- This week’s Urban Valor episode brings us Army Ranger veteran Paul Nguyen. Paul showed up to the Army recruiter’s office one day demanding to be placed in a position to see combat. Paul found himself in combat soon enough when deployed to war. After being shot by a 7.62 caliber round he was given just a 2% chance to survive. Paul miraculously recovered, showing his true will and ability to fight! Paul received the Purple Heart for his heroic service and speaks in this interview to managing PTSD after transitioning out of the military.

This guy has a very positive attitude for what he went through, good on him, I think his parents being immigrants helped his mindset post military. It’s a sad shame more veterans aren’t able or know how to be as strong minded as him.
Went to jump school in 86’, while there the RIP cadre offered me a spot in RIP then to battalion if I made it through and it’s my biggest sadness in life that I didn’t do it BUT after my enlistment met the girl of my dreams, had a great career, kids and retired now. Definitely sad for the dude not at his objective, sometimes life is harder than we think. Keep positive brother and keep fighting.

Your story brings me back to listening to my great uncle and my grandfather recalling their experiences in Europe during the Second World War. Thanks for your service and sacrifice. That’s far more than I could ever ask of you. I’m very fortunate to have served when we were not at war or deployed anywhere. I hope for nothing more than that you make as full a recovery as possible. I’m very grateful that there are still some people like you who are compelled to sacrifice and duty. Thank you very much.👍🏾

He certainty has proven how wrong any and all people who ever implied or dared to call him “stupid”, were about him. He’s whip smart. He’s a damn hero. “Oops” Mom.
I went through SF training at 121 lbs so I can relate to watching bigger men quit and get on the truck, like you I had a big ego. Hang in there, best of wishes.

I feel you Paul about the immigrant parent thing. Folks, if you have friends who are first generation, be nice to them, most of us grew up with parenting styles from last century.lol. Jokes aside. I hope Paul's parents are proud of his accomplishments and service to our country!

When you sign up 11B (infantrymen). Basic and AIT(advanced training) is all in one in a 12 week training. Or it was when I went through Ft Benning Georgia

. The interviewer seems confused on RIP(RASP now)/Ranger Regiment/Ranger school. Ranger school doesn't make Rangers...It's a requirement later on for career progression in the Ranger Regiment...RIP/RASP is the selection that makes Rangers and is an actual special operations selection course...akin to BUDs or SFAS.

Funny story;
We got a Vietnamese guy in our Platoon. Our Platton Sergeant (Viet Nam Vet) scooped him up as a Loader. Having a 4 man full up crew was a luxury. When in the middle of the night he shows up on my Tank, at like 0200 hrs.
I asked my Platoon Sergeant WTF the next day and thanked him, come to find out he couldn't sleep with a Vietnamese Guy on his Tank.

I am a pogue Marine 3’rd gen. I am now a commercial fisherman deadliest catch shit. Seen sf guys tap out on crab decks.
I'd like to learn more about that physical therapy for drop foot. I was injured in the Marine Corps and was told it's there for good.
i remember watching a ground guide get run over by his own driver in a mrap and i always wondered wat happened to that guy. hearing that guys pelvis crack and get crushed i will never forget that

This interviewer needs more practice at interviewing, he’s all over the place going back and forth. Start with upbringing, parents, childhood, school, who inspired them the most to make the decision they made, time overseas, life after military, etc… He didn’t even ask him about his relationship with his mother now after all that he’s been through, and basically doing all that and going through that because of his mother. Well I hope that he made her proud and if not then she is just not one to be proud of anything then. Sir I do wanna say I appreciate your service to our country and I’ll speak for many people when I say this…….We are very proud of you and always hold your head up high because you are are HERO in our eyes.. Thank you again for your service and dedication to our country that gives us the Freedom we have today because of people like you.. Take Care and Keep on Keep’n on
Thanks for the feedback Brooks, like I’m sure you appreciate, we’re new at this, and Josh a combat veteran himself. These rooms and conversations get intense and we do our best to guide the conversation slightly, but our model is to allow the person who takes the seat to tell the story how they wish to tell it. Josh may ask a few things, here and there, but it’s important to balance before respecting the privacy and depth of conversation the veteran wishes to have, while also trying to close loops for the viewer within stories.
Also, sometimes our mind may be on many different things. The camera battery, the audio, the length of footage, card storage, lighting, the next question, etc all at the same time.
We also don’t want to have forced structure, as sometimes areas of life the veterans wishes to avoid, and we want to keep a blank slate beside some basic info at the beginning.
We appreciate the criticism but we do ask to give some grace towards Josh and our team as we work to improve and protect our system.
