  • I find something very different in our Aussie Parallax Agates, while polishing a AAA Grade Montana Iris Agate from Theo Kellison with a tile saw and sander polisher.
This is part 2 of a 2 part series Chasing Rainbows, to see how we hunted these rocks check out Chasing Rainbows Part 1.

    Hey Mate,
Wifey and I watched this video with interest, as we were wondering what the basis of Theo's work with this phenomenon might be. I have two things to suggest regarding this project. #1- I think the effect could be a "chatoyance", as there are bands of colorful light. #2- Your polishing methods have just got to improve! You need to buy a HI-Tech flat lapping machine or similar. #3- Dop thin slices for polishing on the flat lap or other. Using a drill-mounted pad such as you are doing is too rough for delicate thin materials. Hence the breakage. #4- The beautiful affects observed from the stones you found in the bush is the kind of thing seen with most any precious opal. When you put your fingers behind the slab without any change in the colorful glow, it was an epiphany for sure! But, as a cutter of faceted stones, this is similar to what happens when cutting the pavilion, or bottom half of a faceted stone. Facets are created by design, and form. These facets (plates) are responsible for reflecting the light rays borne into the top (crown) of the cut stone. Then those rays are sent back out through the crown, giving it the brilliance and sparkle we've all come to know and love. But in your little slabs, the light was reacting not only to surface penetration, but with the bending of light within the stone's matrix. I've cut Ethiopian Opal which has an exact same performance of rays and colors. I could send you a short video if you cared to see it. Mind you, my gems are faceted, with light beams breaking and following many other paths to the next break point; not fluid like yours were. Beautiful! What a grand discovery!

Paddiman! Thank you mate for your super helpful comment and sharing your gem info! That really helps a lot! Also I think you’re spot on. It may be time to join the rest of them on the Hi-Tech Diamond method. I’ll start looking into it for sure. I’d love to get a cabbing machine but that’s probably for another day. Thank you again mate I really appreciate the help 👍 much love from down under, to you and your wife. 👍👍👍

Ok, we had this discussion before, irish agate comes from Ireland, ice agate comes from iceland and wal agate comes from walmart.
A few less tinnies will improve your eyesight the following morning and over thinking is a good thing providing you know you are doing it, then you can reverse your thinking and come up with the easiest solution.
The hole cutting was and is a good idea, you just didn't go that bit further, you don't need a spacer underneath, if you grind them all at the same time with the thickest in the middle they will all end up the same, Don't worry about the plywood, that is softer and will vanish.
I did a similar thing with clear quartz that had rainbow colours locked inside, I gathered several over some time with the intention of putting them all together as one flat piece. Great idea, er well.
I worked out the sizes so I could cut them all the same thickness without letting the rainbows escape, I managed that quite well.
Somewhere between being cut and lapping the joining faces, one rainbow started playing up behind my back.
So I laid them out, numbered ready for assembly and then face polishing both sides, checking each one constantly for scratching I finally started on the Cerium oxide high gloss finish.
Sometime later with some warm soapy water and a toothbrush the job was complete, one amazing window hanging spectacle of rainbow glory shining all around the room when spun with the sunlight shining through it, a dream from the sixties, mind blowing, colour tripping, head spinning display of nature and it's hidden beauty.
Nope, what I had created was a set of rainbows that could visit eachother because one rainbow turned the others over so the reflection of light causing the rainbow went from left to right not back to front.
The moral of the story is, there is a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but not only the little people will stop you finding it, the rainbows are in it with them.
    Nice video jesse.
    Stay safe my brother.

Halo is the first thing that popped into my mind with your agates. I've seen the rainbow agates before and they are beautiful. The gold light of your agates make me feel happy like I do when the crystals I have hanging in my living room windows and on some of my plants get hit just right by the afternoon sunlight. My whole living room gets lit up with little dancing rainbow lights that make a mad dash for the walls and ceiling. Sometimes they even manage to get out into the hallway. Seeing all those happy little lights dancing around the room makes me smile every time.

Hey Jes do you have an Amazon wish list? I'd like to find a way to help you get some smaller polishing tools. You know like ones that will hook up with a grinder. Just a smaller version of what you have. Great job brother! Love it!
