  • This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran Kyle Hiner. On his 22nd birthday, Kyle was in a vehicle that crashed into a tree and sent him through the windshield. That incident made him realize he needed to make changes in his life. He enlisted into the Marine Corps shortly after on an open contract hoping to land an amphibious assault job. During Bootcamp, Kyle learned he was going to be a Legal Admin. He accepted it with pride and was happy to be a Marine. Kyle then found himself embedded into the special operations community and displayed the utmost respect for the MARSOC Marines which he learned many incredible lessons from being part of one of the Marine Corps' most elite units.
Kyle gives a classy and humble interview that really showcases his pride, intelligence, and self-awareness both when he went into the Marines to this date.
We really appreciate Kyle sharing his Urban Valor story, and we look forward to your feedback!

Badass, in my day I was 0121, I Lat move and got to 3/5, got re-booted until we got back from Afghan 😂. Small Corps because I was basically stationed at San Mateo for my POG years and grunt years, I was able to stay in contact with my old buddies so I had that connect. My buddies that were snipers said my name and got hooked up. That was the best feeling.

You can tell how humble he is, and I'm so glad you were able to pull a lot of GREAT info and stories from Kyle who has so much to be proud of, but you can tell he doesn't share often! I'm glad you highlighted that at the beginning!
Great interview and such a well-educated, respectful guy! Great interview!

Hell yeah! I grew up essentially just down the road from this Marine. Our schools played each other in sports. Eagles vs Blue Jays was always a big rivalry! I was part of 1/24 Charlie Co. Lansing Michigan. 2001-2009

Man that's cool he got all the reenlistment offers. I was a supply guy and in order for me to reenlist I wanted some kind of combat arms lateral move...being in an Infantry unit and deploying twice, being voluntold to man a detention facility in Iraq for a couple months and getting a NAM over that on my first deployment...made me regret my job choices, I did not like supply, but I was good at it I mean I was very close to picking up SGT by the time I got out, but I wanted over to the combat arms side. I asked for 03 lateral move first.. denied, Recon Indoc... denied, I even asked for MARSOC selection as that was brand new thing at the time and was told in order to do that I'd have to reenlist, and without a lateral move to the Infantry side I wasn't gonna reenlist. Wouldn't allow it, was told the USMC needed supply people and since I was an NCO and had 2 deployments etc they weren't gonna give me up to combat arms side.. literally what I was told, so I got out. Joined the National Guard as 11B, for a 2 years and got some experiences on that side that I was looking for, had a great time...but unfortunately my civ div life wasn't going well while I was there, some rough stuff happened to where I had to move across the country...and couldn't show up to drill so...yeah, that's how my military career ended.. luckily the 4 years active covered my ass so I was able to keep all the VA benefits, but things kindof got worse before they got better after that, I'm to a point now where things are good but it's been a real struggle. My supply friend who stayed in went to MARSOC as supply for a couple years before he got out. He had similar experience as this guy did, wouldn't be surprised if they knew each other as I think he was there at the same time. Semper Fi.

I went to the school house in CNAT on new river, class got delayed and I got voluntold to work in the S-1 office at the school house as a temporary admin clerk until my actual MOS school started. Hines was my direct supervisor in that position and throughout the rest of my career I always remembered him as one of the best CPL I ever got to work under. No clue if you’ll read this Kyle, but thanks man. Went on afterwards to my actual MOS but never felt as accepted or appreciated in my real MOS as I did working under you.

Kyle’s attitude is infectious. It’s great that he knew that he didn’t want to break down doors. He’d make a great RN or some other job in the hospital setting.
I’m sure he would’ve inspired many Marines if he decided to stay and be a Drill Instructor.
However, it’s crucial to our wellbeing to know when to call it quits and move on.
Glad he found a way to stay connected to the Marines during “retirement”.

Crazy cause January 21st 2016 I was going around a bend I took everyday for probably 10 years at that point. Hit a patch of black ice and fishtailed, regained control, hit another patch, slid, tired grabbed dry road and my car rolled a total of 9 times with me inside with no seatbelt. Roof was crunched in, frame around the window was snapped and punched through my driver seat where id be if I wore my seatbelt. Woke up hanging out of my passenger window with poptarts I had stashed for during work were everywhere. The guy who woke me up graduated a year ahead of me in high school which felt nice knowing the person who was helping me until ems got there. But again, not even a quarter mile from my house. It’s always close to home and that scares me a lot. I’ll never forget seeing my dad running down the road of cars backed up from my accident. He came because he heard something skidding or crunching and was going to help whoever it was, but it ended up being his son. Fuck man im lucky to be alive.
