    Fantastic video, even having previews, it was still surprisingly beautiful and informative. Can't choose a favorite, they're all so amazing. I love that each has it's own distinct character, like that spotted one with the color patches. Thanks for bringing the Ozone, Lily and Ochoco along, it was a total blast and we're definitely new, lifelong members of the crew chasing rainbows. It's so cool that Rookie and Kurt are also chasing! Can't wait to see their videos! Also thanks for all the guidance; couldn't have discovered what we did without you, your cunning eye, and depth of knowledge! Great video, and until we spectrum out again, cheers!

    Such a great video! Humor, friends, dogs, agates and so much beauty, just awesome. How thin do you usually cut the slabs and do they need to be tumbled in a vibratory or if you cushion enough, with ceramics and pellets, would slabs work in a rotary tumbler? Just curious. You and Karen create such beauty in your rock art of all kinds, very amazing. Thank you for sharing Theo!✌🤠

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you so much! It really means a lot!😄 so there is a bit of a range when it comes to iris; really good iris can show fairly thick but others dont really shine until they are a good bit thinner, so the rule of thumb is 2-5 mm👍 a REALLY bold iris will show at 5 but generally speaking they almost always need to be brought down quite a bit thinner. Some of my best are ones ive ground down to 1.2 to 1.6 mm. I dont have a very reliable saw, it really likes to make agates blow up😂, so i usually cut thick and then grind them thinner before tumbling. And I do all of my tumbling in a rotary but a vibratory would actually be better for this purpose! I just dont own one🤣 its on the list!

    • @slothhunter4615
      @slothhunter4615 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harbor freight has a 18lbs vibratory tumbler that works really well starting with stage 2-4. You will also want to use the ceramic media with it as well at a fraction of the price.

      @@TheoKellison that's true, I never had any of those agates to know it's in them, but I have seen it in Petrified wood that has been agatized. It has beautiful colors, but now I that I have seen your videos about how beautiful it is, I'm going to go back and look again, and maybe slice them thin to see if I have what you have, and I love fossils and that's what most of my cabs are made from.

    Awesome video as always and beautiful Montana Agates. An awesome suggestion from Michigan Rocks that helped us with our slabbing when our clamp would not hold our rock. Rob suggested to use Elmer's wood glue and glue a piece of 2x4 to the flat part of the rock after you make a flat cut. It allows your vice to hold the rock while you make those beautiful slabs.

    • @TheoKellison

    Super AWESOME! You crack me up, every time. Your kicking the box 😂😂😂. Iris agates are Amazeballs. Many years ago, I purchased an Indonesian agate because I thought it was beautiful. I didn’t know Iris agates were a thing at the time. After cutting it, I realized it had rainbow bands and I pretty much had my mind blown 🤯. I still have all the pieces I cut and polished. They are like little guitar picks. Lol. You’ve inspired me to go through my Montana Agates to look for more Iris.

    Very nice Theo. We find Iris agates down here in SoCal but I must admit yours are bigger. Down here the give away is the faint spiderweb banding with a quartz’s center. Getting the right thickness is tricky and if you drop them they shatter. Hey you never know what your going to get until you cut them. Duds are part of it. Keep rocking

    Another great video Theo... they came out stunning!!! The 3 you said were your top faves starting at the 16:49 mark almost kinda look like opal also. They totally reminded of opal!!
    Will you be puttin these in your East store??

    Wow wow wow those lines. They remind me of the lines on a record. And thank you for explaining what to look for with agates to possibly get iris. It is so amazing with the iris and the moss inside. Thank you Theo for the video and all the colours. I do have a question. Im trying to get into stone carving and was grinding with diamond tips on what appeared to be sand stone but it ate up the diamond tip and yes i was keeping the piece wet. What kinds of stone would you suggest to carve so that i dont destroy tons of bits.
    Thank you

      Gotta love those iris! Those bold colors really never get old! And i have run into that same issue with sandstone in the past; you would think because it is such soft stone that it would be very good for carving but i think the gritty make up actually abrades your diamond burs faster. Unfortunately most stone will wear down burs fairly quickly but some definitely do faster than others. My go-to stone for carving is soapstone, extremely soft and takes a very good polish!

    Wild! One thing I struggle with is placing or reading where to cut for the best result. I live in Custer, SD and frequently have several buckets of Tepee Canyon nodules at the ready. Can you provide some pointers or a video of slicing Tepee’s, I know one of your videos you collected a bunch not long ago.

      Great idea for a video!😄 usually the stone will tell you where it wants the cuts to be but those teepee canyons are definitely a different story, most fortification agates are a bit weird or counterintuitive as far as placements. I will definitely make a video on that!😄

      @@TheoKellison I get that it is a lot of trial and error, however on the last batch I sliced there was a lot of hollering and swearing as I should’ve sliced in a different direction. Especially when you’re gambling on a solid chert nodule hoping it opens up the way you want it. Keep up the content it’s very informative and my son and I enjoy watching the adventures.

    You should piece them together like stained glass and make small table lamps, or plug in night lights.

    Hilarious and beautiful video. I wonder how you tumble slabs? Using what grit and for how long? I would think they would break!

    Definitely check out Rookie Rockhound, he's one of my favorite if not favorite #finders. Theo you are absolutely amazing. A true leader with the amount of knowledge and gems you share with the rest of the creators and finders on the tube. Thank you brother for setting a great example to all. 👍

    Hi Theo! Your videos are awesome! Thanks for sharing. Do you only tumble your slabs for 24 hours? I have picked up agate on the Yellowstone for a long time and only now started cutting them. It is so much fun!

    This is caused by thin film interference of the closely banded layers in the chalcedony. There's a relationship between how close together the layers are and how thin the piece must be sliced for the effect to be visible.
