This is a great tutorial. I may be backward but I was always of the opinion that standing off hand shooting was the best way to learn and really hone your skills. I taught myself to shoot like that as a teenager both right and left handed and anytime I tried to rest the rifle I felt it interfered with the recoil. Shooting from standing is a true test of technique though. Like you said breathing is vitally important as is the right grip that suits you to manage the recoil and a nice smooth trigger pull. I always thought shooting off a bench was cheating 🤣
I feel pretty much the same. I started bench resting purely because so many you tubers say it shows the accuracy of a rifle they're demonstrating. Weirdly, I get better accuracy from certain rifles offhand than I do on a bench. Remington Express Compact is a good example.
@@PlanetDrewdog yeah totally agree. I’d hazard a guess you might be a better shot than most of these experts using their bench rests 😉 like you say it does give a better example of the rifles capabilities though. I’m sure some of these experts say they’re at 40 metres when really they’re only at about 20 to make the gun look better too 🤣
I let the skill slip from my youth to my now retired years. However, I've been practicing a few minutes every day. I started at 10 yards for a month. Then out to 20, 30 and larger reactive targets up to 50. Now I can give a tin can fits at 30 yards. Another good interesting and educational video.
I'll certainly give this a try. I've been tied to the bench for the past few years - although giving the shooting sticks a try recently. I know I can be very accurate with a springer out to 50m from the bench, however the Sticks have been a challenge....Keep up the great work - you are a breath of fresh air.....
I agree with you Drew, once a rifle is proven to be accurate it's time to work on ourselves away from the bench. I typically shoot from kneeling position or completely offhand....point and squeeze the trigger. Too I've found using lower magnification helps. Cheers my friend 🍻👍P.S thanks for the shout-out 😉
Thanks for great advice, all my mate bench rest at the range which is great for setting up your sights but I alway prefer to stand I've only been taking air gun shooting seriously since February 2022. I go up the range once a week and almost shoot every day in my garden. I'm gonna have a crack at the sit down on a stool now I've seen you explain it. Thanks Keep them coming 😎✌️
I was thinking the same as you, well done for spelling it out, and the idea of starting with each harder shooting position at a closer range and gradually extending. Great stuff, liked and subscribed
I haven’t got my air rifle yet I’m going to the BSA shop in Birmingham. I used to use a sling for standing kneeling and brown or leaning on a tree never zeroed my rifle on a bench. I told my two grandsons they shouldn’t shoot at 🐀 rats or woodes until they could hit 10 beer bottle tops on the trot. I will be happy at 50 yards before I go hunting. I think you’re right lm sure we’ll all be going off grid soon. Thanks and stay safe pilgrim.
I'm now a frail 77 yr old, and I can no longer hold a heavy rifle offhand, so I have to sit at the bench to continue my passion. With my guitar playing it's the only thing that keeps me going, but I understand what you are saying.
I understand John, and the day is coming when I will be very grateful to have a bench to shoot from too. Agreed, the guitar is so good for the soul my friend. Power to you, Drew
Hello Sir, Thank you very much for your caring, informative, inspiring, instructional video. I'm just getting into airgunning in the last few years after wanting to do it all my life. I'm a twin to another boy. Needless to say, airguns were forbidden. That rule carried regrettably until our much loved father passed in 2017. I didn't race out to buy one. It just slowly unravelled. Seeing your film makes me feel guilty, as though I've subconsciously taken the easy way out with using a bench. I use a bench to sight in an air rifle as this is the most accurate I can be. When hunting, I use a trigger stick. I find them great and so help my accuracy. If I had begun airgunning when I wanted to, in my teens, I think I would have realised the importance of standing and shooting unaided and would have been something I'd have practiced a lot. I think you've been the kick up my backside I needed and will now pay much more attention to how I aim and practice. I do find it difficult holding steady when standing up. I've considered doing some dumb bell work for this, for my arms and shoulders. However, I think the best thing to do is keep practising and work hard to be better. I did notice your low fishing stool, Sir. Your stool being low means your knees come up, giving you a great elbow rest. When I'm out in the field without my trigger stick, I would go down on one knee and use the other as an elbow support similar to how you do. Thank you Sir. You've really made me think and consider what I'm going to do and how I'd like to become a better, more accurate shooter. Best wishes, Ian.
My thoughts here, regarding off hand shooting practice. Go & shoot clays with a under & over. Not some of these pansy auto shot guns. When you have the hand eye coordination through that, pick up an air rifle is easy work. I actually prefer shooting with a springer in the field. It doesn't make such a mess & is a bit more stealthy! Loving your channel fella, nice to see someone on here who is on the level Keep them coming 👍
I've always sat elbows to knees makes your triangles for support, next "go to" is kneeling unless the ground is bad/wet. if there's a convenient tree I'll stand and use it, only free shoot standing if its the only option. just common sense to me +50 years now. no real recoil with an airgun but I grip the same, pulling a couple lbs both hands into my shoulder as if there were some, for it to be a solid extension of myself. at a bench I'll use my elbows, good enough! its not a dislike for a rest or is it, just never felt the need for one.
Nice bit of shooting! I like to shoot my bsa lightning xl tactical "free-hand" occasionally, just to remind myself what it's like. I'm a reasonable shot using this break barrel out to about 25 yards.
Benchrest is fun to test pellets and accuracy of any rifle or just push thr range a bit... But it is not really representative of any real life hunting /field target situations! Interesting tips... I believe ive never ever shot while sitting but unsupported 🤔 Shooting off hand sure is an other pair of gloves!

I'm always elbows to knees or kneel unless there's a branch I can pin to. its different plinking with the BB guns and pistols where I prefer free standing point-n-shoot 10-13 yards.
Hey Jace, well I haven't seen one but I'll bet there's a long barrel PS out there somewhere. For me, I feel comfortable with the carbine - beautifully balanced for such a heavy (ish) rifle.

Thanks Damion, it seems to work for me. Starting at close range is the secret to not getting disheartened I find.
Thanks for the support my friend.

Good to hear, and yes - starting close is the way to go. Starting at 30yds + can lead to becoming disheartened I think.
I only shoot off hand. There's no bench rest when out walking in the woods or field when hunting, so I want to stay on point off hand.

Great video and really practical and valuable tips. Your process you described to wane off the bench shooting is simple yet sure to give results
