want your opinions to be valued, try accepting and valuing those of others instead of dismissing them as seeking social justice? Also - since when has wanting social justice (ie. equal and fair treatment) become bullshit? Why do people use the term as though it's an insult? It says more about you than it does about the person you're talking about that the idea of equal treatment offends you.

      Girl is from a place called Noxus where they like to conquer neighboring lands and value strength above all else. They’re all really super edgy but apparently colonizing isn’t a capital crime.
      Guy is from a city state that’s basically supposed to be the opposite called Demacia. They’re all about order and justice and whatnot but are actually a little dictatorial in some ways. They don’t like the use of magic so anyone caught using it is immediately imprisoned.

    As to social thought experiement. Katarina is an assassin and is essentially on the side of NOXUS or the noxian empire which is known for more or less, gain what you kill. On the one hand noxians will conquer and have public executions, but on the other hand if there is for example a king with slaves, tehy will destroy that entire empire and give the slaves a chance to buiild themselves up and become something instead of having to kneel to anyone. She works closesly with Darius who is the king of noxus.
    GAREN is the big dude in the armor whos a leading general for the armies of Demacia, who, even though theyre all about peace of justice, Demacia has also gathered up people who use magic and put them in jail for it, both sides have shitty aspects and good.
    If youre looking for the truely evil characters, there are void entities, old gods, dimensional creatures, and evil scientists who all enjoy killing and murder and torture etc.
    However most of the arguably evil entities are some sort of physical monstrosity. Katarina is hot but even knowing the lore i dont find myself rooting for either one more or less. I was very against the noxian empire until i found out they free slaves which is something demacia has failed to do even to their own people. Not to mention garen being a demcaian general, when his own sister is a mage. something she could have been imprisoned for.

    I think the way we percieve the good o bad guys/gals in games and movies has more to do with (of course how we are raised but also) color psychology, red is often percieved as danger or warning, and the bad is most commonly pictured with dark colors, meanwhile the light colors are often related to good things so, Katarina having red hair and wearing dark clothes give us that sensation of danger, while Garen having brown hair and wearing white, silver and blue colors gives us a sensation of security and goodness.

  • @s.p.d.c4168

    You're still in the chaotic part of LoL cinematics. At this point in time, there wasn't yet a well established lore, so there is no sense to make out of this situations. As you guessed, this is romanticized gameplay. And to avoid boring you with a full lore dump: there are bad guys, and alot of okay/not so bad guys. Many factions exist, there is no two side war like in Warcraft, and you will only see glimpses of it even in the later, more structured cinematics. Most of the info are found in short written stories anyway.
    On the social experiment bit, your position is interesting. I hadn't thought of taking into account the "sexy women are bad/ white men are good" aspect, probably because I'm a white dude. True, society scorn a woman who doesn't cover up "properly", but in this case, the character design itself play an important part.
    Katarina is dressed in spiky gear, use vicious looking daggers, and is color coded in red and jet black. Both color have negatives conotations in western culture. The sexy part do come into play tho, since her wild and almost playful way of moving set her as someone who is not taking the situation seriously. She is an aggressive and disrespectful individual, or rather, is presented as such.
    On the other hand, Garen is focused and serious, wich are attitude traits seen as "good". He is color coded in gold, white and blue, all "regal" colors associated with more peaceful or laudable themes or traits. He's burly yet groomed, violent yet serious. He is, by all means, presented to us like Superman would be. A strong, focused white man with a mission for justice. Wich is pretty close to the truth, he's a simple character.
    But since you get 15 seconds of video to learn to know this characters, everything must be clear from the get go. Garen good, Garen fighting Katarina, so Katarina bad.
    Will think on my personal biases tho.

    ok, there are a couple of things to clarify. World of League of Legends is divided into diffrent regions. The world itself is called Runeterra and it consists of Demacia - kingdom with honorable values, and it was fighting Noxus, a kingdom that values strenght and power above all else. There is also Ionia, you could compare it to asian countries and culture (it was also fighting Noxus). There are shadow isles inhabited by undead. Freljord that is run by clans and is located in frosty mountains. Piltover and Zaun, two city-states focused on science and technology. In order to stop wars and bloodshed powerful mages created an arena where you can summon champions to fight in a controlled enviroment, where nobody can die, and instead be respawned in a certain period of time (not aliens ;) ). Each character has his/hers/its own bio so it would take a lot of writing.
    The other thing is that every ability that's shown in those cinematics is in the game (more or less at least)

  • @SinApex
    @SinApex ปีที่แล้ว

    This game has gotten a lot better about their designs with female characters, and that's something I'm really glad about. There are still some character designs and art that are pointlessly sexualized, but overall it's way better than before where every female character had this tiny waist and giant boobs and a horribly skimpy or impractical outfit. It's a really nice improvement to see in a medium that still has a long-standing issue with female characters.

  • @ahhaboom
    @ahhaboom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think most of the other commenters have covered a lot of what I'd say, but yeah. These are very early promotional cinematics, long before the idea of putting a story in your 'ads' was the norm in video games. Long, self contained stories in cinematics like this is honestly fairly new, excluding Blizzard who had the vision of pre rendered cinematics being a 'reward' for players and a way to show off important story information in an easily digestible way.
    The commentary about Katarina being seen as a bad guy is interesting. Back when this cinematic was released, there was a valid argument of 'Noxus = bad, Damacia = good'. The 'evil' characters had hooks and dark colours, while the 'good' characters were more heavenly in their colour and armour designs. However this lore doesn't translate to the actual gameplay at all, as the ten players build their team based on mechanics which have absolutely nothing to do with the writing behind the characters. The lore exists entirely outside of the game, and acts as one of seven psychological 'hooks' that gets players invested in games like this (character design is the first hook IE finding a character you can relate to through either their looks, their ethnicity, their voice etc).
    There's multiple books and studies done on the psychology around this. 'Getting Gamers' by Jamie Madigan is a good read if this sort of thing interests you at all.
    This is a round about way of saying that Katarina's design is entirely meant to paint her as an antagonist, just like Garen's design is meant to make him look like a protagonist. It goes far deeper than just gender, everything about them is meant to paint them in a particular light as they were poster children for the brand - you had to quickly and easily communicate to someone with 0 context who they were for marketing. At least until a few years ago when Riot overhauled a lot of their older designs to turn everything into shades of grey as well as dial down the sex appeal, or at least make it more tasteful.

    At 13:48 when you were asking and explaining why you thought the woman was the "bad guy" you made some very good points. I just want to add that there have been multiple psychological studies revolving around the colors RED and BLUE, especially in sports. Turns out that subconsciously humans tend to associate the color RED with danger, violence, bad, blood when seen in nature. Her having RED hair and BLACK clothing is meant to give you the sense that she is a "bad guy" or dangerous. Respectively BLUE has been subconsciously associated with intelligence, calm, cool. I mention this because turns out these studies have also reported that in both sports and video games, teams that have the color RED in their uniforms have more wins overall than teams that have BLUE as their team colors in sports/video games that involve violence, fighting, aggressive competition. In sports/video games that require more strategy, thinking, waiting the opposite has be seen. Petitions in the past have come out to ban these two colors as team colors in order to remove the advantage they tend to give but I have never heard of one succeeding.

    League of Legends is a kind of tournament. Sort of like Mortal Kombat. Where heroes of all nations of the world of Runeterra compete for their kingdom in combat. Some of the monsters you see in these trailers were captured by the mages of the league to add to the games. Runeterra is a world with very rich history and many varied nations from a pirate kingdom to mountain peak living, snow loving trolls and viking-esk people and everything in between.
    Much like Overwatch the game itself is simply fighting with very little story in it, while the actual Lore is released in short videos, short stories and comic books. For instance the red haired girl and the bulky knight are actually secretly in love but their nations are at war. Also you asked if the warewolf was "abducted by aliens" - He was recalled because he was salin. In the tournament nobody actually dies, when they are critically wounded they are teleported away from the battlefield for a brief time and healed before they can participate again.
    I highly recommend you keep going as you seem to enjoy it already. The later videos are a lot more story driven and become on par with Overwatch. Also the short kind of weird ones are kind of advertisements for different outfits you can buy for your champions. They are kind of part of the lore and at the same time not, as it seems there is a multiverse kind of like DC and Marvel have multiverses. You'll see actual music videos later as some characters are actual pop stars in an alternate universe.

    Actually very good point about how you can think Katarina is part of the "bad guys" because of her outfit. I associate it with the color of her hair (you know, red=flames=evil), but actually can be a new point of view that it's because she's a sexy strong woman. In fact, she is part of the Noxus empire, that is not totally bad (because there are no good o bad factions in League of Legends, they just have different objectives), but it is certainly an expansionist brutal empire that conquers and destroys everything. So maybe her character design is made for us to think she is bad.
    But I agree on the oversexualized champs that we have in League of Legends. The metal bra lady is called Morgana and she actually had a rework and they redesign her character. Now she wears a dress, which may not be more comfortable for the battle, but she is a mage, so she doesn't need to move around like Katarina.
    Very nice content and very nice opinions (agree, everything is politics), new suscriber

    You think she's the bad guy because she has red-black colors and is attacking, and he has white-blue-shiny colors and is defending.

    Color scheme. At the time they made her all of noxus (where she from) was “bad guys” so a lot of it is in design. Plus given that she’s standing against Garen, who they designed as the paragon of justice, doesn’t help.

    "I'm probably wrong because I'm always wrong, that similar to Warcraft, there are no 'real' bad guys?"
    I need to watch these Warcraft videos now because there's more bad guys in WoW than there are in League lmao, Evelynn and Gangplank aren't fantastic but they're mostly just hanging out.

      @@HannaHsOverInvested There's several origin stories that are good. There are some story based ones like the one with the Knight guy vs the Assassin. Those get better as they move one. But there best is the music videos. Awaken, Rise and Warriors would probably be top 3 for league vids. I think you'll enjoy the ride.

    Lol the fact that she associated katarina was a "bad guy," was because she was a girl in provocative clothing against a white male, was beyond my imagination. I actually never thought about it that way. The first time I saw this, I identified katarina as the bad guy because of traits that I read from her such as: dark color scheme, red hair, scar on her face, dressed like an assassin, over confident, cocky, and more. Where as Garen had the good guy type of traits like: seriousness, bright color schemes, knight in shining armor, and the feeling like he is fighting katarina for a great cause. Tryndamere in this cinematic had dark color schemes and intimidating look over all, and so I thought he was a bad guy too. I never thought someone could be bad or good because of what they wear or what gender they are born with, not the skin of that character.

    Early league cinematics were sort of ass. In this entire 2 hour compilation, there are maybe only 3 or 4 good ones. I'd recommend watching "Tales of Runeterra" cinematics instead, which aren't included in the compilation you're watching. They're far better, both in artstyle and writing, and feature the same characters.
    If you want to continue with the current compilation video, I'd highly recommend having someone you trust pick out a list of individual videos/timestamps.

    Well clearly, Garen is quite literally a "knight in shining armor" and Katarina is the viscious assassin who LAUGHS during combat. Nothing sexist nor racist about that imo.
