  • This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran, Jose Guevara. Jose spent the first half of his enlistment attached to the Marine Security Force Battalion out of Bangor, WA. He spent countless hours training and becoming proficient with close-quarters battle and recaptured tactics for urban warfare.
Jose then got attached to 3rd Battalion 7th Marines out of 29 Palms, CA with whom he would conduct a combat deployment to Iraq. Jose gives great insight on performing at a high level in the Marines and transitioning back into the civilian culture.
We're thankful for Jose sitting down with Urban Valor's Josh Gutierrez to share his story! This was a great interview with a fantastic storyteller and BADASS Marine!
We appreciate his time and courage to share his story!

Loss of identity hit hard and for many of us that first day waking up as a civilian is a very lonely day. Keep moving forward brother and feel free to reach out to us anytime if there's anything we can help you with.

It takes time, but you don’t have to settle for something, if it doesn’t fit. Just don’t pressure yourself to find it, so fast. There’s nothing wrong with you for feeling this way. Go for what you want in life, no matter what people say, or do. Be true to yourself. Give it time, be patient with yourself, and believe - you can have an active, adventurous life, if your mind is open. Follow your bliss.

José narrated quite a lot. He hit on one or two key points that caught my attention. He mentioned about being under pressure and not being able to decompress.
The Marines do not do a good job at relating to what the Marines go through. Some are less affected; others are more affected. Each Marine should be checked on by people who specialize in mental health, not some service member who lacks real skills. More could be done to alleviate service members who are not adjusting well. Jose said that there is a VA agency that provides services. That is a good start. Although it may not be able to treat or work with more severe cases; it is a beginning.
When I got out after my time in, I was working in "turning it off." I did go into the Army reserves which in some respects helped. I met former Marines in the Army reserves. But no one was overly gung ho. This was another relief.
Today, being out for over 30 years, I have vague memories of my time in the Marines. Some stick more, the ones that can piss me off. But I have my albums when I want to remember Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Philippines. But I am very much turned off. We have to look at and create new realities. I completed my university degree in Political Science, International Relations and Sociology. I mentored Chicago youths on probation for several years. I have a USMC plate cover I bought at Pendleton almost two years ago that I have not put on.
We need to learn to move forward. The Marines want to "indoctrinate" so we can all be Supermen and superwomen (remember there are women Marines), but let's just be human beings, someone's father, brother, uncle, friend, neighbor.

A big problem for me in life is monotony. The same bs go to work and come home everyday. I want to escape it. I want excitement. I want to go back in a way.

    • @UrbanValorTV
      @UrbanValorTV  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Through all these interviews I've done this past year I've found you're definitely not alone. The excitement in the military of always being on the move is hard to match in the civilian world.

Find other ways, to fulfill this - don’t settle, you can find this in life, in many different ways, give it some time…you don’t have to work a regular job, keep searching for the right thing. You will find it. You like adventure - go with your gut, trust it. Chart your own path..

crazy how in bangor most of the training that he mentioned hasnt been done at all lately, most bangor ncos leave to the fleet clueless about their main job

Something has to change with security forces man. I don't think they should get rid of it or even stop having Marines go straight there from SOI, but change it up a bit to reduce the friction those guys experience hitting the fleet. It's a known problem. Maybe all SF Marines could go to AUC instead of just FAST, or Marines that are about to hit the fleet could get a guaranteed spot on the next aitb course relevant to the billet that their rank is typically aligned with. Just something to help everyone be better.

Liked it so I will just offer that proof of a 118 being a high blood pressure in Montana on 120mgs of federally regulated medication.. so that's why the Space radio showed up for his medical health care and then the 2nd..
so let me guess my blood pressure is too low for the surgeon generals comfort again?
Because...say: Mentally you feel like a space cadet just put there cleaning like a non attentive mess of a Mr. Clean human as well??

Hard output which is alright sometimes bc I generally drink a lot of water, but with nerve damage from previous abdominal tare and back injury, and then only placebo tablets...
That's why my out is too uncomfortable, and at risk of hemorrhoids.. THAT'S BULL SHIT any CAMEL JOCKEY SURGICAL DRIP DIRECTIVEs.
