beautiful!!! also thankyou for showing a REAL resin wood project! and how it almost always goes! lol! im so happy you were able to fix the goofys! lol. ive been ploaying with the idea of incorperating moving water under resin in some of my wood projects and that goof with only the harder? being added brought back the memory of my idea lol thankyou for that too! lol i have ancient joshua tree wood! hard as a rock its so old! but adding a waterfall with a river of water under resin i think will pretty awesome!
Nice save, Ken. It's always satisfying when you don't let the task beat you. That board came out looking good! I'm going to remember that tape trick for applying the resin finish ... thanks.
WOW you must be spying in my shop, I just had the same issue with my Metering pump only on the hardener side, just told Kristy about it this week too, great looking board Ken ! thumbs us as always
Good evening, Ken. You are spot on regarding this wood. Wow! An amazing job rescuing the hardener only blip. The wood, the color of resin, deep rich looking project. Excellent!
I really like this one! Sometimes it's the mistakes that make the most beautiful work. What would have happened if you just quit? Thank goodness that's not your style! I love the way it looks like water flowing 20:16
Turned out awesome. I really love how you showed all the mistakes. Simply a page out of my book, hell a novel really 😂. You’re so fortunate to have that wood! The wood simply makes the project. I now live at the beach in SC and trying to get wood like that is close to impossible. And even if you do it costs a fortune. I recently purchased some 3/4 thick walnut from Rockler. Even on sale it blew my socks off. Don’t know what’s up with that being so expensive right now. I’m sure glad I didn’t need all that much for the project. Beautiful piece and a hell of a good save. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks. I'm up in Gaffney SC. I got this Cherry burl from a property here that was logged. They don't try and save burls so I go in after and find them. Got 3 from this property.
@ wow I didn’t realize you were in SC. I’m originally from eastern PA. I once had a full blown furniture and cabinet company for several years. Then an opportunity came along to get back into metal work. I completed my tool and die apprenticeship in 1972. The business grew and grew. I had 15 CNC machines before I retired and sold the business to my sons. After moving here( Murrells Inlet) my wife and I opened a motorcycle business. I’m somewhat of a name in the industry. Created many performance parts, some with patents. After 5 years it was time to retire for good. I now have a metal and wood shop in my 3 car garage. Just a hobby shop. Nothing serious. Just started doing resin work. I love it and it appears to be more lucrative than some other things. Sorry I guess you really didn’t need to read a novel 😂.anyway I’d love to buy a few pieces of burl wood from you if you’d be so inclined to sell. If not, it’s not a problem. Again really enjoyed the video. 👍🏼👍🏼
Whoa! The straight on glamor shot reminds me of a satellite picture of somewhere on the globe! Even on a monitor screen it looks 3D. ("Beer can rings." Cracked me up!)
Ken, Perseverance pays off, it turned out nice. It would have been interesting with the hardener level left a clear void with an empty layer, if the top layer got hard.Thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video
"Since the incident"...dang. I still feel bad for you about that. But you are definitely doing pretty good since then. It's great to see you coping and still producing amazing things!
Really nice result, if not a smooth road getting there. Just a thought about mis-calculated resin volumes: since the wood was already coated in resin, you could have used water to get the precise volume, no tape measure or calculator required.
First: 10/10 for tenacity. I must admit, had that happened to me with the hardener, I would have given up at that point and reluctantly started again Second: I wonder if you've stumbled upon a really interesting technique here to cast resin with pockets that could subsequently be filled with something else. I'm thinking lava lamp? Third: It's acetone surely? Or is that just a british thing?! Great video
it's funny, I was thinking you seemed so calm about the hardener mishap but then said you pounded on the wood to relieve your frustration. That make more sense for you!
@@MoonpieCreations I never think you are over the top about it. It makes you who you are. I think rolling with it is better for our blood pressure! take care
Beautiful board Ken. I have a large cherry burl that I have been saving for a special project and this is what I have been waiting for. What size and brand is the mold that you used in the video.
I got it from Jeff Mack Designs online. jeffmacksupply.com/en-us/collections/shop-all-resin-epoxy-molds/products/rectangle-no-seal-resin-molds-epoxy-resin-forms?variant=42066276581573
Wow…that was a lot of hard work with some serious disappointment. Glad you were able to correct the resin issue. Very nice result in the end. What were the dimensions? Also it looked really heavy. If you mentioned it I musta missed it. 😊
Great video. One question for you. Do you always use table top epoxy to finish your charcuterie boards? I know this is opinion, but I thought the Rubio looked better and it was definitely the easier application.
I may be incorrect but I think it would have bee very cool to have each of those two pcs. of cherry split into sister/book ends and then made into a char board. it's GORGEOUS don't mistake me please, I just think one could have made more use of that much beautiful wood
Enjoyed watching you video! What was the final thickness of this board? You mentioned this one was extra thick in the video, what do you typically shoot for on a charcuterie board?
@ thank you for the response, I just started experimenting with the hybrid charcuterie board and was thinking I should sort for something a little thicker than what I was doing.
beautiful!!! also thankyou for showing a REAL resin wood project! and how it almost always goes! lol! im so happy you were able to fix the goofys! lol. ive been ploaying with the idea of incorperating moving water under resin in some of my wood projects and that goof with only the harder? being added brought back the memory of my idea lol thankyou for that too! lol i have ancient joshua tree wood! hard as a rock its so old! but adding a waterfall with a river of water under resin i think will pretty awesome!
That is a pretty cool idea. I hope it works out good.
Gorgeous! I love the purple and black mixed.
Thank you
Beautiful 😍.....but tbh my heart skipped a beat when you said you were gonna "throw it out", what a fantastic salvage!
😂😂😂😂 My heart sank when I realized what I did.

Awesome video.. love that you show the mistakes AND recovery
Thank you.
That turned out great in the end. Feel your pain when things go bad, but it is nice when you win at the end of the project. Great job Ken 👍👍👍👍👍.
Very true! Thanks

Nice job buddy I never knew about mixing the resin with acetone I’ll have to give that a try. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻
It is a great help. I learned it from Doug over at Pohl Barn years ago.
I love it! That floating camber is so cool! (No idea how to spell it, but the inverted ramp on the sides)

Great work. Love your videos, Ken. My sons (5 and 7) always ask for "Mr Moon" videos!
Btw, you mean acetone, not acetate, right?
Haha, don't judge my word mess up. I was lucky to even get this video out. 😂Tell your boys hey for me.
Really nice result, if not a smooth road getting there.
Just a thought about mis-calculated resin volumes: since the wood was already coated in resin, you could have used water to get the precise volume, no tape measure or calculator required.
Water is always tricky. I could have used rice or sand though.
This is fabulous!!! It looks exquisite (I'm picturing mine, right now!) but I'm wondering about my knives performance with the resin, over time?
As much as these cost, I'm not sure you want to do anything with knives on them. It's more of a serving platter and Display piece.
First: 10/10 for tenacity. I must admit, had that happened to me with the hardener, I would have given up at that point and reluctantly started again
Second: I wonder if you've stumbled upon a really interesting technique here to cast resin with pockets that could subsequently be filled with something else. I'm thinking lava lamp?

Thanks, it is Acetone
ethyl acetate?
@@Curly_Maple Not sure what's going on I did talk to text on the answer. It should have said Acetone.
Try sealing the wood with modge podge before putting on the top coat. It seals the wood so there are no bubbles
I sealed the wood with resin, just had some larger wholes and gaps that the resin fills into causing dimples.
What planet is that. I'd like to try and fish that river. Great job. 👍👍👍👍😎
Moontopia. 😂
You can use liquid latex on the backside edges to keep resin from building up
Is it acetate? Or acetone?
Acetone
it's funny, I was thinking you seemed so calm about the hardener mishap but then said you pounded on the wood to relieve your frustration. That make more sense for you!
Haha, I have been doing so good with my anger. The next project video up it plagued with issues and I just roll with them.
@@MoonpieCreations I never think you are over the top about it. It makes you who you are. I think rolling with it is better for our blood pressure! take care
stunning , is it purely for serving? might it scratch. its too good to touch.
It is just for serving. The resin hardens fairly well so as long as the new owner doesn't use a knife on it it should be okay.
looks great! Why no vac pot for the resin bubbles before you pour?
Really don't need to do it with the fathom and the table top it's just quicker and easier to use the torch.

I’d like to see something in black and red
Although not a cutting board, here is a pretty awesome looking red and black bowl. th-cam.com/video/gwYr_NuTaWM/w-d-xo.html
Great video. One question for you. Do you always use table top epoxy to finish your charcuterie boards? I know this is opinion, but I thought the Rubio looked better and it was definitely the easier application.
It really all depends on what the client wants. Most want that real shiny look. When they want a more matt look I use mineral oil and bee's wax.
Just curious, why would you not use Rubio on the top as well if the client doesn’t want the Tabe top epoxy?
@@dalemoser5824 The client left it up to me. If a client wants a matt finish I use Rubio.
I may be incorrect but I think it would have bee very cool to have each of those two pcs. of cherry split into sister/book ends and then made into a char board. it's GORGEOUS don't mistake me please, I just think one could have made more use of that much beautiful wood
I could have. Bu the customer asked for a thicker board. In the end it was only 1.5" thick.
Enjoyed watching you video! What was the final thickness of this board? You mentioned this one was extra thick in the video, what do you typically shoot for on a charcuterie board?
The resin ones usually come out at about 1" to 1.25". This one was 1.5". But it was also 18"x14". They are usually 16"x12".
@ thank you for the response, I just started experimenting with the hybrid charcuterie board and was thinking I should sort for something a little thicker than what I was doing.
@@brianboden2672 I make smaller boards too. About 5"x10" and 1/2" thick. Check my videos. I made some out of resin and coffee beans.
What did you seal the wood with before using the epoxy
I used a 50/50 mix of TotalBoat 2:1 and Acetone.
I was thinking that under the clear coat, the texture on the blue part might make it look like a river or something. Rapids etc
It really did.
